This was my lens for about 10 years and I loved it. (I gaveto my wife and continue to marvel at it.) It is light, compact, fast, sharp, and inexpensive. My use was and is as a wide-angle zoom. I rarely shoot muchbeyond 35mm, so I can't speak to that end of the zoom range. But as a wide-angle lens, it served me exceptionally well. The bulk of my best shots were taken with this lens. (Forwhich I recently was asked by a photographer, Do you shootwith a Leica? Your photos are Leica-esque. No, I shootwith mid-range Canon cameras and a $300 lens!)My only complaint with this lens, as with all Canon zoomlenses, is the horrible little manual focus ring. Granted, the auto-focusing servo-motor is lighting fast and ultraquiet (another plus), but I'm old school and love havingconstant manual-focus control. If that isn't an issue foryou, consider this lens perfect. (The zoom ring, by theway, is excellent.) So all of my four stars reflect thathorrible little manual focus ring. Otherwise, count thislens as a full five-star wonder.

I purchased this lens for the Canon Rebel XTi. But what I was told afterwords was that this lens was best for film cameras. The pictures still came out clearer and brighter then my standard 18-55mm. But I took this back because it was not what I expected.

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens:
This has long been one of the sharpest and most affordable standard zooms in Canon's line-up.
Yet despite it's great reputation and high quality (all it lacks is IS) it seems that Canon has decided to drop it from their line-up.
How very sad!

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens:
I must say, this lens is great range and exceptional i age quality from about f5.6 to f8. For a general walk around holiday lens, you cannot go past this , especially with its price range. Centre sharpness is very good at f3.5 and gets better as the lens is stopped down. At about f6.7 to f8 the whole frame is sharp and pleasing.
The body could be made a little tougher for pro use, but then again you aren't buying a pro lens here. The USM is second to none, even in low light applications, fast consistent and "deadly silent".

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens:
I was looking for a lightweight, versatile zoom lens for my 50D that could be used for hiking, wide angle landscape shots, as well as indoor flash scenes. This lens fit the bill beautifully- it is sharp, with a sweet spot in the f7.1 to f8 range, and has a very fast and quiet USM focus. I had the chance to compared it to the 17-55mm IS lens at around 22mm focal length, and my 24-85mm was much sharper. For outdoor use the f3.4 to 4.5 aperture is simply not an issue, and for indoor use with a flash it is likewise irrelevant, at least for my needs. I honestly can't justify buying the 24-70mm L series lens, which is much heavier and three times the price (and possibly not as sharp, depending on the copy that you get), when compared to the great performance of this little gem. The only thing to note about this lens is the barrel distortion at the 24mm end, which is typical of most wide angle zooms, and easily dealt with in post processing using a plug in like PTLens. The other thing to note is that the 24mm end, although considered "wide," isn't always quite wide enough on a 1.6x crop sensor. But for most purposes it works out just fine, and I'm very happy with this purchase.

Not a bad lens at all, use for general photos, even used at a few weddings.

Used this lens consistantly with film 35mm, not satisfied with results on 1.6 factor DSLR, now back to using it with full frame DSLR. Lens speed acceptable for general snapshot photography. Compact lightweight appreciated in this day and age. Definitely not an L lens.

Was working a job and dropped my camera. The lens took the brunt of the drop and had to sent in to be repaired but....I immediately ordered another. It is a great lens..fast accurate and very versitile. Am shooting the art collection of a hospital and can crop with the lens which helps much on the printing of the photos.

Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens:
Bought this lens to replace the cheap 28-90 that came with my Elan 7e. I chose this over the 28-105IS because that extra 4mm on the wide end makes a HUGE difference when it comes to the x1.6 factor of my 10D.
Comments about Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens:
Recently I have purchased the Canon 24mm f/2.8 lens. It is a very good lens, visibly outperformed Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 at f/5.6 both at the center and the borders of the image (the lens was tested with Canon Rebel XT digital camera, 1.6x crop factor of the chip that equals ca. 38mm focal). However, to my surprise, in comparison to Canon 24mm F/2.8 lens, the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens revealed much better resolution at 24mm at f/3.5 and f/4.0 at the borders of the image. Thus, the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens could be considered as quite good and more versatile optics than Canon 24mm f/2.8 lens. Therefore, for those people who are looking for a good performance of a single lens at 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm, Canon 24-85mm lens is a very reasonable compromise. I am just too picky to own both Canon and old Sigma 24mm f/2.8, Canon 20mm and 35mm f/2.0 and old Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro.
Expertise: Since 1998
Problems Encountered: Quite disappointing on the 1x chip or 24x36mm film camera at the borders

I bought one at one year last and I'm very happy with the image quality in my digital 20 D.It's a sharp, fast and quiet lens, and the print on the paper is like a film work.My job is wedding photos and I generally work with f/ 5.6 - f/11 with 2 flashes and the results are excellent. The price is not so expensive by the quality.
Problems Encountered: None.
