In the sunny, sometimes windy and dusty environment here a Haze UV filter should be a necessity for anyone with an expensive camera. My son is pleased there is such a nice UV filter available for the G9. He does wish, however, that there was a cover or cap avilable for the back of the adapter to prevent dirt and moisture from collecting on the inside of the filter when the unit has to be removed from the camera.

I bought this filter to protect my glass.
I have a problem with reflection off of the back of the filter causing ghosting. I have this problem when there is a strong light in the frame of the shot. From what I've gathered, and from what I've seen, this ghosting occurs when light is reflected forward off the digital sensor. The light then is reflected back to the sensor off the back of the filter. This gives a ghost of the strong light source that is upside-down and backward from the source itself. If you're shooting film it shouldn't be a problem, (since there's no reflective sensor, just film) but it has caused distortion with my digital Canon 30D. Some shots were interesting, but some were ruined.
I use a Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM on my 30D and the setup works fantastic without the filter: no ghosting what-so-ever!
NOTE: A friend tried this same lens with this filter on his Canon 40D and reports no ghosting. I think the 40D sensor must be improved and less reflective. (?)
The ghosting is more pronounced in the photo than in the viewfinder since the mirror (to the viewfinder) moves out of the way when the shot is taken and the reflection off of the sensor is unobstructed. That being said, I have been able to see the ghosting in my viewfinder in some cases.
Also, I get the same problem with a Canon 72mm UV filter on my zoom lens (Canon 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS) but it's less pronounced. I only noticed it after trying to re-create the problem. Again, the ghosting was entirely eliminated by removing the UV filter
In the end I would recommend getting a lens hood for protection rather than this filter, especially if using a 30D with a prime lens.

It's better than damaging the lens, but my images are not as crisp as they are without it. Will be using it outdoors on the beach, but won't leave it on all the time.

This filter worked just as I expected it to and was easy to install. I used it while on a trip to El Paso and New Mexico to take photos on some fairly hazy days and was very happy with the results. The price is really great and I look forward to testing it more.

UV filter is a necessity for lens protection and this will definitely do the job. I don't have any complaint so far. It's clear and I don't think it is interfering with quality of the picture.

Comments about Canon 58mm Haze UV-1 Glass Filter:
The effects aren't as drastic as the image above portrays, but get these to protect your lenses. I tried using a polar filter over this and it creates too many light reflections between both filters and the lense. Any anti-haze effects like this can be done in photoshop very easily.

Comments about Canon 58mm Haze UV-1 Glass Filter:
I am a wedding and portrait photographer. Having a filter like this is so important as it protects my lenses. A small investment for the service it provides! The only trouble I have is that it unscrews off at times. I have filters on 4 other lenses and never have troubles with those ones, so it must have to do with the size of the lens. Still I would rather get in the habit of checking that it is secure than to go without.

This Canon filter is a decent quality filter. It does not stand up to B&W, Rilex or other premium, but works fine and for the price [$] can save a lot of money in your front element.
