I have owned this mic for 7 or 8 years, and have used it many times in various applications. Overall, the sound quality is good and the 90° and mid-side options are useful. Of course it doesn't match the sound quality of a professional condenser mic, but for the money it is a fairly good value.

I recently compared The SONY mic to the built-in stereo mics on my Panasonic GH2 camera, and the SONY mic sounds better (better signal to noise ratio, flatter frequency response, improved low frequencies, and the ability to position/focus the mic's position allows for better isolation of room noise). The 90° and mid-side options give you two options for stereo recording. The mid-side captures a wider stereo field and can be more natural sounding, albeit less focused and more prone to room noise/reverberation.

The battery consumption is minimal, and the power light will flash red when you turn it on to indicate battery life is good. Just be aware that the power light does not stay on when the mic is on. Thus, you could easily leave it on and drain the battery.

My only gripe with this item it the mic "stand" that comes with it will not attach to a conventional microphone stand, and its narrow base makes it prone to tipping over. I am a musician, and the SONY's mic stand hole diameter is nearly 3/4" with very coarse threads. Conventional mic stands use 5/8" diameter with a much finer thread. So, if I want to attach the ECM-MS907 to a conventional mic stand, I need to find an adapter of some sort. I have used generic microphone clips in lieu of the ECM-MS907's mic stand, but I'd like to find an adapter. As SONY also makes pro-audio gear, why they used this non-standard hole and thread configuration is baffling.

BTW, the GH2 uses a non-standard 3/32" input jack, thus requiring an adapter for the SONY's 1/8" plug. C'mon, people, please stick with standards!!!

The permanently attached cable is very thin and doesn't inspire confidence, BUT it hasn't failed me, yet. When it does, I hope I can dismantle the mic and repair it.

All in all, its a good mic. There are so many condenser mics that have come onto the market since this was introduced, I would strongly consider looking at other options. However, if you can find one of these used, for cheap ($20-$30 or so), I'd say it would be a good alternative to your camera's built-in mics, or as a cheap backup mic.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

Very happy with the ECM-MS907 stereo mic by Sony. I use it with my Sony sound recorder and with my laptop to record speeches, and other sound recordings. Compared to the built-in mic, I found the output a bit lower in volume but the background noise level was DRAMATICALLY lower, which added to the clarity of the quality of recordings (with or without the wind-attenuating cover). The stand was pretty decent, although, I hope it would last longer than another SONY stand that came with a mono mic earlier. The clamp broke on that earlier one rendering it unusable. The stereo mic has three settings:off (to save battery-life), 90 and 120 degree coverage. The latter setting gave a better stereo image. The sound was more "open". With this mic added, my sony recorder has become more useful and capable of good recordings and has a new lease on its life. Highly recommended!!

It's small and light. Works on both Canon HV40 and Pentax K-7 that I own. When I turn it on, a red light flickers and then no light is displayed. Not sure if there should be a light indicator that it's on, but it still works.
Sound is not as loud as from HV40 camcorder default microphones, but clean.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

Buy this mic if you own a Canon HV20, HV30, or HV40. Those cameras have loud tape motors that will ruin your audio recording. I have tried the Rode videomic pro mounted on the camera. It reduced the noise but not nearly enough. This Sony mic crushes the camera noise. You must separate the mic from the camera. A professional mic and a beachtek adaptor will sound better but this little mic is quick and more than adequate. The battery lasts forever.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

I picked this mic up as an experiment to use an external mic for my iphone (using a connector found at KV connections). While the iphone built in mic is decent for voice, it does fair with live audio.

I used the set up to record a few test concerts and was somewhat pleased with the results. My main complaint was more with the iphone than the Sony mic - even though this is a stereo mic, and the connector sends a stereo signal, the iphone ONLY records in mono.

The Sony mic did a decent job, but I would have liked to have heard more bass response. For the second field test, I changed my position in the room where the music was being performed. At first I was facing toward the drummer. I picked up slightly more bass, but also clipping when the sound was too loud for the equipment I was using.

I've decided to switch over to the Handy H1 Zoom because of the great reviews and the recorder will do specifically what I want. I'll keep the Sony mic for interviews and acoustic performances with the iphone set up.

I have been involved with aural histories lately and was not satisfied with the quality of sound I was getting from the built-in microphone on my SONY camera. Hopefully the ECM-MS907 will solve that problem. I gave it a trial test and it seemed fine to me. Can't wait to use it during my next interview.

I like its size and ability to stand on a surface by itself or being able to attach to a microphone stand.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

I use a Kodak Zi8 to bootleg live concerts, to record silly videos for YouTube, and record little demos when I play acoustic guitar. The mic does drop the volume a little more than I was hoping. I increased the sensitivity on my Zi8, but that didn't seem to help much. I was really hoping that this would be a good room mic for loud concerts. In fact because I had already read that it reduced the volume, I thought it would be perfect. I was only partially right. It doesn't seem to peak out with high volume and it , but who wants to listen to a somewhat muted song?! I actually had better results with the onboard mic for recording concerts. When I record anything that takes place in a room (say a group of friends hanging out), I also have better results with the onboard. Where this mic is great is when its close mic'd (less than 4-5' away). I'll be posting some test videos soon. When I finished, I'll post them at: youtube.[@]

For the price, it's awesome. Is it the perfect mic? No. But if you do some research, you'll find comparisons to others, and this one's fine. I tried it myself, compared it to the onboard mic (a different world in comparison!) and a budget condenser through a mixer, all into my Optura 30 camcorder. It works very well. And I video taped a band at a local venue. The sound from this mic is fine for the price.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

I bought this Microphone because I needed a way to improve the audio recording of my daughters piano recitals. The Built in microphone of the Canon camcorder was not good enought to capture the performance and I tried a canon camcorder mounted microphone to improve the audio but it did little and I returned it.

This Microphone is remotable and I should be able to place it closer to the performance while recording at a distance. IT also has a selectable "angle of view" capability.

I tried in in my home and it works well but I have yet to try it at a performance. I will update this review when I do.

I bought this mic so I can record the presentations at WPPI, and did this little wonder ever deliver. In some cases I was far away from the speakers, and it was still able to pick up the sound. I really like the ability to zoom the mic as well. The battery life is amazing, 1 AA and I was able to record 10 presentations at around 2hrs. each, so about 20 hrs. of audio and it still has plenty of juice left. I highly recommend this mic.

This little mic sounds great! The size and quality are perfect for recordings in the field and for professional interviews. I use it with a mini-disc recorder and have achieved great results. The clarity is comparable to its $200 cousin, the ECM-MS957. recommended.

Sharp looking mic with a very handy foldable stand. Decent sound quality. A bit pricey but not outrageous.

A good camcorder mic - assuming you can find a camcorder with a mic jack.

Comments about Sony ECM-MS907 - Stereo Mic:

I'm using this microphone to produce high school news broadcasts. It's a GREAT microphone to get voices and sounds crystal clear while also drowning out a lot of VERY loud sounds around the person who is speaking.

I have used it in many situations in which I thought for sure those using the mic wouldn't be heard clearly because there was so much commotion going on, and I was amazed at how clear, articulate, and loud the speaking was.

Great microphone for a great price.
