The superior-quality Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens features a brilliant maximum aperture of f/1.4, the largest in its class, along with the superior natural image quality of Canon L-series lenses. An advanced floating mechanism and a ground and polished aspherical lens element achieve extremely sharp, distortion free pictures from infinity to its closest shooting distance of 1.0'/0.3 m. With ring USM-powered rear focus, autofocus is stealthy and swift. A wide focusing ring provides comfortable manual focus, and the filter ring remains stationary for ease of use with polarizers and other special effects filters.

Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
This is my favorite prime! The 35mm f/1.4L is almost always on a camera body for weddings. It's fast, sharp, great color, and has a certain "je ne sais quois".

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I find that I am most creative with fast aperture primes and this lens is no exception. Mounted on a crop factor body like my 40D, it is the perfect walk-around focal length. It balances well and feels solidly made. I certainly wouldn't want to drop it, but I have no doubt that it could take small bumps and knocks and retain its fantastic image quality.
On my camera, sharpness at f1.4 is good and by f2.0 it is great. f5.6 is razor sharp and there is no difference stopping down any further.
The close focusing distance is incredibly useful and while not macro, it adds more versatility to an already versatile lens.
The adage "you get what you pay for" has never been truer. This is a fantastic lens.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
This is turning out to be a nice, all-around lens. It is very fast, and reasonably sharp (sharper than the L zooms I've used, like the 24-70 and 24-105, not quite as sharp as my 85mm F1.2L). The focal length has been great on both a 1.3x 1D body as well as my 1.6x 50D. I've used this lens for general sight-seeing photography - a very versatile focal length.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
After purchasing the Canon 85mm f1.2 prime, I decided that I HAD to make the switch to primes lenses – the difference in quality is like night and day. After renting this lens a couple times, I decided to sell my 24-70 f2.8 zoom lens, and bought this instead. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. This is my go-to lens for dancing shots, party shots, and environmental work. Its focus is fast, tack-sharp and dead on. The bokeh is also gorgeous. It also has that solid Canon L-Series construction and survived a major fall that my ankle, alas, did not. I did notice a slight chromatic aberration on a recent engagement session, but it's not noticeable unless viewed at about 300%. At f1.4 it's awesome for low light work, and focuses much faster than the 85 even in very dark rooms. Between this, the 85, and the 135 primes, I'll never own another zoom lens. Absolutely love this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
Bought this lens for indoor use, and it has not disappointed. Its 2 stop advantage over the fastest zooms made it ideal for low light photography where flash is not desired. Sharpness and resolution are both good. This lens is used primarily on a crop body, and its AF is much better than the 50mm f/1.4.
The only thing that I would like see improved is faster AF to track moving objects (i.e. kids) better. It's not necessarily slower than other primes, but it is much slower than the 70-200 lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I mainly shoot indoor. I find my 50mm length feels a bit too long and 24mm feels too wide. It truly is the best overall length.
You will not go wrong going with this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
This is an extremely well-built lens, first and foremost, as most L lenses are. I use this predominantly on the 5D Mark II and it just gives you that "look" - it's just wide enough to give you a different perspective, but not too wide (like the 24mm) that it distorts the subject. It focuses slower than some of my other L lens experiences, but it's very consistent, even with the 5D's focus capabilities. The mechanics of the focus ring are very smooth and very accurate - it takes a surprising amount of turning to go from infinity to MFD.
The bright aperture can really help in low light to boost shutter speeds, and also to provide a unique shallow depth of field at wide angle. I've definitely fallen in love with this lens.
My only issues with this lens are the Chromatic Aberrations that are apparent in high-contrast areas up until about f/4. As a wedding photographer, black tuxedos and white shirts could be issues if they are out of focus, but stopping down definitely reduces the effect. Vigenetting is noticeable but I add a moderate vignette to most of my photos in post anyway, so this lens almost removes that step from my workflow. Bokeh can be a bit "nervous" in the corners, and while some people may like that, I'd prefer it to be smooth. Not a huge point with a wide-angle lens anyway, but just something I notice compared to the 16-35mm f/2.8L II.
If you use it on a crop factor, you'll get a roughly normal field of view similar to a 50mm on a full-frame, so if you like the wide-angle look and you shoot a 7D/60D/etc then you may want to look at the 24mm. I find 35mm to be a "boring" focal length on crop, but your mileage may vary :) You can't really go wrong with this lens as long as you can accept the minor imperfections with high-contrast scenes.

Excellent lightweight lens that makes a great walk around lens for professional work or just a nice stroll on the beach or in the woods. Although I do not use as a portrait lens it is more than capable.
If you are a pro this is a must lens. If you are an enthusiast I would also consider the 16-35mk2.
For what it is worth having used both I prefer the Canon 35 F1.4 over the Zeiss 35 ZE F/2.0.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
This is on my 5DM2 90% of the time! Doesn't weigh like a brick, and provided that you have the space to 'zoom' by mobilizing, you can cover most of the range in the std telephoto range. Let's not forget the f/1.4 providing an exceptionally thin DoF & pleasing bokeh (esp. when mated to a Full Frame sensor) and entitling you to leave the flash at home. Autofocus is fast & quiet and photos are tack sharp just as professional reviewers have stated. Rumors that this lens might be up for an update but I'm left wondering what Canon engineers could do. Small gripes is that the supplied hood is not very easy to attach and often times gets misalign/misthreaded and binds up compared to other hoods and that it takes 72mm filters.
What are you waiting for? Buy it and enjoy it now!!!

But very few epic lenses. The Canon 35L is one of those epic lenses. Fast, silent, and accurate focus, with resolution and contrast to die for. Wide open a f/1.4 center sharpness is fantastic, and a few stops down it's unbelievable. The canon L series lenses are a good deal pricier than there standard EF brethren, but construction, performance, and opticalquality more than warrant the price. I love this lens! Most highly recomended.

A fast, accurate-focusing, dependable lens compared to 50 1.2L. Decent color and sharpness. Much more consistent and versatile too. But if you want more picturesque bokeh, 50 1.2L is still the way to go.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I purchased this lens because I really prefer primes to zooms and needed something on the wide end. Using this on a 5Dii, it's just wide enough for a wide normal lens that doesn't distort. I was leaning toward the 24L before purchasing this, because I thought this would fill the same use as my 50L, but that's not the case. This lens works as a great wide for weddings and interior shots where you need to get a wider view but don't want any distortion. It's definitely a winner.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:
I have had my share of L lenses, and I have to say this is the best L Ive purchased. I recently sold my 24-70L (although a great and sharp lens, I was having a problem with to much camera shake as I have MS and carrying it around all day proved to be daunting for me) to purchase a 50L 1.2, I had been using the 50 1.4, but wanted to upgrade as I thought the sharpness would be better on the 1.2 over the 1.4 and that the weight would be less than the 24-70L to help me with the camera shake issue...and boy was I wrong...I must have gotten a lemon as it would not focus but 2 out of 10 shots on both my 5d mark II or my T2i, and then when it did focus those 2 times, the photos were so soft they were unusable even at F4! (I even used the micro adjustment on the mark and could not get it anywhere close) I was not about to spend that kind of money on an unusable lens, so I returned it to BH and without question they refunded my money, so I decided to give the 35 a try since I needed a prime for low light weddings. I also purchased the sigma 17-50 2.8 to use on my T2i to go along with this 35L. I shot a wedding this weekend with the pair, and I can definitely say that I am extremely pleased with how both preformed! Sharp through out! Sharpest lenses I have owned! Also, I got very consistent results as well along with fast and accurate focusing... The only con on the 35 is that I am having a problem getting the lens hood to go on smoothly, but hey, to get a lens this sharp with no focusing issues I am 150% happy! I can easily see this lens staying on my Mark 100% of the time...I won't go back to either 50mm lenses...I can just stick this 35L on my T2i (same image sensor as the 7d) and have close to a 50 equivalent....So for me...the 35 is a must now! Where as I have sold other L's as they were just not for me, I finally found one that is!

Super Fast Focus on my 7D. Bright even at lower ISOs. Sharp isn't a strong enough word for the wonderful pictures this lens takes. B&H are wonderful as well. Faster Delivery than Estimated and they discounted the freight because they could ship it faster and cheaper. Couldn't ask for more!
