The superior-quality Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens features a brilliant maximum aperture of f/1.4, the largest in its class, along with the superior natural image quality of Canon L-series lenses. An advanced floating mechanism and a ground and polished aspherical lens element achieve extremely sharp, distortion free pictures from infinity to its closest shooting distance of 1.0'/0.3 m. With ring USM-powered rear focus, autofocus is stealthy and swift. A wide focusing ring provides comfortable manual focus, and the filter ring remains stationary for ease of use with polarizers and other special effects filters.

Use it and abuse of it! It does work at 1.4 and that's a long way from 4.0. Both aren't perfect at the largest aperture (I'm comparing a 24-105 4L with the 35 1.4L), but since buying the 35 I stopped using the zoom. What is great? Fast.
I bought it Halloween afternoon so I could use it at night and it was just wonderful. It always was my first choice of lens, but I could not convince my wife that although it is NOT a zoom it does deliver "nice" pics. She didn't note the difference of the lenses but DID acknowledge the improvement of the pictures...
IF you, amateur as I am, think you might need the large aperture for kids inside, go for it. For a closer comparison I used for a long time a Sigma 50mm 2.8f macro EX. But the 35mm gives me more keepers.
It took me 4 years to buy the lens and now I realize that I should have done it before (before upgrading twice the body and buying the L zoom). Much better had I kept my EOS 300D (the lowest Rebel at that time)with this lens instead of using the 5D MarkII with the lenses I had...

This is a very good wide angle prime lens from Canon. The focal length is commonly one that can be a walk around lens. It is well balanced and easy to hold during shooting. The lens is not overwhelmingly sharp at the wide apertures but good bokeh. The corners are not so great at these apertures. THe sharpness improves at f2.8 and by f4 very sharp and decent corners on a full frame sensor. The lens does suffer from a bit more CA than i had hoped. Overall stopped down it is an outstanding landscape lens. At the wide apertures, good for portraits.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

Excellent lightweight lens that makes a great walk around lens for professional work or just a nice stroll on the beach or in the woods. Although I do not use as a portrait lens it is more than capable.

If you are a pro this is a must lens. If you are an enthusiast I would also consider the 16-35mk2.

For what it is worth having used both I prefer the Canon 35 F1.4 over the Zeiss 35 ZE F/2.0.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

This is on my 5DM2 90% of the time! Doesn't weigh like a brick, and provided that you have the space to 'zoom' by mobilizing, you can cover most of the range in the std telephoto range. Let's not forget the f/1.4 providing an exceptionally thin DoF & pleasing bokeh (esp. when mated to a Full Frame sensor) and entitling you to leave the flash at home. Autofocus is fast & quiet and photos are tack sharp just as professional reviewers have stated. Rumors that this lens might be up for an update but I'm left wondering what Canon engineers could do. Small gripes is that the supplied hood is not very easy to attach and often times gets misalign/misthreaded and binds up compared to other hoods and that it takes 72mm filters.
What are you waiting for? Buy it and enjoy it now!!!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

But very few epic lenses. The Canon 35L is one of those epic lenses. Fast, silent, and accurate focus, with resolution and contrast to die for. Wide open a f/1.4 center sharpness is fantastic, and a few stops down it's unbelievable. The canon L series lenses are a good deal pricier than there standard EF brethren, but construction, performance, and opticalquality more than warrant the price. I love this lens! Most highly recomended.

A fast, accurate-focusing, dependable lens compared to 50 1.2L. Decent color and sharpness. Much more consistent and versatile too. But if you want more picturesque bokeh, 50 1.2L is still the way to go.

I purchased this lens because I really prefer primes to zooms and needed something on the wide end. Using this on a 5Dii, it's just wide enough for a wide normal lens that doesn't distort. I was leaning toward the 24L before purchasing this, because I thought this would fill the same use as my 50L, but that's not the case. This lens works as a great wide for weddings and interior shots where you need to get a wider view but don't want any distortion. It's definitely a winner.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

I have had my share of L lenses, and I have to say this is the best L Ive purchased. I recently sold my 24-70L (although a great and sharp lens, I was having a problem with to much camera shake as I have MS and carrying it around all day proved to be daunting for me) to purchase a 50L 1.2, I had been using the 50 1.4, but wanted to upgrade as I thought the sharpness would be better on the 1.2 over the 1.4 and that the weight would be less than the 24-70L to help me with the camera shake issue...and boy was I wrong...I must have gotten a lemon as it would not focus but 2 out of 10 shots on both my 5d mark II or my T2i, and then when it did focus those 2 times, the photos were so soft they were unusable even at F4! (I even used the micro adjustment on the mark and could not get it anywhere close) I was not about to spend that kind of money on an unusable lens, so I returned it to BH and without question they refunded my money, so I decided to give the 35 a try since I needed a prime for low light weddings. I also purchased the sigma 17-50 2.8 to use on my T2i to go along with this 35L. I shot a wedding this weekend with the pair, and I can definitely say that I am extremely pleased with how both preformed! Sharp through out! Sharpest lenses I have owned! Also, I got very consistent results as well along with fast and accurate focusing... The only con on the 35 is that I am having a problem getting the lens hood to go on smoothly, but hey, to get a lens this sharp with no focusing issues I am 150% happy! I can easily see this lens staying on my Mark 100% of the time...I won't go back to either 50mm lenses...I can just stick this 35L on my T2i (same image sensor as the 7d) and have close to a 50 equivalent....So for me...the 35 is a must now! Where as I have sold other L's as they were just not for me, I finally found one that is!

Super Fast Focus on my 7D. Bright even at lower ISOs. Sharp isn't a strong enough word for the wonderful pictures this lens takes. B&H are wonderful as well. Faster Delivery than Estimated and they discounted the freight because they could ship it faster and cheaper. Couldn't ask for more!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

I had always thought lens is just a lens... boy, am I wrong!

I was happy with my 50mm/1.8, the cheapest lens in the Canon family. I thought I'd give this 35mm/1.4 a try after some pressure from my close friend.

I can see the quality as clear as day and night. People are commenting on the pictures I'm taking.

I'm never going to say lens is just a lens ever again.

                        Highly recommended!

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

I have really enjoyed the 35 1.4L from Canon so far. In comparison to the Nikon 35 1.4g, the af system on the Canon version is noticeably faster AND a few hundred dollars cheaper.

It was a tough decision to buy the 35 f/1.4 instead of the 24 f/1.4 until I finally received the prime and played with it. My eyes opened and I realized that I tend to view certain scenarios through a 35mm focal length versus a 24mm or 50mm. It is a perfect focal length for me. Also, as many others have mentioned, the 35 f/1.4 does have a certain look to it because of the huge aperture. It gives you that nice 3D pop to it along with some very vivid and contrasty colors. For anyone in doubt as to whether they should buy the 35 or 24, I would try using the 24-70 set at those focal lengths and see how you like it. Another thing you could try is to overlook your photos and see if you tend to lean towards the 24mm or 35mm focal length. You will not be disappointed with either prime lens!

For the pixel-peepers, there is chroma aberration when used wide open but it is only noticeable at 100% crop. I find the CA to be much more controlled than the Nikon version. As far as sharpness goes, it is super sharp from f/2 and up. At f/1.4 it is still sharp but just not AS sharp. For the price, the lens is definitely worth it if you need auto AF. If you do not need the auto AF AND money is not an issue, I would look into the Zeiss 35 f/1.4 Distagon instead. Otherwise, this prime lens and the 135 f/2 are my favorite Canon primes out there! Pair this 35 1.4L with the 135 f/2 L and you have an amazing street/portrait setup.

*Note* - I have not tested the AF on a sports body, however, it works great on my 5d mark ii.

I normally use it for portrait and passport photo with my 5D II.
It is a great lens, fast, sharp, specially great for indoor and low light. Aperture select between f2-f11 is the best choice.
The only thing I do not like is a bit heavy.
I highly recommend to any body who specially like
                          portrait photography.

Comments about Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide-Angle Autofocus Lens:

This lens was a Christmas prsent to myself. I've had it for a little over a week now & I LOVE this lens! It is my second L lens (my other L is the 70-200 II)& it definately is worthy of its L badge! At f/1.4 it is a little soft (I shoot with a 7D), but even wide open the images are certainly usable. At f/2.0 things get REALLY sharp! This is a great focal length for a crop body camera. You won't be disapointed!!
