The ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control, plugs into Canon's DV camcorders via the Control L (LANC) terminal, and gives you wired remote control of such functions as record start/stop, zoom and focus. Ideal for using while the camcorder is mounted on a tripod.

I bought the ZR-1000 because Canon uses a non-standard LANC instruction set on the XL2 camcorder, and most other after-market LANC controllers don't work fully. Good points are the most commonly-used buttons (zoom rocker and record) are right under your thumb. The preset zoom speed settings range from medium speed to glacier-slow, perfect for that slow crawl up on a subject for dramatic effect. The variable speed setting controlled by the rocker is touchy and hard to find and keep a steady zoom. It's good for crash zooms and moving quickly to frame a subject, but it too jerky for production use.
Minor issues: the straight cable is about four inches too short. The stock mounting clamp is designed for small, consumer-grade tripods, and wouldn't fit the larger handle on a pro tripod like a Manfrotto 503 head. Fortunately, it was a simple matter to fab a new clamp out of .020" aluminum strip and a small metal plate that fit the mounting holes perfectly.
The remaining function buttons are a tad too small and provide no tactile feel when pressed, but they work perfectly once you get your thumb on top of them. This is a minor drawback because with the exception of the Standby button, you really don't use them that much. The only function that doesn't work with the XL2 is the On Screen button, for toggling the data display on and off. Everything else works well, and keeps my hand on the tripod handle and not groping around the camera for the correct control.

Works well; but not fixable
Purchased two units for educational work on two camcorders; both units went bad (with careful handling) after 18 months and Canon refuses to fix; which makes these units disposable. Sorry, Canon......Read complete review

A bit pricey but very usefull as it's important not to touch the camcorder when zooming

Does what we need, everything on the camera can be worked from the control handle. We are very satisfied with the ZR-1000 Zoom.

Especially useful when shooting video at a distance where auto focus just will not do.

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
I use a Canon GL2 to broadcast our church services on our website. We were making our camera operator position more ergonomic and the zoom remote control fit very well with our plans. The zoom control makes the broadcast much smoother than using the toggle on the camera itself. My two complaints would be 1) Price - a little expensive for the functionality 2) Short Cable - we had to buy the extension cable to bring the zoom control down about 2.5 feet from the camera. Not sure what the point of purchasing this controller is when it only has a few inches of cable.

this remote is just what the doctor ordered... ive been self filming my recent deer hunts and just found it to be a pure nightmare"to much movement" whithout a remote. I was looking at some of the more expensive remotes but this remote seemed to have everything i needed.. Ive had it for 3 weeks now and dont know how i would film without it.. i would recomend this remote to anyone who's looking for one..

Use with a Canon XH-A1 on Manfrotto 547B tripod. Using mainly for high School Football Games on the Press Box. But will use for basically any and all tripod shoots. Also added a second handle to the 701HDV fluid head, for great pan/zoom control.

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
This is a great little controller for the XH-A1. It works just like the studio cam controls and makes shooting on a tripod a little less cumbersome with a handheld camera.
The one thing I would change is to give a larger hardware option to attach the controller to a device with larger handles, such as the Shape shoulder mounted devices.

Works as it should, not complicated at all. Grips to my tripod arm just nicely. Wish it had a few different thicknesses of rubber bumpers to make the control just a bit more sturdy on the arm. Over all no complaints.

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
Simple to use, work well with my Canon HX A1S.
The zoom speed is harder to master then the one on the camera. The pressure/feel of it is less accurate than the camera zoom but after some use you get a hang of it.

I don't know how I lived without this great product. I gives you better control than the cameras zoom rocker to me. I got a second pan arm for my manfrotto tripod which allows me to control the tripod with two hands. The variable zoom control works likes it's suppose to.
I use this product with my XH-A1 and will get more for my other XH-A1's.

I can sum this up quickly. How did I live with out this for so long.
Great quality fits on my Manfrotto HDV501 arm perfectly. I bought a second arm to have two so I can have both hands on the tripod. Makes for steady smooth shots. I use this with one of my XH-A1's and the zoom rocker is smoother that the one on the camera. The pressure sensitivity is more controllable than the cameras zoom rocker.
AWSOME!!!

Great product - really frees up my hands so I'm not connected to the recorder any more. Love the speeds on the zoom

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
My old beat up used Canon GL-2's Zoom Rocker stopped working. I ordered the replacement part directly from Canon (for about $20) only to find that it didn't work either. This means the next step for me would be to spend major $$ sending it in to Canon for repair, meanwhile no camera to do my work OR buy a new one which I didn't have the money for! In came Canon ZR-1000 with fully working variable speed zoom rocker, it's the perfect solution. At just under [$] it was well worth it versus alternatives. Plus I can essentially keep this forever and use it with anything, I can mount it to a pan arm or gaffer tape it to the handle on my GL-2. The unit is quality, solid and quiet. I got a no name external zoom like this before but it had loud clicky sounds and wasn't of variable speed even though it claimed to be.

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
This control has worked for camera after camera for 8 years running. I've never had a hiccup with this unit, despite rain, heat and dust. It does a simple job and does it well. You can spend a lot more for remotes, but I've never felt the need. My only modification is to buy sightly longer screws to fit our BM handles.

Comments about Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote Control:
The only problem I found was that the mounting bracket was to small to fit round the pan arm on my fluid head, ended up using Velcro straps which as it turned out was a better option anyway.
