A Sony Z1U is the max. I feel you can get away with. Otherwise, go with the 4000 Glidecam.
DO NOT think you will master this unit out of the box. It takes a good 30 minutes to first assemble, then you must practice-practice-practice! Proper balance is the key. Without additional support, (arm and vest) you will tire quickly. I read another review about this being like holding a bowling ball with your arm extended, THIS IS TRUE!
I will say that for the money, this will blow you away! Really cool tool for dv style/size cameras.

When everything works the Glidecam does exactly what its designed to do. The setup is very simple and balancing a camera is relatively easy and only takes a few minutes calibrating it for a new camera (once you spend a few days getting used to how the system works).
I have to admit on the first day or so I wasn't sure the thing was worth the effort and I almost sent it back. But after the first three days (out of 12) of location shooting with it I realized how subtle and well designed the Glidecam is.
It takes a terrific amount of stamina and not a little strength to hold the camera for the shots. The Glidecam does an excellent job of leveling out walks/runs/skips/jumps etc, but it is your arm that has to hold the camera out in position for the whole shot. Although the 2000PRO system is rated to take up to a 6 lbs. camera - my experience was anything over about 4 lbs was far too heavy for me to be able to hold for any workable length of time.
The system is not complete with just the stabilizer. The system is almost impractical without the Forearm Brace, and a quick release plate ("Bogen 394 Rapid Connect") and if you intend to regularly shoot shots of longer than a couple of minutes, you will absolutely need something like the "Smooth Shooter" as it becomes almost impossible to hold your arm out for more than a couple of minutes. While not as essential as the above items: the "Docking Plate" is a very handy way to save your arm strength and quickly calibrate the unit.
Notes:
It is very difficult to control smoothly with any sort of wind or breeze. Extremely rugged terrain can make it difficult to keep the camera oriented. The counterweights are prone to shifting/slipping when system is laid down or stored for transport. I wish there was a way to isolate and lock the gimbal's pan rotation - as there are times when you could easily use your body to rotate and you just want the Glidecam to smooth out the pitch and yaw but not drift side to side. Any kind of rugged terrain makes using the camera's LCD impractical, either invest in the LCD attachment or use heads-up video glasses if you need to watch your feet while shooting.

Bought this item for sports videography and makes everything some much smoother. It takes a while to get used to setting up and if you want to invest in this kind of rig, definitely buy the manfrotto quick release plate so you dont need to rebalance the glidecam every time.
Really adds a professional look to your videos.

Comments about Glidecam 2000 PRO Camcorder Stabilizing System - Supports upto 6 lbs:
Glidecam 2000 Pro takes some time to balance , yes first day it took me 30 minutes to figure out. The manual that comes with it is ok but not very helpful. Youtube has great videos on tutorials to balance it.
If you are a " Arnold" you may be able to run with this for 10 minutes, i can do it only 2.5 minutes with it as its heavy.
currently running it with the 5D M II + Canon 17-40 f/4 and yes its good for this setup.
Once you get the hang of it to balance you can balance it in 5-6 minutes.
Remember the quick release has to be bought separate and it helps to keep the setup time to the minimum.
I feel this is good value for money and i preferred it over the 2000 HD was the price as the functionality and the gimbal are the same.
I never think that any shots are done at a stretch of 5-10 minutes and hence this is a good product, in case you are thinking of using it more than 5-10 minutes at each go and full day you should consider buying the vest and arm attachments.
its a boon for the DSLR filmmakers as it offers great stability.
Bottom line is practice with it and you will get good at it, i am still practicing on it and can do a few minutes with right and left hand.

If you're like me and you love moving along with your subject while filming, the glidecam is an incredible device. I'm a film student, but the filming I enjoy most is focused on action sports. In order to capture the movement I often have to run long with or behind my subject, and the glidecam lats me do this smoothly and beautifully. It takes a long time to balance, and every time you take your camera off and put it back on (or switch lenses, or in any other way modify the wight/ distribution) you'll have to rebalance it. It also takes some practice to get used to. The results, however, are worth it.

Comments about Glidecam 2000 PRO Camcorder Stabilizing System - Supports upto 6 lbs:
The Glide Cam 2000 Pro, gives the camera the floating effect when filming. You attach the camera to the top and counter balance it with weights at the bottom. This point of balance is difficult to find, with minor adjustments required to ensure that the camera is properly balanced.
I found that it took a couple of days and allot of patience, but once you get it, the effect is amazing, something which cannot be replicated without investing in tracks to ensure a smooth glide when filming.
The attaching the camera to and from the Glide Cam Pro 2000, is very tedious, so it is worth investing in the newer model of Glide cam, which has a quick release version as well as counter balance weights that are more easily removed compared to this version.
As mentioned before patience us a real virtue with this product. Add patience with time, and it is an excellent purchase.

I spent more or less a month trying to balance this thing with my canon t2i. It never happened. This thing is nearly impossible to do what you expect it to do. I read reviews like mine and still believed that I could get it to balance. I wish I would've listened. I sent this thing back and was much happier with my [$].

Comments about Glidecam 2000 PRO Camcorder Stabilizing System - Supports upto 6 lbs:
I got this product for the sake of having an inexpensive stabilizer that does the job just as well as an expensive one. However, there were problems from the very beginning. When I received Glidecam's 2000 PRO Camcorder Stabilizing System, I didn't even receive all the parts. The weights and hardware were missing. So I had to call customer service. They had to refer me to one of their guys' e-mail address and tell him my problem. Although, he was able to resolve the issue, I didn't get the parts until a couple of days later. So I couldn't use the stabilizer for an upcoming event that I had to film. However, (and here's the kicker) once I got the missing pieces and completed assembling the product, its weight was too heavy for a consistent operation. Furthermore, for a stabilizer, it wasn't really that stable. It's parts make it gyrate too freely and easily if you use it with one hand. You have to use two. Bottom line, it's learning curve to operate is too difficult. When I did some test footage, I have no idea if it did its job or not. To make things worse, you have to buy a real easy release plate for it because the one that comes with it is ridiculous.

Shooting video with a Canon 7D. Footage looks amazing with the glidecam. Make sure you purchase a quick release adapter for it (i chose the monfrotto 394). Balancing it is a pain, if you have the $$$, i'd go with the HD version. Worth the money for the smooth video footage though.

I use this product for professional video production. I own a limited liability company so I use this product for jobs. It is extremely hard to master, but gives a great image when used correctly.
Takes weeks to learn, but after you master it, it is awesome!
Just be sure to work your arms at the gym before trying to hold the glidecam and a camera for longer than 15 minutes. It feels like your arm is going to fall off.

This is a great tool for the price. But if you have more budget, you should get the HD version which seem to be easier to balance.
For low budget, this steady cam is working very well. Initial installation and balance took me around 30-45 minutes. Manual is not realy helping much. Read review and check tutorials on youtube for tips.
It is not easy to get the profesionnal moves, but it is improving with practice. Don't expect to be a PRO if you never worked with this kind of tool. You will need to practice, test, pratctice and practice again. I wasn't sure of my choice after few hour of frustrating test...but now it's ok... If you think you snap your camera on it and your ready to go, you will be dissapointed...
This is working like a charm with my D7000 18-135 mm. The camera seems to fly in the air. It is not so loud, but you can't handle this for more than few minutes, unless your are mr. mussle
I also tried with my Sony HDR XR500 which already have a pretty good built-in stabilizer and it's even beter. When I add my water proof case, it's become very loud since you have to add more weight to the glidecam. It become very difficult to keep in in one hand for more than couple of seconds...
I also strongly suggest you a quick release plate for this, since you will have to dissassemble the top plate every time you need your camera alone. This is very anoying because you will loose 15 minutes of your time re-balance it from start. I purshased the manfrotto 577 quick release, which is probably not the best one, but I managed to fit it in place. You may search on the net for compatible ones... or go directly in store to test it. There are 3 holes under the 577, and only one can be use at the time and it may move easily.
The central post can be move very easily, in fact more than I thought. It is mount on a ball bearing and the wind alone can make the camera pan ! Not sure if it the right technics, but I have to use my other hand to keep the camera pointing where I want. If I only use the gimble, it will stay for a moment but will easily pan when I dont want... There is not much help on the net on thechnics to use it. You will much likely find way to balance it, but not use it once balanced.
so, to conclude, great purshase, but dont expect to be a pro out of the box. be prepared to take some time to balance it ( every time you use it).

Take a deep breath and have a little patience when you start to balance this thing. It's not hard, it just takes some time, like 20 minutes (put on some music and plan to work on it for an hour and you will be done in 20 minutes) also you need to practice moving around and following some one to get your framing right. I got pretty good results on my first try, my second try was great. Can't wait to do more with it.

I waited for a long time making my own steady cams and using the software in FCP to do the job for me because I didn't want to spend the $300. I booked a wedding and decided to get it, was set up in about 10 minutes, and with a little practice I got much smoother footage than I could have trying to use the one I made myself with the smooth cam filters in Final Cut. I use it with a Nikon D7000 and 20mm 2.8 Its not as heavy as people say. Steady camera shots are number one for production value, tripod, rails, monopod... any of it, and this makes it seem like cinema. Check out the link of my first video done with it. to see the smooth footage you can get with a little practice. Just roll your feet.[@]

Comments about Glidecam 2000 PRO Camcorder Stabilizing System - Supports upto 6 lbs:
I purchased this with a manfrotto low profile quick release with level. I love this glidecam. Now that I have it all set up and pretty much balanced, I just have to clip my 60d into the quick release, fold and tuck the strap under the corner of the camera, make some small adjustments to the bottom front weight, and I am up and running in about a minute. It has given me incredible shots right off the bat. I had to walk some beaches with soft sand and the shots came out beautiful. If you get it well balanced you can take your guiding hand off the glidecam for smooth pans or cranelike moves. You suddenly have the ability to do extremely creative movements with surreal stability. When I saw that beach footage the first time, I felt that the footage looked slowed down and dreamy, until you see people moving around fast. The hd2000 is well worth the money, the bearings work smoothly, the rig was easy to assemble and balance, and it looks pretty proffessional so people dont mind having it stuck in their face. But the ultimate payoff with this glidecam is that anyone can set it up and use it to get great results. I see additional products like wrist support or vests being sold to assist in holding the glidecams, I dont think this is needed. Using a dslr with a heavy lens, battery grip, microphone, and the weight of the glidecam with washers, I did have some initial wrist soreness. But those addons will just restrict your ability to be smooth with the glidecam. Just keep using the glidecam and your strength will improve. It is great exercise, and you get awesome shots while being more creative and stabil than ever. I absolutely love this product for summer weddings, I can't wait to use it skiing this winter. My only issues with it are that in confined spaces I will bump some part of it against myself or something else. When you bump this thing it will really go flying, soft touch.
