While an excellent ultra-wide zoom lens for film SLR cameras, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens is especially well suited for use with EOS digital SLR cameras, which usually have an imaging sensor size smaller than the 35mm format. When used with such digital SLR cameras, the 17-40mm focal length range gives an angle of view approximately equivalent to that of a 27-64mm lens upon 35mm cameras, making it an ideal medium-aperture standard zoom lens.

The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM, like all of the Canon "L" lenses, delivers optical performance equal to similar fixed focal length lenses, with silent, high-speed focusing. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such amazing capability. It combines 1 high-precision molded glass aspherical lens and 2 replica aspherical lenses to achieve the extended zoom range, while also correcting for common aberrations that arise during zooming. A Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass element minimizes the chromatic aberration of magnification which tends to occur with wide-angle lenses, to help eliminate color bleed along the edges of the subject and achieve high image contrast and resolution.

The 17-40's minimum focusing distance is just 11" (28cm) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, which makes it very useful for close-up work. All of the focusing and zooming action is done internally, with no changes of the size of the lens. It only uses lead-free optics to help the environment, and features a circular diaphragm for improved background blur. The housing is water and dust resistant to help ensure reliable performance for both professionals and enthusiasts. Like many "L" lenses, it uses 77mm filters, but also has a rear gelatin filter slot behind the lens mount.

This lens is a Canon 'EF' series lens, indicating it is for use with full-frame cameras. It works equally well with APS-C format DSLRs.

While this lens doesn't offer an aperture larger than f/4, don't let this minor set back deter you - especially if you're looking to save a few shillings by not dumping a shoots worth of dough on the 16-35 f2.8L II. Right out of the box, I was like a kid on Christmas. Purchased to replace my trusty Tamron 17-50, this lens did not fall short of my expectations. Very sharp, & just wide enough on full frame and cropped censor bodies. Used mainly for events, with flash - so f/4 is just open enough for me. And, anything shot outdoors - landscape/cityscape - the aperture ring won't even dream of being closed down lower than f/11 anyhow. So, if you're on the fence, looking to upgrade, or need a friends for your camera bag inhabitants, believe me, the Canon 17-40 f4/L is the lens for you.Con: Flag on the play! Do not purchase the Canon 77mm UV Filter to protect this lens. It's glass is set to shallow in the filter ring and touching occurs between the front lens element of the Canon 17-40 f/4L and the filter - caught this just in time I might add, 2 minutes after opening the box! Just be cautious when putting on any filter. Check to make sure the convex shape of the front element does not encroach on your filter's territory.

As a professional photographer, my clients require that I provide them with the best images I can. That means that I have to have some of the best glass available. I own two L-Series Canon lenses and am extremely happy with them no matter what I put them through. However, this ultra wide 17-40 f/4l isn't anywhere close to the quality of the other Canon L-Series lenses. This lens has tremendous vinetting and soft edges as opposed to my other ultra-wide lenses at one-third the price. Most ultra-wide lenses will give you soft edges, but this lens seems very prone to it -- and I use it on a full sensor Canon 5D.

My advice: either save your money for the f/2.8, or buy a less expensive ultra-wide.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

As I use a Canon EOS-1D Mk 1V most of the time, this particular lens gives me an effective working range of 22-52mm, making it a very versatile short focal length zoom. As the 1.3x magnification factor allows me to utilize the center of the lens, I have no trouble with any image quality fall-off in the corners. I find it a very well made lens in the L series tradition, and now wonder why it has taken me so long to get around to buying one. To me, it seems far better value than the double-the-price 16-35mm f/2.8L unless you really need that extra stop. A cracker of a lens.

I use this lens with a Canon 5Dmk2, shooting 1080p video "beauty shots" on lakes and ponds, rivers and streams. I am totally pleased with the footage I'm getting with it... My other main lens is a CANON EF 70-200/4L IS USM, which compliments the 17-40 nicely.

This lens delivers beautiful results. I originally had my eye on the 16-35mm 2.8L however the price of that one is just too outrageous. This lens is the best value in my arsenal. I also recommend the Hoya 77mm (Moose) Warm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter with this lens.

I was very surprised with the quality of this lens, it's actually sharper them my 70-200 and 24-70, I use it mostly for landscape and bmx photography, I don't normally use uv filters i normally just use the lens hood but i think a filter is a must to protect this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I have had this lens for about 3 months now. I got it right before a trip to Yellowstone and surrounding areas. It proved to be very useful. Previously, I had the Tokina 11-16 2.8, but I quickly discovered I was not happy with the outcome. I also had the 28-135mm lens - which overall was great, but couldn't get quite wide enough on my 7D. Of course I contemplated the 16-35 2.8, but I wanted to invest that extra 800 bucks elsewhere.
I have found this lens to produce great images. I use it mostly for landscape work. There is significant distortion even on a 1.6x crop camera, however some can be fixed in post processing and some kinda looks neat...and considering a tilt shift lens is about 3x the price, you learn to live with it.
I have not found much need to have IS with the lens. Handheld at 1/40 can produce good results. I usually bump up the ISO a bit if I need to keep the aperture fixed so that I don't have to use slower shutter times.
I have not found many instances where I wished I had gotten the 10-22. I think that is a whole different comparison. As I said, 17mm is usually wide enough. I don't have any problems photographing cars at that focal length (I sure did with the 28-135 - had to be too far back and people always got in the way).
I recently used it in the Crystal Caves at Sequoia NP, along with the 580EX II flash and got pretty darn good results at ISO 400; f/5.6; 1/60; and autofocusing.
Overall, I am really happy with this lens and have no intentions of getting rid of it.

This lens is perfect for all purpose use. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that it is an f/4--I really wish canon made a 2.8 version.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

I am an advanced amateur that does a little freelance work on the side and I have been looking for a wide zoom to pair with my 7D. I was looking at the 10-22 EF-S but wanted to future proof my lenses for a FF so got this instead.

I have been very pleased indeed with the results. Colour reproduction is good, my copy is sharp right throughout the range and it is built like a truck.

Focusing is quick and accurate and I love that it is all internal movement - very handy when it spends a fair bit of time outside. L glass is great for its weatherproofing and this is no exception. It is surprisingly good up close as the minimum focal distance is very short.

My biggest gripe is the f/4, if it was only 2.8 I would be ecstatic.

I would recommend this to anyone and although it is nowhere near as wide as the 10-22, the other feature make it well worth it.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

This lens is currently being used on a 40D that is about to get upgraded to a 7D. I have owned and used a number of lenses on my 40D.

At first, I used the 18-55 mm kit lens but upgraded to Tamron's SP 17-50mm F/2.8 lens. I loved this lens – it was small and light with excellent image quality. However, living in a humid, subtropical place and using it in more challenging conditions (sometimes in wet weather), I put it away for a few weeks only to pull it out again and find it full of fungus. It then went straight into a dustbin.

Then I got the 24-105 mm L lens, and while I found it excellent for people photography, on a crop camera it was rather too long for landscapes and much outdoor photography.

The 17-40L offers bullet proof build quality, and focal length changes entirely within the sealed casing, enhancing dust and water resistance. By the way, although claimed to be dust resistant, I was surpised during my ownership to find the 24-105 mm L, even with a filter, was not entirely so. For genuinely high dust environments the EF 17-40 is a better option.

17-40L image quality is excellent, comparable to the 24-105 mm and probably slightly better than the Tamron 17-50 mm. It is better value for money than the EF 16-35 mm f2.8 L II USM, but somewhat of a niche lens on a camera with an APS-C size sensor. It is best best purchased for this format in the following circumstances:

                          • When one is looking for a professional build quality, wide angle to close to standard zoom range lens, especially if needed in high dust or moisture environments.

                          • When most of your photography is out-of-doors, and people and portraiture are not your primary subjects, and image stabilization is a bonus rather than essential.

For me this is the case, so this is going to be a keeper lens. However, if this does not apply to you, then Canon's better quality EF-S standard zooms are better options. If looking for a L standard build quality in a 'people' lens, then the EF 24-105 mm L is recommended, and its image stabilization is a great advantage in low-light environments.

It is unfortunate that the EF 17-40 L is not image stabilized, but as this is after all intended as a wide angle lens on a full frame camera. It is unfortunate that Canon's professional grade lenses are intended for full frame platforms, as many enthusiasts will stay with APS-C sensor cameras but would buy a L quality, standard zoom EF-S lens, if this were available.

Comments about Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens:

Purchased this lens to replace a Tamron 11-18mmm 4.5-5.6.

Obviously the Canon is a much more superior lens in all aspects.

Build quality is very nice and it's got a nice weight to it. Not heavy, but has a solid feel to it.

Since I'm shooting with a crop body(7D), only thing I wish was different would be it being a wider lens such as a 14mm or so and a little faster for low light situations.

The 16-35 2.8L from Canon would be closest to that range but over double the price so my funds only allowed me this lens for now.

Overall, I am very happy with the lens
