A speed ring is required and not included with this unit. Remember to get the best type of speed ring for the light you are using.
This is a Photoflex HalfDome 2, Small Softbox , 9.5 x 35 x 17.5" (23 x 90 x 45cm). Photoflex makes a wide variety of softboxes for use on your strobes or hotlights. LiteDomes and MultiDomes are for use with strobes only. SilverDomes and HalfDomes may also be used with hotlights. All Photoflex softboxes require a Speed Ring Adapter, which must be purchased separately.
Choose a softbox according to the size of your subject. For example, a small or extra small is appropriate for a head-and-shoulders portrait, or a very small still-life such as a paperweight. A medium softbox is good for a half-length portrait of an adult. A large is suitable for a group portrait of 3 - 4 people.
Choose a softbox interior color for the lighting effect you want. White is the most universal, giving the most softening effect. Silver gives a little more punch and crispness. Gold (with the MultiDome only) adds that punch, with a warmer tone.

- Use a fabric grid to greatly limit the spread of the light
- Use strip and circle masks to change the shape of a reflection on your subject -- example: a circle mask will make a more natural catch light in a subject's eyes
Note:Provide ample ventilation when using flash heads that have modeling lights. Do not use a modeling light higher than 300 watts with a LiteDome or MultiDome.

This halfdome/stripdome seems sturdier than my other Photoflex softboxes in that the fabric feels thicker althoughI've never had one rip anyways. The vents on the sides helps reduce heat but you can also creatively use reflectors to broaden the light if you wish. The front panel does seem just a little too small which makes it tougher to attach.

It feels quite a bit cheaper than similar Wescott/Chimera boxes, because it is. I put a small tear in one of them first time I set it up, but that was my mistake for trying to set it up without first popping the rods out the face end of the softbox..... only softbox I've ever seen with this design.
By popping the rods out the front of the box, and putting them into the speedring while they're laying flat, it does make setting the box up a bit easier.
Quality of light is great, it's pretty hard to screw up diffusing light through a white panel, haha!
I bought two of them to for a lighting setup I don't use very often, where it didn't make sense for me to spend more money on the more expensive boxes. These boxes are good to be used, but I wouldn't abuse them very hard.

Using as a rim light for portraits. Does its job great, putting both an AlienBees B800 and a Nikon SB600 into it. Can just be a little tough to setup at first, though I think it'll get easier over time.

I use the product to add a rim light with my SB-900. It works great to put the light where I need it without wrapping it and contributing to the main lighting. Need another one.

I use these for hair lights (with a grid). I use two of them overhead, either side of the camera, for small, almost shadow free product photography. Also good as kickers and for half body, hot white background illumination.
The 'QR' corners help with knockdown, but don't help with setup.
Silver interior would be more versatile but more expensive.

I have needed this product for a long time; and at such an affordable price I'm not sure why I didn't buy it years ago. It is the perfect hair light; making the control of light much easier and more precise than other things I've used for this purpose. I am delighted with it, and I highly recommend it!

Photoflex makes very high quality products. What I really like is that they combine quality materials with great engineering and design.
The only slight issue I have is that they had to make the box wider than the older ones because of the larger "octo" adaptor ring. They compensate by providing a black mask to narrow the size.
I still give it a 5

I waited too long to get this halfdome2 for a hairlight/rimlight softbox. It's perfect. The novatron adapter ring does not hold it as snugly as I would like.
