Sound Devices USBPre Version 1.5 - 2 Channel Portable Microphone Preamp with USB Interface for Mac OS or Windows
The USBPre 1.5 is a complete portable hardware interface for computer based digital recording. Designed for both Mac OS and Windows USB equipped computers, the unit quickly and easily interfaces studio microphones, line-level sources, musical instruments, and consumer audio electronics with personal computers. Its high-quality, 24-bit audio inputs offer the most direct signal path into the computer. However, since the unit is USB powered, a computer is necessary for the pre to function.
All analog-to-digital conversion is done outside of the computer, in the USBPre 1.5, for superior audio performance. S/PDIF coaxial I/O enables direct digital transfers into and out of the computer. It has the flexibility to work with most Windows and Mac recording, streaming, and measurement software. No additional power source is required since the unit is powered solely by the USB port, from either a notebook or desktop computer. The microphone preamp is a great solution for those looking for a durable and portable solution to the problems of location audio recording using a laptop computer.

I use the USBPre with a MacBook Pro and Sound Studio. It's perfect for field use and is ruggedly constructed. After installing the driver, it's plug-and-play. Audio quality is excellent, as Sound Devices are known for.
Sorry, I don't have any experience with using the USBPre with Windows.
