The Grass Valley ADVC300 is a bi-directional analog-to-digital video converter that provides analog filtering and is able to operate with or without a computer. As a standalone device it converts back and forth from analog media to DV (IEEE-1394). It also supports the DV codecs for conversion into a computer FireWire port.
Note! A video-capture card or OHCI FireWire (IEEE 1394) connection is required to capture DV.

I use the ADVC-300 to connect analogue video to my computer mostly. I have a business where I copy tapes to DVD and sometimes I need to edit the video as I go.
The unit is small and has most of the connections I need. Great bang for the buck.
The manual was written in Japanese first and then translated into English. It makes it hard to understand at times.
Details in the manual are somewhat scant too -- I would like to see a basic manual and an advanced manual.
The product has been on the market since 2002/2003, and they haven't updated the documentation or the CD-ROM since.
One of the demo software programs on CD installs OK, but a warning dialogue appears when I run it. I tried looking for an updated version of it on the Canopus website, but it was not listed.
The manual adjustments on the top of the screen has somewhat clunky interface. Once I started using the software control for adjustments, I found that to be a lot more intuitive.
The best thing that I've found so far are the two rows of DIP switches on the bottom of the unit. This makes the ADVC-300 very configurable.
I also like the fact that the product is bi-directional and can work with or without a computer: a smart breakout box in effect.
I have used other, higher priced hardware solutions, and I would say overall that the ADVC-300 is very good overall for the price point.
I am very pleased with it.

This product offers bi-directional Analog Video to Digital Video conversion (and Digital to Analog video) in a single unit and also supports the capture of Analog Video (both composite and S-Video) by a suitably equipped (1394a) computer.
So far it functions as intended. However, I am keen to see what optimisations are possible.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
Converter is used to copy analog video to a computer for customers who want their video on DVD. Converter is simple to use, stabilizes the picture. So far, copied about 23 tapes for customers, no problems.
Manual doesn't really add much and wasn't required for my use. But, it could be difficlut to understand for those not knowing what setup to use.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
If you are like me, you have shoe boxes full of 8mm, Hi8mm, and VHS Tapes laying around that desperately need to be converted to digital. This is the device you need and want! My editing software recognized it immediately and my first video that I did was terrific! I would highly recommend this to anyone. Avoid the cheap video capture devices that you find in the big box stores. They just aren't worth the money! The ADVC300 not only produces a clean picture, but the audio stays in perfect sync as well! You won't get that from the cheaper video capture devices that everyone is selling these days. Money well spent, you won't be disappointed with this!

I like the many settings available, but wish the software was compatible with Lion. It makes me do any required adjustments manually.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
Direct rca from vcr thru ADVC300 to G5 via firewire. I did not install Picture Control software and yet the box stabilized, cleaned and enhanced 25-year-old vhs tapes in realtime without hesitation. The resulting dvd or quicktime movie actually looks better than the original vhs - from 25 years ago. Price is a very fair. Should have made the box a bit heavier so it sits still - it must be physically held down, but that's not hard to accomplish.

Works perfectly sending analog audio and video via firewire, without losing "sync". There aren't any dropped video frames either. I higly recommend it.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
I use this to convert 20-year old VHS tapes to digital. These old tapes were not professionally-done and are very low quality. While the converter can't improve the quality, it maintains it superbly. Also it keeps the audio in sync with the video perfectly, no lags.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
I've tested both the ADVC110 and the ADVC300 on the same worn VHS tapes, and I can say that the ADVC300 does a superior job of capturing. The ADVC110 was dropping video sync on one particular tape recorded in 1987 – the stream just stuttered in some places and caused short blackouts. The stream re-established, but audio sync was then off. I tried the same tape with the ADVC300, and achieved excellent results. Some frames were dropped in the capture, but they weren't noticeable, and the audio sync remained intact.
The ADVC300 is streets ahead of all the other capture devices I have tried (4 in all). Mind you it is more expensive than all the others.
The hardware works flawlessly with Windows 7 64 bit, and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. The included Picture Controller 300 software also works seamlessly within Windows, and by Firewire controlling the ADVC hardware. The software adjustment is extremely useful for changing video brightness, and white peak adjustment, etc. You cannot completely turn off all noise reduction and the LTBC, but the output still looks better, even on high quality tapes, than that from the ADVC110, which has no noise filters.
An excellent box for high quality video capture. This is the most stable and best looking VHS and Video 8 output to a PC that I have seen.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
I am using this to convert old home movies to digital format, via Apple's Final Cut. Imports beautifully. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the controller software will not be compatible with the OS upgrade for Mac coming out next month (Lion), and the company has no plans to upgrade it. Which means that any special parameters will need to be set by using the DIP switches on the bottom of the box, which works but is more of a pain.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
I needed something to capture VHS so I can make them into DVDs for my clients and this worked great right away! I can capture the footage right into Final Cut Pro which really makes things easy. The quality is great, and you can also adjust the settings with the ADVC3000 if you need to. I haven't needed to adjust the settings too much but they're nice to have. I would recommend this.

Comments about Grass Valley ADVC300 Bi-Directional Analog / Digital Converter w/Analog Filtering:
There are less costly products, but this is the best analog video to DV converter that I could find. I connect the analog input to a switch to easily select my SVHS or Hi8 tape decks. The analog output is wired to a monitor. DV output goes to the computer and Adobe Premiere Pro. Computer control of the conversion parameters is helpful, but adding another software application is helpful for waveform monitors, etc. for precise adjustments.
