It's also perfect for macro photography !
The power at 200 asa is just enough for most purposes.
Unfortunately two of them burned out some component, but neverteless I bought two new ones at B&H, there's nothing like it on the market !

first time out use as a fill in flash. Working in digital media format this was great for getting the exposure correct. Recycle time fair to good. Normally I shoot with a QFlash. Light quality very good. Not too cold. While it has a hot shoe it needs the sync cord to work.
Got a few head turners or that could have been the model. As a key light it was great!
At the end of the day would I reccommend - Yes. But not as your workhorse flash. But good none the less.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
This flash is not for every occasion, but is quite useful when needed.
Quality of built a bit deceiving, but ok considered the price.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
It does at it suggests and adds a bright but flat, even light. The ability to use it as a slave is also very useful. The build quality is a little shoddy though, having the batteries barely able to fit in the spaces and the back panel bulging because it doesn't fit properly. It's very bulky, but that was as expected.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
There's nothing wrong with this flash and it gives off a nice even, and soft light but I work in a Portrait Studio and we take Passport Picture. This will not make it so the background is white enough, it will look gray and that isn't acceptable for a passport picture.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
For soft fill, these are great. I had to shoot a room with a highly reflective floor, and these flashes gave a soft even glow without giving me hot spots. Not bad for the price

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
You can't expect many features at this price. The option of using an external power source is nice. Light output is decent and uniform. Cycle time is on the slow side, ~8 seconds. It doesn't have variable output. The hot shoe mount doesn't have any contacts so I couldn't use it with my wireless trigger which doesn't have a PC connector.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
[...]In installing the flash on my camera I noitce that it was not stable. In checking as to why I fouind that the mounting screws for the flash to the head unit part that connected to the shoe on the camrea had a defect. [...] I had to go out to buy a flash then! But for other than the defect I would have used it!

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
I just purchased this online and its probably the only one in Australia at this moment. Great for portraits and products. Needs creful metering however this becomes easier. Great for indoor portraits however a bit bulky and maybe fragile for constant outdoor useage. The main advantage is the soft-box lighting effect for portraits. I am about to get a second one as 2 can be mounted together.

Comments about Sunpak FP-38 Flat Panel Flash:
This thing is a dream come true for a lot of differentshooting situations, and has plenty of power. The onlyproblem is that the unit I got is falling apart after 5months of very light use. The slave cell isn't workinganymore except with REALLY bright trigger flashes, and thesync cable is intermittant. This is unusual for Sunpak. Ithink I just got a bad one.
Problems Encountered: Unit I got is falling apart after 5 months of very lightuse. The slave cell isn't working anymore except with REALLYbright trigger flashes, and the sync cable is intermittant.Sometimes only one of the 4 flashtubes will fire.
