The Azden SGM-1000 is a professional super-cardioid shotgun microphone designed for capturing audio for video, ENG/EFP, sound reinforcement or general recording applications. The super-cardioid polar pattern is highly effective in attenuating noise and ambiance at the sides of the capsule.
The wide frequency response, high dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio make the SGM-1000 suitable for applications that demand broadcast quality audio capturing. A low frequency roll-off switch eliminates noise and rumble at 200Hz. The 3-pin XLR male output connector is a low impedance connector allowing complete compatibility with 3.5mm (1/8") mini connections as well as professional XLR female inputs. The SGM-1000 can be powered with an external 12-52VDC phantom power source or a single AAA alkaline battery.

I have only used this Mic once, and it was mounted directly on the camera shoe for my AG-DVX100B camcorder with a foot long XLR cable plugged directly into the XLR input on the camcorder and I couldn't be happier with the results. Even with the bass turned down (the mic has two settings) and phantom power, this mic picks up everything very clearly and the voice tones are rich and deep. Even from behind the mic or several feet away this mic picks up clear mid and high range tones and for the price it's a winner in my book. Having some experience with audio, I think the audio track will likely need some "tweaking" in post for equalization and compression, so I would recommend an audio package that can deal with those things. I use Reason 4.0. It's a music program, but it has a fantastic mastering suite and you can dump any kind of wav or aiff file into it. Just get it the way you want, save the settings for more audio files, dump the files back into FCP or whatever NLE you are using and you should be good to go. I haven't used Soundtrack Pro yet, so I might be making more work for myself than I have to. A couple of other things I like is that it comes with a case and a decent "floating" mounting system that can either be hooked up to a boom pole or mounted on the camera and the noise dampening is excellent.

SGM-1000 Super-Cardioid Shotgun Micropho
I like it, however, it isn't as powerful as a much smaller Sennheiser MKE 400 that I tested side by side.

THIS IS MY 2nd ONE AFTER HAVING MY FIRST BROKEN IN A CAR ACCIDENT . I USE THIS ON MY SONY V1 U . HAVING USED BUILT IN MICS SINCE THE VHS DAYS , I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO PICK UP VOICES THAT ARE NOT CLOSE TO THE CAMERA . I READ MANY REVEIWS OF SHOTGUN MICS BEFORE PICKING THIS ONE AND WOW ! I CAN HEAR WHAT IS BEING SAID AS IF THEY WERE CLOSE TO ME . THE SOUND QUALITY PUTS THE V1U'S ON BOARD MIC TO SHAME . I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO A FRIEND . HECK , I BOUGHT IT TWICE .

Great mic for the price. Used for a week long shoot in forests, mountains, river valleys, etc. Held up in light drizzle, wind, and other tough situations. Audio was good from several feet away. Would recommend for indie film shoots, documentaries, etc. Mounted to camera, not on boom. Cool mic.

Records quality audio. But after 3 feet away from subject, harder to pick up audio from subject over background audio. This is a problem if you have to mount this otherwise great mic to your camera.

I used the shotgun mic for a documentary and was pretty surprised on the good quality. I was filming on a motorized boat and it was also pretty windy but I was able to pick up interview questions clearly and nat sounds as well.

Really good sound quality, the phantom power option is great not having to carry a lot of extra batteries.

With the limitations of most built in camcorder microphones, this mic is a great addition to any videographer's equipment inventory. Really impressed with the sensitivity.
I do a lot of outdoor shooting, and this mic picks up sound from quite a distance. I am very satisfied with this product.

Great mic. used it on a shoot and got great sound (probably only a skilled professional would be able to tell it's not high end).
Problem is, i'm trying to find a mic stand for it and the thread size is irregular so this is proving very difficult.

This is a great shotgun microphone, does just about everything they say it will do. Very sensitive, picks up dialog and ambient noise very well. Its probably lightweight for its class, but I found it to be too heavy for my use (I use a steadicam). Other than that, no complaints.

While this is by no means top of the line, this mic is pretty darn solid for its class. Has a nice sound and very versatile. Picks up nice dialogue. Fits easily in most small camera bags.
