This is an excellent Lens. It is extremely versatile as a Macro and as a portrait Lens. The images are excellent quality. The only downside is that on occasions it is a little slow to gain focus, but with a litte patience the results are amazing. Having an F/2.8 at this price more than compensates for the slowness. I would recomment to a good amateur

I use this lens in conjunction with a Sigma ring flash and Canon T1i body to take portrait and intraoral photographs. I have found it to be plenty fast for my purposes, focuses well and all that. Would definitely recommend it for anyone taking macro or close-up photographs.

Nice crisp macro shots. DOF is awesome. Manual focus is a must but certainly not a show stopper. Nice padded case. I only gave it 4 stars because I don't care for the screw in lens hood, with it attached you can't attach the lens cap. Otherwise I have no real complaints.

I was looking to supplement my standard Rebel XTi lenses with something a little faster I could use for my kids' indoor athletic events, and this fits the bill! An added bonus is the macro functionality, which has inspired me to get creative!

I'm strictly a casual photographer but have a creative/technical background in the graphic arts. Therefore I consider myself to have a discerning eye, and the image quality of this lens when paired with my EOS is terrific.

I mainly use this for macro work. Beautiful color and easy use. I do like the way you can go from AF to manual focus with the slide on the lense. I also have used lense for portraits and can't find any real negatives with this lense. I would definetly recommend this lense to others

My wife and I are new at macro photography. This is the first lens we have had, and are just really learning how to use it to its potential.

This lens takes crystal clear shots. I can focus it down to about 2 inches! It is a bit tricky to get used to focusing this close, but I would assume that is the case with any macro lens.

This lens looks really great on our Cannon EOS. It has a good amount of heft to it, which always makes me feel good abou the construction. It is still light enough to be comfortable carrying all day. We will be useing this lens for all of everyday photography from now on. It is a great all around lens.

Didn't know that it has two settings for auto/manual focus. Took me a bit to find out why it wouldn't work until I discovered the switch on the side of the lens. Otherwise I've gotten good results. [...] Lee Wuenn

If you want to shot macro pictures you must focus in M mode althought is a geat lens

This is the perfect lens for me. It's light enough so that I can hand-hold it easily when in the macro mode. It is also a good portrait lens. I like it a lot.

This was my first Sigma lens, and it's a beauty! The macro work I've done with it has been astounding - it's allowed me to create photos that I just can't make with any of my other lenses. I personally think that the autofocus is very quick and quiet. Depth of field is so shallow when working tight in macro mode, it doesn't really seem fair to blame the auto focus if it selects and area a few millimeters off from what you wanted - it can't read your mind! I actually have found that my favorite use for this lens is doing flower portraits. The bokeh it produces at f/2.8 is amazing, especially when isolating an individual flower or insect from everything else. I've also found it to work nicely for people portraits as well. The build is solid the finish has a nice texture to it, making it easy to hold when sweating hunched over small flowers on a hot summer day!

Good value for money with this one.
Manual focus works best, I use an EOS 20 D but not a big issue for what I want to do.

The closeup capability is more than I imagined. See the texture of the rose!
Have to get used to the narrow depth of field and the need to use manual focus.

I have used both this lens and the Canon equivalent for flower and insect photography and I would have to recommend the Canon for the following reasons: focus noise (this lens has the noisiest AF I have ever used), focus speed (this lens is the slowest focusing lens I have ever used), focus accuracy (below average, focus hunts often too), awkward two step process to switch from AF to MF, no FTM, and this lens extends as the magnification increases. On the plus side, this lens delivers similar sharpness and its recessed front element protects the front element from getting damaged. But for only $15 more at the time of writing, the Canon equivalent is a much better buy.

This was my debut in macro work with my Canon 40D. Early AM at a butterfly center afforded great opportunity. The resolution (with and without flash) was superb. Very easy to use. Focuses with great facility and accuracy in auto and manual modes. I have no reservations about recommending this product.
