As the Canon top-of-the-line professional flash for the EOS-system, the Speedlite 580EX takes the best features from existing models and adds functionality that enhances digital photography. A more powerful flash with a maximum guide number of 58/191 at ISO 100 in meters/feet (at 105mm focal length), faster recycling, more consistent color and enhanced controls are among the improvements that all photographers, especially those who shoot digital, will find useful.
The Speedlite 580EX flash is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II (Evaluative Through The Lens) auto exposure technology. When combined with a compatible Canon camera (EOS-1D/s Mark II, D-20, Elan 7N/E) and compatible lens, E-TTL II utilizes subject distance and other information that automatically modifies flash power, resulting in accurate flash exposure regardless of subject size, reflectance, or photographic composition. This is great for photographers that shoot high contrast or reflective subjects, like those encountered in wedding photography. Photographers can now capture every detail from the black of tuxedos to the white of wide smiles and wedding dresses.
In addition, when color temperature data is automatically transmitted from the 580EX, the camera sets the color balance for the optimal flash shot.

I've used the 580 since soon after it came out, when after some research and thought I bought it to replace my 550. At the time I was using it on my 7NE, and I liked it a lot, if only for the smaller size and faster recycle time that others have mentioned. For about the last year and a half I've been shooting with my 1VHS with a mint condition 1NHS as a backup and it works fine with both. It gives wonderful subtle fill flash and allows me to drag my shutter wonderfully -- I can't imagine another flash doing more. In addition to the previously mentioned points I really appreciate the catchlight and wide angle screens. In short, IMHO, if you're trying to take your photography to the highest possible level, this is one of the items you should seriously think about adding to your equipment bag.The only addition I'd like is a battery level indicator ANYWHERE, but if one's not forthcoming I can live without it!

Problems Encountered: Keep some fresh batteries handy -- as I said there's no indicator that tells when they're low.

Comments about Canon 580EX Speedlite E-TTL II Shoe Mount Flash:
I have had the 550 along with 2 420s with my Canon digital. When I got the 580 I could not believe that it was so much better than the older models. It is smaller faster and quicker plus more powerful. I also got the Canon Battery Pack CPE3 which takes 8 AAs and this unit, which fits in your shirt pocket makes the 580 capable of keeping up with my 30D shot for shot. I would however get 2 CTA AA rechargeable packs at$20 each to use in the CPE3. I have rechargeables in the flash and the pack. You will save hundreds a year. All of the above is available at B&H

I hesitated for a year to upgrade from the 550 to the 580 because, on paper, I did not see much advantage. In fact, the 580 is a worthwhile upgrade. I like the new dial on the back for adjusting exposure compensation, etc. and the catchlight screen is a nice touch but the biggest advantages are the incredibly fast recycling time and smaller size. I can machine gun my 1Ds2 and this flash keeps up. The 550 could not. It is small enough not to overwhelm my little Rebel too. I did note that there is some vignetting at 24mm with a direct flash unless I drop the wide lens screen. The manual says this will not happen but it does. Not a big deal since I use a Gary Fong diffuser or bounce flash almost always. I just wish the LCD screen was a bit bigger and brighter for my old eyes.
