The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG lens is a compact and lightweight constant f/2.8 aperture zoom lens and is optmized for digital SLR cameras, but can also be used with film SLR cameras. The 28-70mm zoom range makes this lens the ideal choice as a standard zoom lens for photojournalism or general photography.
The lens is specially optimized for digital SLR cameras, and Super Multi Coating gives superb color performance whilst cutting down flare and ghost. Two SLD elements and four aspherical lenses provide the ultimate correction against distortion as well as all types of aberration, especially spherical aberration. Its advanced optical design ensures high performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Note: This lens (similar to Nikon "G" type lenses) does not have an aperture ring on the lens, and is only fully compatible with the F6, F5, F100, N80, N65, N60, N55, N50, N4004-series, PRONEA 6i, PRONEA S, D100 and D1-series (or any newer model) cameras. It is not compatible with other Nikon cameras. For the F4, N90-series, N70, N8008-series and N6006 cameras, only programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure mode can be used.
Note! AF not supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

I have noticed that most reviews are done within a month or two after getting the product, with relatively few done after a longer period of use. I wrote a review of this lens last April, when I had owned and used it for only one month, though it was used intensively, on a trip down to our beautiful Eastern Escarpment and then to the Kruger National Park.
I think that prospective buyers might like to know how the lens has stood up to extended use, so here's a follow-up report:
In short, after 16 months of use, I stand by every word I wrote about this lens last year. Colour rendition and sharpness are excellent, it's built like a tank and there is absolutely no sign of wear. Focusing is as quick and accurate as ever, and all other controls work like out-of-the-box. The lens stays on my D80 most of the time for everyday use.
This is an excellent lens and highly recommended for everyday, general use.
Though I am not a professional, I have used SLRs since 1964 and have taken thousands of photos, especially nature and wildlife pictures.

I bought one of these lenses in March 2008 and posted a very favourable review on 4/2/2008. I wrote an equally positive follow-up review on the same lens on 7/4/2009. I was extremely happy with that lens and as my son, who does semi-pro work, also fell in love with the lens, I gave it to him. I then ordered a new example from B&H on 12/2/2009.
Mechanically and optically, this new copy appears to be as good as the previous example, which continues to do sterling work for my son.
HOWEVER, THE NEW LENS IS FULL OF DUST PARTICLES! Most of these sit on the inside of the front lens element. I have not so far made any enlargements big enough to determine to what extent this dust degrades performance.
Out of a total of 7 Sigma lenses I bought over the years, this is the first one to be sub-standard!
I still think this is an excellent lens, provided you can get a clean example!

Comments about Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
It never focuses right. ESPECIALLY at f/2.8 which is why we all bought it. I'd rather have an old 28-70mm nikkor 3.5-4.5D. Just about every picture is blurred, if I zoom-in to see, in photoshop. Maybe I got a bad one but from what I can tell/read this is just a poorly made piece of glass. I strongly regret my purchase.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
Purchased for indoor photos without use of flash on a Nikon D90. PROS:At. 2.8 with low light and a high ISO (1000+), you have to keep pretty still to get sharp pics. So if you can't use the flash (churches, classrooms, plays ) this lens is perfect. The rest of the spectrum the pics come out great. Bokeh is pretty in any range. CONS: Lens is HEAVY, had to change the way I carry my camera because of it.
Overall the lens is awesome. Compared to what the NIKON cousin cost, this lens is a steal!

Comments about Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I read several lackluster reviews of this lens but took the chance anyways. So far it's proven them all wrong. Tack sharp at 28mm, 70mm and everything in between. The focus is dead on even at f/2.8. Slightly noisy, but no more so than any other lens I've owned. It's stayed on my D90 since it arrived.

I got this lens hoping it would be a great "all the time" lens. I wanted the f/2.8 so I could do indoor sports shots but at f/2.8 the focus was off. Whatever I focused on was blurred and a few inches back was in focus. At f/8 it was sharp as a tack but what good will that do when I bought it for the f/2.8. Sorry to say I sent mine back the next day and am now in search for something else. I had high hopes for this lens and was let down :( I'm too afraid to try sigma again
Also I didn't know prior that the zoom is backwards compared to Nikon lenses, that would have been hard to get used to after shooting only nikon lenses for the past 3 years.

I was a little hesitant to purchase this lens because there were only 4 reviews. But I have to say this lens performs very well. The focus was much better than I expected. Out of 250 sports-fast action shots, about 8 were out of focus (would have been fewer but I was in continous shot mode). I am very pleased with this purchase, especially for the price. This lens will stay on my Nikon D80 as my all-around lens.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
I loved this lens when I first bought my D50. Images were always sharp and focus was fast. Then one day out of no where the lens started creeping on me really bad and now it doesn't even creep, it runs (sorry, poor attempt at humor :p ). I have used it with my D300 and it has a back-focusing issue with this lens. Initially I thought it just might have been my poor vision, but after shooting both in manual and auto a lot of the pictures are just a tad out of focus.

I bought this lens one month ago and I´m really pleased with it. Sharp images and good colours. I realised a little focus bug sometimes, but it´s not a big problem. Of course it isn´t a nikkor, but it´s all right. Nice performance for this money.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D:
What a wonderful lens! Sharpness, colour rendition and contrast are all excellent! Mechanically, it’s built like a tank! And with that f 2.8 aperture, it’s a joy to work with! Focus is quick and accurate, and my old eyes love the bright viewfinder. Of course, like all zoom lenses, it gives its best results between f 8 and f 16, but even wide open it produces very good pictures indeed. Highly recommended as a general knock-about lens!
