First of all, you will rarely ever find a 2.8 zoom from Nikon for [$]but being that this lens is discontinued, consider yourselves lucky! That in itself is reason to buy this lens.Construction is solid metal for the lens. The mount, barrel, and filter threads are metal. The lens has weight and heft to it. It feels heavy and solid. The lens in not big at all. It certainly a lot more manageable than the 17-55, for me at least. The overall handling of the lens is great. This lens is a push/pull so be sure you like that. Some people don't but I love it. Push/pull also allows more creativity because you can easily produce some great zoom effects. The lens is 35mm fully extended and 70mm closed. The lens has a macro setting at 35mm. I rarely use it but it produces decent results...it's nice that it is there. The front element rotates so using a polarizer is going to be cumbersome. I don't use a polarizer for this lens so it doesn't bother me. If you buy the lens be sure to pick up the HB-1 hood. If you need a case for this lens, I think they discontinued the original case but the Nikon CL-0915 fits perfectly.I bought the lens because the 55-70 gap for me was annoying. I always wished the 17-55 would just go a little bit farther. I strictly use this 35-70 as a portrait lens as the range on DX cameras is good for that. 35 on DX is not wide so I wouldn't buy this as your primary lens as it will limit you on the wide end. For full frame or FX, this should be a great normal range lens.I use the lens wide open at times but I usually like to use it at F4 or F5.6 and you do see a difference there especially at the longer end.The sharpness, contrast, and color saturation of this lens is phenomenal. It looks as good or even better than my 17-55. I've seen some pro guys say that while this is a great lens, it doesn't compete with the 28-70 and the new 24-70. Those 2 lenses may have a slight edge on this lens but they are also 3X the price. If you're a pro guy who makes his living with his lenses, this might concern you, but for hobbyists like myself, I doubt you will see any difference between those 3 lenses in the 35-70 range.Just keep one thing in mind though. This is only a 2x zoom. I wish it was a 35-85mm lens. As good a deal as this lens is, be sure you can justify paying [$] for a 2x zoom lens. A 50mm 1.8 is 1/4 the price and is faster and should be sharper. If you need a zoom for your work because you can't move around, I think this lens is an outstanding choice. Pick one up while there still around!

I try to use it for weddings but I needed a 2.8 lens and sharp. Unfortunatly this lens is only the sharpest of it's power at 5.6. For general use if you are just starting than I recommend it. For the same or close to price you can get a better lens when you do a pro work. Under 5.6 you will see ghosting and flares. Not good in ambient light only or with just little flash fill. Only use this lens when you have enough flash. Outsdie with a lot of light you can use this lens all the time. For wild life outside during full day, very good. Never in dark.

This is a professional lens. I purchased this lens used from B&H for my D7000. The shots are terrific. The price you can not go wrong. It is built like a tank, easy to handle. You can not go wrong with this lens.

I use this product for Mid range Portraits mostly. Its Very sharp. IT is a much better deal that Nikon's New Huge 24-70 f2.8. That lens I way too big to cary around your neck. Also it just looks goofy. Lastly - [$]retail for it, vs.[$]for this older model - but still spanking new 35-70 f2/8. Its simply no competition. This lens wins!

I bought the sigma 24-70 f2.8 ex dg macro hoping to get a bargain. WRONG! had to return to the shop where i bought it a few times, and still didnt get good copies.

I bought this lens from BH instead. Import it to australia, which only took 4-5 days! Can´t be happier.

The lens is sharp. even at f2.8 at all focal length. It gets even sharper at f4 and f5.6.
The only thing annoying me is,the front element rotates during focusing and the operation is abit cumbersome by todayś standard.

But hey! at under 500 USD, this is the best lens you can buy. Get it now while its still available. I did, and i didnt regret it at all.

          Go and buy it.

I bought this lens specifically to use with my D2x. I cannot fault it in any way. It embodies everything we expect of a great lens...sharpness, excellent color, contrast and fine detail, not to mention exceptional build. The 35-70 f/2.8 renders the scene the way one sees it and, most remarkably, it does so at any aperture and speed setting, with the only limitation being apertures smaller than f/11, where defraction begins to set in. A great lens. At less than [$], it qualifies as something of a bargain.

I used two of these for probably over 12-13 years. Replaced it with the 28-70 2.8 and still ran tests every couple of months to see if I'd made a mistake, because I still wanted to pull it out and use it. F3, F4, N90, F5, F100, D2X it always performs beautifully. I get amused reading lens evaluations about it, a Nikon 20 2.8 costs [$]. That's about what this lens costs today. I paid about [$]for my first, and about [$]for my second. You couldn't find a Nikon pro who didn't have this lens in his bag. [...] It's a Nikon legend, you can't find a lens for [$]to beat it.

All I can say is: impressive. This lens I believe is overshadowed by the more modern ED lenses, but don't have any doubt, this is visibly the sharpest zoom in my arsenal, and wide open at 35mm I find it better than the Nikkor 35mm f/2 - which exhibits a tiny hint of a purple fringe. This lens does not! Using this lens I get a sense of confidence and pleasure about my shooting. Just get this lens! For under $500 you just can't do any better in my opinion. I found this lens to be sharp and versatile. I have used itin different situations and it surpassed any consumer gradelens i have. shooting at f 2.8 requires good focusing asdepth of field is very shallow (same with macro). build quality isexcellent. i guess will suffer from moisture as it does nothave rubberized sealing.Very easy to use, very solid feel, good manual focus. Willwork better with full size sensor cameras but on my DX worksgreat.

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

The reason this lens is such a great deal is because it is basically a 35-70mm F4.0. Anything below F4.0 starts to soften and halo slightly. F2.8 is for the most part unusable. I've done extensive testing and found that F3.5 is acceptable and sometimes F3.2. F5.6 is the sweet spot but I always shoot at F4.0. Contrast and color are fantastic. It sort of reminds me of my old 105mm F2.5.

                          Expertise: Pro, Wedding/Portrait

Problems Encountered: Way too soft at F2.8lens over time can start to become loose at the mount causing back focus problems. But it's easy to fix with tiny screw drivers you can but at the dollar store.

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I've owned my D200 now for about 6 months. My AF lenses are a 17-55 f2.8 DX and a 70-210 F4. I was kind of missing that in between area and felt this lens fitted the bill. It surely does and produces superb images.I understand that this lens is now discontinued, hence again my rush to grab one. This lens has been in production for 20 years, so it must be good. Non-D from '87-'92 andD from '92-'06.

Problems Encountered: BEWARE!!!!! I first bought this lens on ebay, described as hardly used and in excellent condition. On receiving it I immediately discovered fungus/mold in it. I then searched about this on the web and learnt that this lens is prone to mold problems if it is not kept in a dry area. I guess this is true for all lenses, but the 35-70 particularly. I posted the moldy lens back and immediately purchased a new one from B&H. Ordered on a Thursday and delivered first thing Monday morning to Australia, great service. There's many on the web that suggest buying new, much better than gambling with an ebay purchase when the price for new is so low.

Solid build, no creep on the push-pull zoom. Very sharp andgood contrast. Reminds me of German optics.I had wanted to buy the 28-70mm f/2.8 for a long time buteverytime, I held back because of the price and weight. Finally decided i buy this lens instead as I wanted to useit in my studio instead of the 17-55mm which can be a littletoo short for headshots. I'm very happy with this decision.

This lens is as sharp as a tack, built like a tank and does not drift down. The push pull is from the good ol days and takes some getting used to. I use this in my studio for portraits from head and shoulders to full lengths. The fixed aperture is critical to maintain good exposure. Strongly recommend this glass for the $

My brother loaned me his 35-70 and I was so impressed with the testing I did with it that I bought my own from BH Photo. It is my primary lens for general shooting including portrait and landscape. I did a detailed comparison between the 60mm micro, the 18-200 VR, and the 35-70 (all at 60mm F8 off a tripod to be fair) and here's what I found....The 60mm and the 35-70 were both too sharp to declare an obvious winner on my D200 camera. Both were superior to the 18-200 although a little sharpening in Capture NX did wonders for closing the gap. But I've shot floral closeups with the 35-70 that just make me say: 'wow'. Beautiful color and clarity that easily rivals the 60mm micro unless you get VERY close. Note that the real competitor for the 35-70 is the 28-70 F2.8 that sells for ~1400 bucks. Now let's see.....just as sharp....beautiful bokeh and color.....one third the price. Save the $900 and live with the rotating objective is my advice. I now use three pro lenses: The 17-35 F2.8, the 70-200 F2.8 VR, and my prized mid-zoom: My beloved 35-70. I heard Nikon is going to quit making them so I may buy another one just to have a backup in case I ever drop the one I have....better safe than sorry.

Problems Encountered: None. It's bullet-proof construction is simply wonderful. It's an older design that uses the camera's autofocus motors and so it's a little noisy, but I really could care less...

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I am on my second 35-70mm lens now. The first lasted aboutfive years before mold started growing inside on theelements. It couldn't be repaired.I consider that my fault since my camera bag wasn't entirelymoisture free. After buying my second one (seven years ago),I have put silica gel packets in my camera bag and have nothad any problems regarding mold. I recommend allphotographers do this. This lens is as sharp as they get. I use it on my Fuji S3sand my new S5 and due to the 1.5 magnification factor, thelens actually is a 52-105mm. This is perfect for doingnormal focal length shooting, as well as portraiture. Infact, I use it both at weddings and in the studio for all ofmy portraiture work.My only complaint is that it's not internal focusing(doesn't have the silent wave focusing motor) and thereforethe front focusing ring rotates. I just live with this bitof irritation. It's a push/pull zoom lens, but since I'm anold timer who has always used these types of zooms, thisissue also is not a big deal.I just bought another one of these lenses to keep in thestudio full time along with one of my Fuji S3s. I alsobought it because, according to Nikon, the lens is no longerin production. So once the stores run out of stock, that's it!For less than $500, with a METAL body and outstandingoptics, I recommend any serious or professional photographergrab one of these before you're left to the used ones on Ebay!

Problems Encountered: Lens is not sealed, so mold can grow inside if you don'tkeep moisture away. Keep a few silica gel packets in yourcamera bag and you should have no problems.

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

This is my most used lens because it is a good normalrange lens. Great for street/candid/walk around photography. Sharpness very nearly equal to the much more expensive28-70 f2.8 - smaller and lighter, too. Good build quality(metal not plastic), rugged. Not as intimidating tosubjects as the 28-70. Distortion, vignetting and colorfringing are negligible. Color rendition is neutral. It's a shame this lens lacks the glamour of the 28-70because it is one fine performer at a very affordable price.

Problems Encountered: It has a push/pull zoom (takes a little getting used to) andthe rear element moves while zooming which tends to pulldust into the camera body. Not a problem on film cameras butit is with a digital body. Just to make it a little worse,it sometimes moves the dust around so your dust referencephoto won't do you as much good. If you work in a dustyenvironment (like I do) you'll need to clone out a few dustbunnies and clean your sensor once in a while.
