One of Nikon's best lenses of all time and you can still buy it new? Yikes! This is a no brainer. Awesome sharpness, great color rendition, and beautiful bokeh.

I like this lens down to f2.0 for sharpness. f1.4 and f1.2 are okay but the images get a little softer IMO.

Overall great lens and I'm very happy to own this one.

This is a tough lens to use - you need a focus prism and best with a big viewfinder if you want to nail any kind of focus at 1.2. I use it with my D7000 and a Katz Eye prism and I constantly wish I had a bigger viewfinder when using this lens. Even so, I love it. The build quality and focus feel is a joy, and the shots I get at 1.2 can be stunning. There's a look to the bokeh that in many situations can be so much more interesting than the cream from my 85/1.4. It's on my camera whenever I'm going out at night or traveling through an old city or a garden and want some dreamy isolation. Stop down to f/2 and beyond and this lens ***can*** be viciously sharp. It's all about practice. I really recommend the HS-12 hood instead of the rubber stuff which just collects dust and doesn't really protect it. I use a 72mm lens cap on top of that hood to keep dust out.

This bright lens is used with both Nikon film cameras and a Nikon D700 digital camera with excellent results. The fast f1.2 allows easy focusing in even dim light. It cannot support auto focus or programmed operation on the D700, but it works very well in Manual, Aperture, and Shutter modes with manual focus. Most exposure modes are also supported with excellent results.

this is my favorite lens along with my 85 1.4g. not sharper than a 50 1.8 or 1.4 at smaller apertures, but at f2 - it's wonderful. at larger apertures, it's simply magic. somewhat soft at 1.2 but worth it. not easy to focus without a full frame with a focus screen. get a katz eye and you'll be set. forget the Zeiss 50's. the build and the feel of the focus ring are unparalleled. i adore it.

I have used this lens since 1979 its still one of the best I ever bought.In low light,action shots,even portraits. Some of the best bokeh I have ever taken with this beauty.And now I use it on my D300s the results are incredible.I can't fit all the shooting situations I've used this great lens for in this small space on either of my D300s or FE.

The colors coming right out the camera (using it on a D7000) are beautiful. The image quality is just fantastic -- a really wonderful lens.

Manual focus, as others note, is quite difficult wide open.

Great lens, manual-no problem. High quality glass. Small and excellent for still and video. I am using it on Canon 1Ds Mark III, Nikon D700 and Sony Nex 5. Great addition to my lens collection.

This lens is very special and it is not for anyone due to its unique characteristics to put to use. When used wide open, it gives some type of flare, a dreamy effect-like flare, which no other lens will produce. I think this lens is meant to be shot between f1.2~f2 or so. Really sharp from f2 and similar sharpness as other 50mm's there after.

It will be a real joy for serious shooters, in the sense that if you take advantage of the lens' particular behavior as aforementioned. If you are not one of this kind, just buy a 1.8D or 1.4G. and let us get addicted to this one.

Other users advised me of vignetting with HS-12 on FX, hence use of alternates such as HR-2 should be considered. BTW, both versions are provided with white real caps and not LF-1 but who cares.

This lens wiil definitely stay on one of your favorite bodies.

The most depth I've ever been able to achieve from a 50mm. It's super fast and reproduces flawlessly crisp images a stop up from 1.2. A bit hard to focus if you don't have a video tap or external LCD... using a waveform and built in LCD on my HPX170 proved a bit sketchy. Definitely recommend getting some external monitor for focusing! Otherwise... bust lens I have ever bought. Not a regret in the world!

Use on my Nikon D2xs (also purchased from B&H) This lens does everything they say it will. I stepped up to a manual focus on the Digital Sales Rep's advise, & glad i did. With just a little use you can focus it without any problems. Very fast and extremely sharp photos. This is my go to lens - my main prime.

I bought it mainly to use with my film camera (F3) for available light shots which it works very well. Working with Ilford HP5+, I can photograph just about anything I can see. What I did not expect was that it also works reasonably well on a D90. I was able to focus well using the horrible in focus aid on the D90 with some practice. I also found that it makes a nice portrait lens - an unexpected pleasant surprise. It's shallow DOF wide open makes it effective for this application. For this, however, the split prism screen on my F3 is essential, I could not do this consistently with the D90. When stopped down for outdoor shot, it seems to produce a better looking photo then its f1.4 sibling.

Looking for an in-between lens for portraits & landscape. This lens is the cat's meow. So fast, great - soft results wide open. I am so impressed with the operation & results it is my go to lens. Believe me you do not need auto focus. With a little practice you will master the focus ring in no time.

I used to own this lens for 15 years. Then this year I lost it in the louisiana swamp! I was so happy to see they were still making it!

The incredible depth shallow depth of field this lense gives you lets you create pretty unique photos.

Should be a part of any nikon's photo bag....

I don't leave home without it.

i use this as my main lens on the camera that is basically attached to my body at all times.
needless to say it sees much damage...

but seems to be holding up great.

and boy is it crazy to shoot with this thing in low light.

it is no autofocus... but it´s very nice and easy
to focus with.

with f/1.2....a real joy to loosen it from the camera and see the huge opening.

i bought this lens for my 7D DSLR video kit - Its awesome - Cant wait to use it more - love the manual smooth focus. It is like having night vision. Sharp. It's a beast! I have a f/1.8 version which has blown me away in the past - and the f/1.4 50mm that I have had for 15 years, but this f/1.2 is my go-to prime. It is so incredibly sharp once stopped down to f/2.8 and beyond. It throws backgrounds out of focus beautifully and very good even at the fastest speeds. get it! -

Use it on my GH1 with adapter shooting video. On my camera all the time.

More film like than any lens I have come across. Worth every cent, pretty much every thing all the photographers above state work for video.

Downside its a 100mm FOV for the GH1/2 sensor.
