The Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is the first true macro lens of their EF-S series, made specifically for "APS-C" format Canon SLR cameras such as all cameras in the EOS Digital Rebel series, 20D/30D/40D/50D/60D and 7D.
This dynamic, compact, fast-focusing lens provides dramatic detail that goes beyond the human eye. Having an effective 35mm equivalent focal length of ~96mm, it produces 1:1 magnification for extremely detailed close-up images. It is also a very good portrait lens. Autofocusing is achieved with Canon's very best ring-type USM motor, which is fast and silent and allows you to manually override the focus at any time without needing to switch the camera's settings. The field of focus is flat, important in macro work, and the aperture diaphragm is circular to allow more natural background highlights.
Designed for digital photography, the EF-S 60mm Macro has specially shaped lens elements and inner focusing, with a floating element lens design to give good results in images taken at distances beyond the macro realm. It also has Canon's Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare from reflections off digital sensors. An optional lens hood (ET-67B) further reduces the incidence of flare.

I bought this lens after much research in other reviews for this Canon lens within B & H, as well as in other camera tech review sites. Love it! Although many people describe it for use with macro images, you will see that some people describe it for portraits. I find that shooting candid portraits in any sort of light is very easy with this lens. The sweet spot of f/2.8 makes a great difference and the quality is such that I can crop out just a tiny corner of a full frame and still get a very large image with great resolution. This is what other folks have referred to in the way the 60 mm lens has great depth.
Too bad we can't include a link to a photo online, for one look at one of the candid portraits of my grand-daughter and a reader would instantly see the quality. But, please do consider this lens to be an all-around general lens. It does great outdoors, for sunsets and skyscapes, and city snaps too. It fights with my Canon 55-250 mm lens for prime seating on the Canon 40D when I cart it about with my gear.

So I wanted a Macro Lens for my Canon 60D. The EF 100 Macro seemed like a good choice, but 160mm (considering the 1.6X crop factor) seemed too much. I was right (for my needs). The 60mm gives me good room to work AND surprisingly has a FANTASTIC bokeh for portraits. Beautifully shaped round highlights makes almost any portrait a masterpiece! The fast aperture gives you room to work with low ISO and adequate shutter speed. The downside of this great piece of glass is the slow autofocus (which one could expect given the greater range of focus).

I currently am using this lens to photograph items to sell on the internet. It is truely genius.
The built in flash on my Canon Rebel XS is all the lighting I need. I was pleased that it had the very easy to read distance scale built right into the lense, very helpfull. I will be doing alot of outdoor photography next summer with this lense. i'm very excited about it.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
This lens is just great at taking close-ups and portraits. Bokeh (background blur) is great. Does not have image stabilization, but doing close-ups one should use a tripod anyway. Construction is ok.. considering the price but I'm satisfied with the results from the lens. Some hunting when autofocusing. Would buy again.

Couldn't wait to get it. Got it, then used it the minute the postman dropped it off. I love to take photos of miniatures. Surprised by the weight of the lens, but love it none-the-less.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and am impressed. This lens is very sharp and is reasonably fast. Image quality is great. Chromatic aberration is almost nonexistent with this lens even in very high contrast scenes (snowy mountain in direct sunlight contrasted by shade from large trees).
Autofocus is fast and accurate in most conditions with the exception of low light scenes - which I expected.
One thing I don't like is that the build quality feels inferior to my other primes (EF 85mm f/1.8 USM & EF 28mm f/1.8 USM).
However, it is a very compact, lightweight lens which makes it easy to carry.
I bought this lens because I wanted a lens for some occasional macro photos on some nature hikes. I was also considering the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (as well as the L version).
This macro lens is perfect for me because I am not so interested in macro that I could justify getting the more expensive, bulkier lenses. I need to save the space in my camera bag for my other lenses that get used more.
If macro photography is your primary interest and can afford it, you are better off with the 100mm or 100mm L or the 180mm L Canon makes - all of which will allow more working distance and more diffused background blur.
If you only need macro sometimes and like to pack as little weight as possible, this lens is a great choice.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
This is no doubt an extremely great lens, especially for the price. I, obviously, use it for close-up shots, but as well as some long distance shots. A few great things about this lens are that it's extremely light & compact, and that is has an incredible range of focus. You can focus on things that are as little as 1 or 2 inches away from the lens. Also, not only for the price, but just in general, the build quality is excellent. There is nothing that feels cheap at all, and the lens focuses extremely smoothly.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
Love this lens! I use it all the time as a nice walk around lens for getting close-ups and portraits. It has 1:1 macro as well as great glass for portraits. I opted for this lens instead of the heavier 100mm or the "nifty fifty" since it offers more versatility. You have to get in closer to your subject than the 100mm and it doesn't work as well in low light as the nifty fifty, but its a great lens if you want to just get one both portraits and macro that still has excellent sharpness and beautiful bokeh. Its lightweight too so its a great lens to take hiking or traveling.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
I am very pleased with this purchase. The price was reasonable for what feels and performs like an S series "pro" lens. Although at 60mm it is not the most friendly macro (a 100mm would give more "headroom"). At 1:1 ratio with an APS sensor, the Rebel T3i provide stunningly sharp close-ups and serves dual purpose as a low-light medium portrait with fair bokeh backgroung blur. Working within my limited hobby budget, this was excellent value for the money and represents light-years departure from the build quality compared to the terrible 18-55 IS II "kit lens". If the lighting is good, focusing is rapid, silent and bang on target, however with close-ups in low light, there is too much hunting and searching but is easily remedied by going into manual focus and using a rack+pinion focusing device. Too bad it doessn't have a range lock feature as seen on some longer macros. Nice feel, weight, and no problem using a polarizing filter as the front filter mount stays in place during focusing.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:
I am giving this 4 stars only because I've only had the lens less than a month and have not had a chance to fully explore its potential. I am a beginner photographer and wanted to experiment with macro photography without making a huge investment. This lens fits the bill. I've got a Rebel XS so the 60mm is actually 96mm. I can use that for general shots and then use the macro without changing lenses. As I imagine with most macros, it's better to manually focus to get the image exactly the way you want rather than rely on auto focus. So far the lens does not seem too heavy to hand hold but more practice and more time will tell. B&H had the best price on this lens and with free shipping, it was a great deal.

So far I have only been able to use it around the house on some of the wifes plants, It's light, and easy to use. I didn't give it a 5 star rating because I didn't feel I was able to get quit as close to subject, and when they give you a minimum focus distance of 7.8" (20cm), I find I'm not able to get much closer than 10" My next Macro Lens will be the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens

I can take all the macro shots with this lens that I want. It is a small enough lens that I can put it in my pocket. It is easy to use and has a great quality. I did alot of research on macro lens before I decided on this one and I am glad with my decision. I would recommend this lens and B & H Photography to all my friends.
