The Sony LMD-212S is a flat panel LCD monitor that uses a 21.2", 4:3 aspect panel. Video signals are accessed by a full-featured control interface box, the MEU-MX2, that houses the video connections, option slots and power supply. Only the display panel and tally light is housed in the monitor making it very space efficient and light-weight. It can be mounted on a wall or placed on the desktop with an optional stand. The monitor is NTSC/PAL systems compatible for Standard Definition video and it can also display HDTV formats including 1080/24-frame video.
Multi-Format Engine Unit
One key feature of the LUMA Series flat panel production monitors is the separate video circuitry box that is remote from the screen. This box is called the MEU-WX2 and it holds all the video parameter setup circuits, the NTSC/PAL/HDTV compatibility, the input and output connectors and it has the empty slots for optional video connector boards.
NTSC and HDTV Video Formats
In addition to standard NTSC and PAL system video the LMD-212S supports several HDTV standards. Sony is famous for creating the 1080/24-frame HDCAM format and the monitor can faithfully display this video. Additionally 1080i/30 frame, 720p, 480i and 480p standards play on the screen the way they were meant to be seen. Audio can also be input through this display.
Production Quality Color Processing
The LMD-212S can be used as a full-fledged production monitor in studio or in a production vehicle, actually anywhere high image quality and space savings are important. All the LUMA monitors use a sophisticated X-Algorithm process to defeat noise normally evident in fast motion video. An I/P conversion process keeps colors true when the interlaced signal is converted to a progressive scan.
Professional Set-Up Features
Just because the LMD-212S is flat and lightweight doesn't mean a video production or edit system has to give up faithful color representation. With the controls normally found on production CRT displays multiple monitors can be tweaked to output matched colors. Blue-Gun, Black and White, Contrast, Chroma, Brightness, Phase and Overscan can all be custom set on the outboard MEU-WX2 Multi-Format Engine Unit.
