The Sigma 180mm f/3.5 EX DG APO Macro IF HSM lens is a high performance telemacro lens that can focus from infinity to full 1:1 lifesize reproduction without accessories.
Convenient for photographing subjects, which are not easily approached, the 180mm f/3.5 Macro features apochromatic design, two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, and a floating inner focus (FIF) system. A focus limiter switch aids in faster AF by restricting the movement of the focusing mechanism to a smaller portion of its enormous range. Usable with Sigma's 1.4X EX teleconverter as a 252mm f/4.9 lens providing AF function from infinity to about 47" or with the 2X EX teleconverter as a 360mm f/7 lens in manual focus.
This lens is designed as a high-quality macro lens, good for film or digital SLR cameras. The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

I would like to start by mentioning that Sigma 180mm Macro gives you the best value for your money in the Macro Lens category. This argument can be supported by mentioning that this lens gives a great working distance as compared to most of the macro lenses in its respective price range-thanks to the minimum focussing distance of 46 centimeters it still has a much better working distance than shorter lenses. The sharpness of the lens is superb and the subjects display real presence. The Sigma 180 Macro has superb image quality. The sharpness is excellent between f/5.6 and f/16; at f/3.5 it is a little softer, but still usable. The 1:1 magnification of the lens makes it very easy to get life size magnification of the subject. Being a DG lens, the external built of the lens is very strong and handy, though it is definitely a little heavy. The rough coating of the lens gives it a great look- extremely robust, the entire lens barrel is made of metal and overall the lens is solid as a rock.
The Focus Limiter switch can choose between 0.46-0.61 meters, 0.61-infinity and 0.46-infinity. This switch allows reduce the focus range and allows a faster AF.
The tripod collar is one of the things that make me love this lens; when the lens is mounted on the tripod, it allows to switch from horizontal framing to vertical without moving the tripod head (you just have to loosen the knob and to rotate the camera).
The only two things about the lens that did not make me really happy are its slow auto-focus (which is quiet common in most of the macro lenses), and the lack of Image stabilization feature on the lens.
All in all, this is a great lens as compared to other macro lenses, specifically with its direct competitor Canon 180mm Macro, as it is much cheaper than the Canon version and delivers all the same great features as Canon or any other competitive lens can. In one sentence- the best value for your money.

I tested this lens beside a Canon 180mm macro, and found this lens to be very sharp. What I did observe, though, was that on aperture priority, the camera body would choose a 2/3rd to 1 stop slower shutter speed which over-exposed shots. It may be that Canon bodies do this with non-Canon lenses as this is the second non-Canon product that did this for me. I want to be able to changes lenses without needing to remember changing exposure compensation, so regretfully needed to return the lens.

I use this lens with my 7d and couldn't be happier. the build is excellent and the IQ is unmatched. All of my other lenses are Canon L's and this is certainly just as nice. Can't beat it for half the price of the Canon 180.

I had this lens for about 2 weeks now and it has been fabulous. Most people don't like EX finish, but i kinda like it. Image quality wise, i tested with Canon 180mm L lens, and Sigma was pretty much identical to Canon. So for the price of [$], this lens is highly recommended.

I found the bokeh to be more pleasing than the Canon 180mm macro. Super sharp even when using it with the Sigma 1.4x TC. Built like a tank! It's a little heavy so I use it with a monopod most of the time... but... you can shoot it hand-held as well. Just a great lens!
