Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 3 person full length shot, or a 4x8 size still-life setup.

In standard umbrella configuration the light quality is very nicely diffused and at 60" it's a great, large light source. In shoot through configuration, the light has nearly a soft-box quality. In both cases, it is large enough to serve as key or fill light for full length portraits of couples. Surprising lightweight for the size due to fiberglass rods making it possible to hang on a medium height stand with a small mono light without feeling you need a sandbag to keep it from falling over. Easy to remove the black cover for converting to shoot through. The construction appears to be on par with other brands I own though it lacks any kind of strap to keep the umbrella well packed when folded down. This would be fine except that the plastic cover isn't durable enough to stand up to repeated use and travel. Overall, a very inexpensive way to get a large light source with this kind of flexible diffusion.

Giant and works well.
This is a great giant umbrella. Unfortunately it doesn't have a metal cap at the top so you have to be careful when throwing it around with other equipment.

used in a studio setting - it is just what I needed to disperse and make the light a bit softer....I find no problems with it

Perfectly sized to shoot a full length crop of one person as well as a group of people. Even works great for close ups! This brollies creates a big, semi soft, classic light with a little more edge than a white but not has hard as silver.

I use this product for portraits and it is just awesome. Its a huge light source and gives very nice spread of light. The only bad thing about it is that it is an umbrella and they don't like the wind i will say that this is the strongest umbrella i have ever used

Seems well constructed. Used with Alien Bees. Much softer light than my 45" umbrellas. Easier and faster to set up than my 5' Octobox.

Usually use a 42 or 45inch unbrella with a speedlite. Sometimes it's just not big enough. This size is still usable with a speedlite. Photoflex are nicer than the Westcott umbrella and seem better built. Maybe it's me, but I think they give off more light than a Wescott. Use this more for full body shots.

This is a great product. I use it in my studio and for on location stuff. It is pretty big which is nice. I use it with an Alien Bee light and an avenger stand and have gotten great results.

This is the 1 light modifier I would use if I could only have 1.
Its great for reflective light, great a shoot through, and you can close it down for some great effects as well.
The construction is pretty good too - the only negative, at this point and its relatively minor, is the hole the shoot through fabric has at the tip. Its a bit rough and probably could have had stitching or a better finishing for longevity - having said that though, great item.

Okay, there's not a lot to say about a umbrella. This one appears made well enough; it's big, which is nice. I would recommend, however, making sure that you have a sturdy light stand. On my lightstands (which I think are the "standard" size), my 40-inch umbrella works well. This 60-inch, however, tips the light stand; also, I wonder how sturdy is the part that actually supports the umbrella. Anyway, this isn't a criticism of the umbrella; it's just to say that you might need a more robust umbrella/light stand.

Purchased this 60" umbrella for full-length portraits of children and for close in family portraits and it excels for both. I use it with one to three Nikon SB-900 speedlights and am very satisfied with the versatility and portability this set-up provides.

I used two of these for a wedding shoot recently, and they were amazing! They are really huge and somewhat heavy though, so I wouldn't recommend using them in small spaces. They also require sandbags to keep from falling over (that's probably true of any umbrella over 40" though). The shaft also got really scratched when using two different types of umbrella brackets. But, the umbrella, itself, holds together really well.
I decided to purchase these instead of the Wescott 60-inch umbrellas, because these had way better reviews, and I'm very happy I went with Photoflex. If you're looking for some 60" umbrellas, I would definitely recommend this model.

Very portable and easy to setup. A large and lightweight cheap solution for light control in the studio and on location.
Really interesting solution for the price. I bought two and bring them with me on location instead of softboxes and got very nice results in many situations.
I would have paid a little more for a good carrying case/bag instead of the original plastic package which will probably be gone long before the umbrella itself. But I just use a softbox bag for all my umbrellas and put them in my stands bag.
I like the white fiberglass rods which are more durable than thin metal with the added benifit of not showing in reflexions on the subject.
Large enough for a three persons shot.
I'm not sure I would use it with a speedlight though. I'm using this mainly with 400-600ws strobes with apropriate stands. To me, it's a bit oversized for smaller strobes and the smaller stands I usually use to hold my speedlights/umbrellas on location would probably not stand any kind of wind but I never tried it anyway...

This product is good for lighting larger groups of people, like say a family of five or so. The light is fairly soft. It's pretty sturdy. Not sure I'll be taking it outside without someone to hold the lightstand...this thing is huge and I think it will catch the wind pretty easily.

I use this with a single AlienBees strobe to shoot studio dance photography and get fantastic results. 60" is a great size for both full body shots and closer portraits. The white satin is versatile enough that I can vary the intensity of the shadows by moving my subject up or down-stage.

The unbrella is great, and in general I'm very happy with it. I didn't realize how shiny or silver a "satin" finish on an umbrella is, but other than that it is exactly as expected.
