Impact Convertible Umbrella - White Satin with Removable Black Backing - 60"
This is an Impact 60" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person full-length portrait, or a 4x6 ft product setup.
- Backing may be removed half way, providing a unique combination of light bounced from different surfaces.

This is a great umbrella. I have used as a shoot-thru for portraits and bounced it with the cover for group shots at weddings. I tested this with my meter and a Canon 580EX. As a bounce at iso 400 at 1/60 you can shoot f-11. As a shoot-thru same settings I got f-8.
I wish the fabric attached a little better to thte frame.

I've used this umbrella on a handful of shoots, all outdoor. Of course using a weight or sandbag is recommended to prevent the umbrella from flying away. I was using it without securing it and it tipped over on grass. I was surprised that the rods had bent so easily, since I was only using it with a 580EXII & PW. I figured I could bend them back until I picked it up and half the umbrella had collapsed. The rods are held to the center column ring with a wire. Apparently the wire snapped with a little pressure. By the time I got home all the rods had come loose.
I was able to repair it by using guitar string and threading the rods and securing to the center column. I'm hoping that guitar string that is designed to be used under tension will hold up better than the wire provided. This product would get 5 stars if it used stronger materials. It's a great modifier and I love the way it softens light, if I didn't like it so much I would have bought the Wescott version. For now, I've save some money and extended the life of this umbrella.
I would not recommend this. However if you are a current owner and you experience the same situation, you can repair it and save yourself some money. Fix requires patience.

I bought these humungous brollies so that I could shoot a small group of people with fairly even light. They worked just fine. The shiny white inside, bounced at the people, gave great detail. The black is opaque enough to keep light from the camera.

Works well and provides a lot of flexibility with its removable black cover. The black cover leaves a LOT of black staining on the white fabric, and it was impossible to clean off, but it shouldn't effect the photographs. However it makes the umbrella look pretty ugly.

I do mostly location photography and especially love this as a shoot through when I need to light a whole environment. It is versatile...shoot through, reflective, collapse it down for a smaller light source, etc. The only thing is you better sand bag this sucker well and have backup umbrellas. The first time it goes down, it WILL break and you will be out [$] These umbrellas are basically cheap and disposable.

I use this for big diffusion with flash gear & continuous lighting. Does the job nicely. I really like the price and that I have the flexibility to use this as a shoot through as well as a bounce. So far seems to be holding up well. What I didn't like about it is the black cover seems to have bled slightly leaving some blackish discoloration on the white umbrella. Will this effect my light much? Probably not, but I still don't like it.

This does what it is suppose to do. It is a good cheap large light modifier. I wouldn't use it outdoors because I am not sure it will hold up in a stiff wind, but for quick set up and tear down it can't be beat.

I purchased two of these based on the recommendation of Zack Arias. For the money, they are excellent modifiers. The large size creates soft, soft lighting (when used as a shoot through); the quality of the build is good considering the low cost -- even if they do get blown away and damaged, the low cost makes it painless to replace.
