Canon EW-83J Lens Hood for Canon EF 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens
The Canon EW-83J Lens Hood, like all other Lens hoods, is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of The EW-83J Lens Hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Essential but not included with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. As expected, it is well matched with the lens and does an effective jog of controlling light entering the lens without intruding on the image at any zoom setting. It is even possible to (carefully) adjust a circular polarizer with the hood in place.

I definitely would not purchase a knock-off brand lens hood, but for the cost of my 17-55 2.8 IS lens, this should have been included. There aren't any moving parts, so no complaints as of yet. Great product, bu I don't think Canon is being hurt this bad by the economy that I should have to pay for it.

This lens hood does its job. The only downside or upside to it, as with any lens hood, is that it'll make you significantly more "high-profile." It's great for blocking bumps and frocking dust away (there's some velvet-y lining on the inside of the hard plastic hood), but the diameter is significantly (a subjective word used here) larger than that of diameter of the lens it's used on. Because of that, it's something to put away if you're shooting casually say for street or friend purposes when you're not on assignment. The lens hood also makes the lens feel unbalanced on a rebel body, but that's more of an issue with the rebel series bodies than anything else. The lens hood does scratch a little easily, but that seems to be a common plight with a lot of lens hoods with the same semi-matte finish.

I got this lens hood for my 17-40L to be used on my 7D and it works perfectly. So if you're looking for extra flair protection or just feel silly using that redicilous lens hood the 17-40L comes with, this is for you. Make sure you use it on a crop sensor camera.

The hood can be turned around and installed on the lens, protecting it while not adding much bulk. The lens cap fits securely when the hood is so installed. The lens cap is difficult to install when the hood is installed for taking photos, but this is common to all hoods I've used.

I originally had a knock off lens hood for my Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 lens but it would never stay on tightly. It looked okay but poor workmanship caused it to slip and part of the petal even showed up in some of my pictures. I bought this one and have never had a problem. The Canon brand hood is also more durable than those cheap knock offs. I will now always stick with Canon for my lens hoods.

If you spent money on 17-55 do not think twice. You must have this for few reaons.
1. Protect against bumps. I had few close calls just walking around with the lens. It saved a lot of scratches and dents.
2. makes lens look more impressive
3. last but not least - it should help with flare
