If your like me, and love to use off camera flash, these things are a life saver. I connect the female one to a 5" L bracket, and then the male end into one of my flash bases. Hook both into my umbrella holder, and I'm good to go. Being that I like to move my lights a lot, I bought a few sets of these.

This product was exactly what I needed to attach my manfrotto monopod to my lastolite ezybox for off camera flash lighting.

It's definitely handy to have a couple of these lying around, as they can be used with lots of different photo accessories. I often use it to mount a small object to a stand.

These adapters work, which is about all that can (should) be expected. They were well (appropriately) priced, unlike some others with a frightening price tag.

I bought this to replace one of the two male adapters I lost off my Smith-Victor 2-umbrella kit. Unfortunately, the shoulder-to-shoulder measurement of the new adapter is 1.25" instead of the original 1.00", rendering it useless in the vertical holders of my light mounts without modification (horizontal is fine). The stud hits the bottom inside of the light mount before the adapter is fully inserted; perhaps this is a unique problem with my now-5-year-old S-V light mounts (a design with an internal clearance hole would have solved the problem). Luckily I didn't need the 3/8" stud side of the male adapter, so I cut it off with my Dremel tool - problem solved!
--Other comments: My adapters do not have the thread problems others reported. As to the material and color; even though the package says brass, only the female adapter is non-magnetic, leading me to believe it is brass as advertised. The male is magnetic, so it is probably steel. Both are silver in color. I would have given them 5 stars had I not had to cut off the stud.

I purchased these to add flexibility to our Apollo Speedlight Softbox. Now, not only can I set the softbox on a light stand, but by using these adapters, I can stick it on a standard monopod and move it as my model moves. This is a MUST HAVE in every photographer's bag.

I use these adapters in order to mount studio strobes / lighting accessories to c-stands. The adapters that I received do look different from the picture (silver instead of gold, which I think is a plus), and they function exactly the same. I've read other reviews on these adapters that talk about poor machining quality on the metal, but the ones that I received were perfect.

1/4 Threads are cut wrong and wont work without some time consuming filing and even still may damage your female thread.

I have attached each half of this product to a simple spring clamp. One by a bolt and the other by a hex nut, creating two functional baby stud clamps. They are very useful for attaching small light fixtures, that have 5/8 adapters, to a variety of structures.
You may also use this to add a 5/8 stud to cheap tripods for simple light stands uses.

Very dissapointed in the quality. Actually had to take a file and smooth the threads a little so they would screw into the light bases.

Every working photographer with a light stand (or 6) needs a pocket full of these Smith-Victor Brass Adapters (1/4 and 3/8 Female).
Highly recommended.
