I'm used to lugging around a DSLR and have been shopping for a 'compact' for a long time. I did my research and was concerned about the constant complaints of too much noise and how horrible the Venus engine is at rendering. I decided to take the plunge anyways and have been nothing but impressed with this camera. If you read the manual and do a little research there are more than enough manual adjustments that can be made to compensate for just about anything. The LX3 has recently been announced and this is what I was originally waiting for but am glad I did not. While there are several new functions that LX2 users have been asking for, it seems as if Panasonic has taken a stepbackwards in some key areas; look up the LX3 and you will realize what I mean.
First of all, the build of this camera is second to none. It is obvious why Leica has chosen Panasonic to partner with. The camera has an impressive heft to it, not one of those misleading plasticky feels.
When it comes to performance I am constantly amazed at what this camera IS able to do. For the size and price you get much more out of this camera than you would out of similar offerings. Not a day goes by that I do not come up with a shot that I thought would have been impossible with a semi-compact camera.
Why did I not give this camera 5 stars?
1. Offset tripod mount is annoying
2. Menu is not that intuitive. I can never hand the camera to someone and just say, 'take a picture.' Every time I have to spend a couple of minutes explaining why they shouldn't use the auto setting, what ISO to use, etc. (Don't get me wrong, this is also a good thing, it means that no one but me ever touches the camera!) I don't really mind too much as this gives me the opportunity to expose someone else to what camera's have the ability to do and this is probabaly true about most professional cameras.
3. There is no mount to screw on filters. I purchased an adapter to be able to fit 52mm filters and I highly recommend it. There is somewhat of a cult following for this little camera and you will be surprised at what the addition of a $30.00 adapter will allow you to add to the camera.

I'm giving this camera 3 stars becasue it's not as user friendly as Canon's SD series camera I've come to love and admire.Lumix DMC-LX2 is the same as the Leica D-Lux, except it's hundreds of dollars less and has an additional finger catch on the front. If you're a Canon SD### user, or use a P&S from Nikon, Olympus, Sony... the Lumix is nothing like those. It requires infinetly more setup in order to react like a P&S. You must adjust the metering and AF to their most basic levels in order for the camera to adjust in a reasonable ammount of time. Otherwise, it spends no less than 10 seconds adjusting and whatnot. Don't be fooled by "manual focus" either. You can set it to this mode, but there's no focus ring. You have to toggle a little thumb stick up and down to incramentaly change the focus. Also, most P&S camera bags won't fit this camera becuase the lens sticks out farther than most other small cameras. The lens cap is annoying for those used to a self-closing lens cover. The lens doesn't retract all the way into the camera, so sliding it into your pocket is cumbersome. The Camera is beautiful in its off position, but once it's on and the lens extends, it loses some of its charm. All of that said, the images are spectacular. The Leica lens is worth all the hastle. The video is MONEY-- 30fps, full SD resolution. I used some shots I took from a helo in my tv story yesterday and they integrated seamlessly with the video I shot on a $5000 JVD camera. But if you're looking for a camera that takes good pictures and you can slide it in your pocket when you're out and about, this Lumix is not it. Buy the Canon SD products for that. They are the best vacation camera I've ever used. The Canon SD1000 takes awsome pictures, shoots nice video, fits easily in a pocket, has a self-covering, flush-closed lens, and is $150 or less. The Lumix is twice as much, takes money pics and vid, but is complicated and cumbersome to use. I would not buy this camera again simply because I want a camera I can slip in a jeans pocket and shoot on the hike/at the bar/on the beach/on the bike/at the party... You might as well have an SLR if you're going to have the Lumix. If you do get this camera, buy a bag for it, but get the next size up from whatever it says will fit the LX2 because the lens fills the exta room you'd normally use to store an extra battery and SD card. Also, but an extra battery because the giant, beautiful LCD screen drinks up juice.skip the screen protectors becasue the LCD is virtually scratch proof. I've been taking my Lumix out into Iraq with me just tucked into an ammo pouch and it still looks brand new (except for the dust).

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Digital Camera (Black):
I needed a camera that I could take along for vacations; the portability factor was very important, but I also wanted something that had a bit more than the regular point-and-click business. I was recommended the LX2 by a few professional photographer friends of mine. I did look around for others, notably the Canon G7-G9 series, but at the end, in terms of weight, portability and the Leica lens, I shelled out for this one. And I haven't regretted it. It's got a lot of stuff that I figured out -- manual focus, shutter and exposure adjustments, variable aspect ratios et al. I still haven't explored it fully, so I guess there's a whole world out there for me.
Some of the pictures might be a bit grainy though, especially with the digital zoom kicking in now and then, and the anti-shake system isn't the best.

I am using this camera daily, I carry it around in my bag everywhere I go. I think this is certainly one of the best point and shoot cameras. It is easy to control, small size, and the pictures are great. It has all the settings a person will need to capture photos for trips, portraits, or detailed photos and more.

Use it for happy snaps. Nice look and feel. Could use an optical view finder and the focus searches a lot. The 10mp occurs as a wide image that will be cropped on 90% of image devices. Battery life seems good and LCD is bright and clear. The camera feels robust.

I am a amateur photographer and use it for everyday pictures.
The camera works well even in indoors. It is fast and the flash recycling time is acceptable.
To improve the image quality, you should keep the ISO setting between 100 and 200. Higher than this will put too much noise in the picture.
The manual override of all settings is very useful, and not common in this camera size. I am very pleased with the results. The unique wide sensor is fantastic for landscape and for group shots. It also became very useful for displaying picture in the new LCD TVs. The Leica lens are much better that the lens found on other similar priced cams.
Definitely I can recommend this camera to friends.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Digital Camera (Black):
I have a range of Nikon DSLRs such as the D1x, D70s, D80, and the D200 and im debating which one to get next, the D3 or the D700. I guess you can say im a gearhead. Anyway, i love my nikons and they are great cameras but can be heavy, not too inconspicuous, and aren't always too convenient to carry around with you. Thats where the Lumix comes in, I have this baby wherever I go! I love this lil camera! Its like a dslr other than the fact you cant change lenses on it. The control you have with this camera is amazing and the picture quality is superb! I cant find one thing wrong with it.
I went to Assateague Island to photograph wild horses and took along the lumix and a couple of my nikons (oh and btw, im no slouch on lenses either, i brought a 70-200 2.8 vr, a 17-55 2.8, a 105 2.8 macro, and a 10.5 2.8 fisheye) and after all that was said and done, some of the pictures that were my favorites at the end of the day were from the lumix. It could have been that maybe i didnt do the right things with the nikons, but thats the thing, the lumix took gorgeous pics, effortlessly. Plus running across the sand to get the shot from a certain perspective is alot easier with the lumix than a whole all out set up. I wish there were away to post example pics on these reviews to show what im takling about. (maybe thats something you guys could add b&h? hint hint) Overall, i couldn't recommend this camera more than enough to a friend, his friend, and his friends mother hehe. You will not ever regret owning this masterpiece and the masterpieces it creates.

Overall, this is a great camera. If you're looking for something better than a point and shoot, but not ready to make the heavy investment in a Digital SLR, this is the camera to get. There are two downsides. One is that the lens protrudes so it doesn't fit to well in your pocket. This is not a bar hoppers camera, and I would strongly suggest purchasing a case. Secondly, the flash must be manually opened each time and does not automatically open and detect a lack of light. My first picture at night is always fully black because I forget this. Otherwise, the picture quality and usability of the camera is great. I still haven't even figured out how to do hlf the things this camera can.

I have been an amateur photographer for over twenty-five years and have been reluctant to give up my beloved Nikons. As slide processing has become more and more difficult to find and my friends pictures at the digital kiosk printer at the mall have looked better and better, I decided to take the plunge. Two years of research (okay I was really hesitant) has provided me with an excellent choice for a digital "point and shoot" camera. I settled on the Lumix for several reasons. 1) It had a large sensor at a reasonable price. 2) It has all the features of my SLR except the interchangability of lens. 3) It had a Leica lens.
I can use it as a point and shoot, I can use it as a manual exposure camera, and my wife can use it as a point and shoot.

One of the best cameras I ever had, no only for the price or the leica lens, the real advantage of this little camera is the possibility to take pictures in RAW format. Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Digital Camera (Black):
I shoot a lot. But let's face it. Lugging an oversized, overweight digital SLR around is just not practical. The DMC-LX2 gives many of the features found on the big SLR's, but in a palm sized package. I am particularly impressed by the Leica lens. It is incredibly sharp. In comparison to a huge fixed focal length hunk of glass on the SLR, it wins on sharpness. There has been a lot of talk about the excessive noise in higher ISO settings, but I found it to be acceptable. After having pushed 35 mm film for years to get a high ISO, I don't see a problem. I have had a little trouble with manually setting white balance, but the auto balance usually works well.

The LX2 to is very easy to use with intuitive interface. This is my first experience with a Panasonic camera after been using Sony before. I am very happy to be able to use most of the features without even looking at the manual. The manual is easy to understand too and of course reveal even more fun things to do.
Great to be able use manual settings although it takes a bit to get used to. Not to different from a SLR and again easy interface greatly help.
Proper lens cap really nice.
Great to be able to shoot "RAW" for photoshop enthusiasts.
As whole it's great camera which works as a point and shoot when you want it too and as a mini SLR when need be.
Make sure to by extra battery and a 4GB memory card. Lots of features and no optical view finder takes lots of battery! Big resolution and "RAW" takes memory space.
Very happy about the LX2

best little camera i ever bought. i had a canon point and shoot that was way outdated and was looking for a slr, but decided to stick with a point and shoot because i like just having my camera on me all the time. this is the best of both worlds. takes better pictures than i could have ever imagined. i orginally looked at the leica dlux3, but this was basically the same exact camera without the trendy red dot and no photoshop and cost [$] less.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 Digital Camera (Black):
From other people's comments online I deduced that this camera is the same as the one that has the Leica logo, the delux-3 or something like that. Anyway, I could not be happier with this camera, it is small, with a metal body, so it feels solid and the lens is glass and beautiful. I did my research on this one and it is remarkable that you can get the same camera as the Leica for hundreds less, it does manual mode and you can also shoot in the raw. This is a wonderful little gem, a real diamond in the rough. Is it possible to fall in love with a great little camera, it is the frugal photographers way of owning a Leica, Albeit, made by Panasonic- who I believe makes the D-Lux for Leica- go figure-anyway Thank's BH and Panasonic for a great small camera.
