First off this isn't a "standard lens", it's unlike any 50mm lens currently in production. The ef 50mm f/1.2L is a specialty lens.
I know, your asking "How can a 50mm be a specialty lens"? To answer the question you have to understand exposure. Actually, you have to be a "master" of exposure. When you set this baby to f/1.2 it creates the most creative DOF you can imagine. It also creates the perect creamy "bokeh". No Zeiss or Leica lens can coe close.
The problem is many people buy this lens and don't understand that it's designed for creative compositions when used wide open. The DOF is so shallow, that everything but the area in focus will immediately begin to "blurr", or get soft. If you look at examples from the guys who love this lens - you see they are "masters" of creative DOF compositions. The "guys" who hate this lens, Shoot it wide open, and can't figure out why most of the photo is soft. People say it's soft in the corners, wide open. True, but that's because the DOF is "Razor" thin.
If you back it down to f/2, it will preform as good as any other 50mm - better even. But if that's what you looking for, than buy a cheaper 50mm. Like the ef 50mm f/1.4. BTW, the f/1.2 still outpreforms the 1.4 when stopped down - beter Bokeh is better bokeh. And don't listen to the guys who say the sigma 50mm f/1.4 produces "the same bokeh". No where near it.
This is a perfect lens, if you know how to use it, and trully understand exposure. Do you want to add a creative element to your work, become a "bokeh" master, or take unique Wedding/portrait photos? Then look no further. But be prepared to to practice and think outside the "Box".
I don't mean to be rude. But If you just set you DSLR to "P". or a pre set, then don't waste your money. Because your never understand this lens, or how to get the most from it

A Necessary evil
I shoot a wide variety of subject matter for my work and, because I exclusively use full frame Canon bodies and always try to use prime lenses, a 50mm is almost mandatory.

I shoot a wide variety of subject matter for my work and, because I exclusively use full frame Canon bodies and always try to use prime lenses, a 50mm is almost mandatory.
I have owned the EF 50mm f1.4 for years and it is a really good lens. Unfortunately, it is not a truely great one as it flares, focuses erratically and suffers from chromatic aberration, amongst other things.
I assumed the 50mm f1.2L would have to be much better because it is much heavier, many times the price and only a third of a stop faster. I was wrong. For examle, compared to my Mk. I 85mm f1.2, (which it is in the same "family" as) it is very poor. The later 50mm f1.2 should have built on this 20 year old design but it went backwards.
In some ways it is better than the EF 50mm f1.4. It has less flare and it is sharper to about f4 but it still has chromatic aberration, it is only acceptably sharp in the centre and it really suffers with back focussing and erratic focussing problems. I have paid Canon several times to try and get this lens to focus reliably, ( and had it done under warranty too). I have now given up and and accepted the best compromise after many hours of micro-adjustment with my camera bodies. I just shoot a lot of frames wherever possible. If I can get away with it I manually focus with live view or, even better, use my old Zeiss f1.4 plannar. In all I have 9 L series lenses and this has been the only truly troublesome one. My colleges are having similar problems with them. I would be o.k. about it if this didn't cost almost as much as the last car I could afford.
Australian photographers are rarely rich but, like other professionals, we get in trouble if we don't produce sharp photos. If you need the best compromise to do your job and they pay you well enough, this might be it but, otherwise, get the 50mm f1.4. It is a fraction of the price and, in in many ways it is the better lens. Now, why did I sell mine? . . . Better get another one.

Do not listen to other people! Try things for yourself! The lens is awesome simply. The colors, contrast, construction, detail are just beautiful. It isn't perfect. It could be as sharp as the 85L wide open but it makes up in other areas. I love it and I know I will keep it and use it for a long long time.

Purchased this lens for portraits/weddings, the bokeh is beautiful, shot even basketball with that yesterday and the subject really pops outBut today when I was just having fun outside taking pictures of mom with little brother, the chromatic aberration is EXTREME!Also the autofocus could have been better for the price^That's why I gave 4, would give 4.5 if I could, but not 5, for 5 it must be perfect.BEAST LensWhen I mounted it on my DSLR body, only comparison that came on my mind was, that in my hand the lens feel just like[*], fits just perfectly and feels good!

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
I currently own the 35L, which is still my favorite lens. I needed a prime lens in a normal focal length for a photo shoot, and the 50L fit the bill. I knew it was not going to be as fast as my 35L in autofocusing but I also heard that the color rendering and image quality was great. I also heard that the 1.2 aperture would be challenging, and it is. But, once I got the hang of playing with the 1.2, the lens worked well for me.
PROS:
- Excellent image quality, color rendering.
- Solid build quality - SO MUCH BETTER than my 50mm f/1.4.
- Narrow depth of field produces images that 'pop'!
- Bokeh? Can you say, 'bokehlicious'? Like butter and gooey cheese.
- Sharp at f/1.2 and even all the way up to f/4. Haven't gone beyond it.
- It's a pro photographer's dream!
CONS:
- Slow autofocus.
- Price - costly piece of glass.
- Hunts a little in low light situations.
Get this lens if you can afford it. After my 35L, it's the next best lens in my bag.

Portraits, DSLR Video for a short depth of field sweet Bokeh!!
Lighter than my 85 f1.2L lens but just as fast & easier to frame in Video Mode on the 5D MkII.

The first 50L I received was a dud, would not focus properly unless I used the outer focus points on my 5D mark II. I went to a local store and tested all 50Ls they had in stock. All were perfect so I walked out with one. Moral of the story is - don't get discouraged if you get one that does not focus properly, keep searching, they are out there and are well worth it. I love everything about this lens - color, contrast, sharpness, extremely useful focal length, indestructible construction, feel, look. It is expensive but it is awesome and my favorite already. Just get it!

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens is great for portraits. With the f1.2 it makes it easier to shoot low light portraits without flash, and the bokeh making the pictures silky smooth. Although the auto focus is very fast, the camera sometimes has a hard time taking a shot due to constant adjustment of the focus. The lens is pretty heavy, but it is the price of the large glass that you are using and it is well worth it.
This lens is great for any photographer, and is probably the most used lens.

Comments about Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Autofocus Lens:
I am a wedding photographer. One of my second shooters has this lens, and the shots she creates with it are stunning. The bokeh is to die for. So, naturally, I had to have one for myself!
I previously owned the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 and loved it for the clarity and nice bokeh as well, but this lens blows it out of the water. I sold the 85 1.8 the moment I placed the order for this 50 1.2.
I did have some concern after reading some reviews about backfocusing issues. However, as a member of CPS, I got a loaner 50 1.2 to play with for 10 days and, after doing a minor microfocusing calibration with my Canon 5D Mark II, it was spot on. The brand new one I ordered from B&H required no microfocus calibration and was spot on with my 5D Mark II out of the box. I just used it on a wedding this past Saturday and the shots are SO crisp and clear and the bokeh is amazing.
This lens is not overly heavy, but not what I'd consider lightweight either. It is rugged and built for pro use.
I have only PROs and no CONs on this lens.

I'm a sports/action photographer, love the depth of field really makes the subject pop. The focus is fast for the L series, but not as fast as my reliable EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. If this lens had an image stabilizer it would be perfection.

Although I have a 35mm 1.4, 24-70mm 2.8, and a 135mm 2.0,I can cover almost anything on this one lens. This lens is super fast, very sharp, and it's focal length sees in the same way I do. It also just feels great in my hands.

Excellent glass! While this lens is a little heavy, it does not create a burden, especially when you realize the potential product using this outstanding lens. Benchmark results with clear crisp object and a beautiful bokeh background. I read hundreds of remarks, viewed scores of reviews and after I received this prime lens, I still ask myself, "Why did you wait so long to make the jump?"

This is handsdown the best Christmas gift I have gotten in quite a while. This is the first lens that I have acquired that truly takes me from a point and shoot photographer to then next level. It is easy to use, produces excellent results for someone who has little knowledge of lenses. Again I am reviewing this lens as someone who has little knowledge of lenses but this one does exactly what I was looking for.
