I ordered the Onkyo A-9555 Integrated Digital Amplifier a few days ago, and it arrived on time in a factory-sealed box. In setting up the amp, I got the feeling of solid Japanese quality. The switches and controls have a good quality feel to them, no major complaints here. The remote control has lots of infrared power, so you can point the remote anywhere in the room (even behind you when the amp is in front) and the amp responds.I won't talk much about the controls and such, since Onkyo gives you lots of description on their website. Let's talk sound quality. For neophyte audiophiles, the basic first-impression difference between an average mass-market cheap amp and a high-end audiophile amp is in the midrange and highs. With a cheap amp, the first impression you get is that the midrange and highs are rolled off, indistinct and cloudy-sounding. With a high-end amp, the midrange and highs are loud, clear, sharp, and distinct. The uninitiated may even think that a low-end amp sounds more bassey and the high-end amp shrill, but if you listen closely you'll hear that the cheap amp sounds confused and soft (it only sounds more bassey because it lacks the higher frequencies), and the high-end amp sounds has powerfully strong and clear midrange and highs. So how does the Onkyo sound. In a nutshell, it truly merits an audiophile amp rating. On a scale of 1 to 10, 5 being a cheap mass market amp, 10 being a top of the line audiophile amp, and 7 being a typical budget audiophile amp, the Onkyo would rate something like an 8.5. In other words, it's better than any budget audiophile amp (including those touted as being better than others at twice the price) and possesses the essential sound characteristics of expensive amps. You get a clean, clear, well-defined sound, from bass to treble, just like an expensive amp. Compare this amp to an expensive amp and the difference isn't in essential character (they're about the same) but in degree of accuracy. The expensive amp will have more cleanliness and clarity, more mids, more highs, a deeper soundstage, etc. BUT NOT TERRIBLY MUCH MORE. For me, the improvement that an expensive amp would bring over the Onkyo isn't worth paying the extra money. For $500, you get the essential sound quality of an expensive amp, a sound so close, you won't care about the remaining sound quality difference because it would cost too much more to get. And that is where part of the joy in owning this fine product comes in. Spend several grand and get a superamp - you'll be happy to hear superb sound. Spend $500 and get so darn close to the same superb sound and you'll be even happier because you were a wise consumer and bought good value for money.
Expertise: I'm pretty picky about getting good value for money
Problems Encountered: One thing I don't like about this unit is that it lacks a balance control, even if it gets neutralized when you hit the Pure Direct button. One lingering concern is whether the class D amp will have a service life as long as a conventional amp, since the switching circuits cause more stress on the electronics than a simple analog amp. I'm just speculating.

I bought this to replace my old Onkyo M501, from the spec, they look similar, the overall impression is A-9555 has better clarity but the low frequency production is not as good as M501, for the overall experience I would prefer M501. since A-9555 is a integrated amp, better remote control etc, but I would rather have a better overall sound quality.

Comments about Onkyo A-9555 Integrated Digital Amplifier (Black):
This is a very clean and quiet amplifier. Strong bass, but a weak treble for the pure direct option. I can hear more detail in music and movie, but it does not have the bass delay vibration from a subwofer when watching a movie. In some songs, it is not that I can hear more sound, it is how the sound are play that make it seems more real.

This amp brings back memories of equipment that was basic and solid. Onkyo has done a wonderful job of mixing new technology with old simplicity. The pure direct function reminds me of tube amp sound. The inputs allow many component options from tape to cd to phono. Its sound is sweet and powerful with great separation.Thank you B&H for offering an outstanding amp at a great value.

I bought this to replace a 20 year old receiver from my dad. Vinyl, CDs, iPod all sound better than ever.
I may not be as "acoustically sensitive" as some, but for the price, I have no complaints.

I'd upgraded all my audio equipment last year except for the amp. We decided to stick with our 1970's Kenwood KA-3500. A classic and it worked w/ the new and wonderful turntable, tuner and cd player.
Well after reading a lot of reviews I finally bought the Onkyo amp and wasn't sure if it would make much of a difference. Right away, huge difference. Great sound. We LOVE it. It's wonderful and fills our rooms with much more accurate, richer sounds. I had no idea the amp would make such an impact!

This Onkyo A-9555 replaced a 10-year old Onkyo 9711. I am a long-standing Onkyo loyalist and the A-9555 has done nothing to tarnish my view of the firm's products. If you are interest in nothing but good clean and true old-school stereo sound without bells and whistles this is your amplifier. Handles turntables too! Excellent value.

Comments about Onkyo A-9555 Integrated Digital Amplifier (Black):
This class D PWM integrated amp is competitive with somevery elite gear - you will have to pay over $2K to getsomething that is significantly better. Due to the class Ddesign it is very efficient and runs cool too. The remotecontrol is also excellent.Onkyo has a classic on their hands with this model. You canbuild a very nice 2 ch system with this.
