The Epson P- series is great for portable storage and viewing in the field. While I predominantly use the device for photos, it handles and plays back video files quite well too. I have to agree with the previous review that the power cord could be truncated somehow. I'm usually forced to carry around a big Ziploc bag just for the cable.A note about Epson's service with these devices. When my P-2000 mysteriously died on me, I found Epson's service for these devices to be woefully inadequate. The people at their local service centers had never heard of nor seen such a device before, and were obviously more catered to deal with printers and scanners.Instead of offering some sort of data recovery service for their failed devices, Epson can only offer to repair the device outright with no thought given to the data... they'll simply wipe the drive clean. So your only hope for getting data off your busted Epson device is to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for professional data recovery... and that won't even get it fixed. So what does it mean? Generally the Epson devices seem to be reliable, but make sure you don't rely on them as a more permanent storage solution. Whenever I can bring my laptop out in the field, I make backups on the laptop and the Epson device.Given that Epson is carving a nitch for itself in the photography market with this nice series of storage devices, I hope they can find a way to ramp up the support side to better serve casual, semi-pro and pro photographers alike.
Expertise: Semi-Pro
Problems Encountered: Epson P-2000 model's hard drive randomly started bogging down after about 1.5 years of use. In less than a day, it failed completely, and the device failed to load even the start menu. Epson's lack of data recovery led to the need for a separate company's data recovery service (see details above).

I don't own a P-5000, but I looked at the P-3000 and P-5000 after my P-2000 let me down. These newer models are very similar in features, and limitations, to the P-2000, so I'm submitting this review. The best feature about these devices is the screen. It's beautiful, the graphics are classy, and it makes a good first impression. It certainly grabbed me when I first saw it.Beyond the screen, though, are some significant limitations. The operating system and various required files are apparently on the hard drive. While you are connected to your PC, the Epson unit will allow you to format the hard drive or delete files, but you may then find the unit is inoperable and Epson will not fix the unit under warranty. This is a risk exposure I've not seen on any other such device.Deleting content is a chore. Files and folders must be deleted one at a time, using 4 steps per item. After a one-month vacation, you'll spend half an hour clearing the unit of files you've transferred to your computer. You might be tempted to just erase them from the computer, but as described above, you may damage your unit. The battery charger is large and awkward to use. When traveling, the size and weight you must carry is significant. Even though the charger is large, it is only a trickle charger and several hours are needed to recharge a depleted battery.Epson says the unit will be damaged if it is operated from AC power with the battery missing. This means, among other things, that if your battery goes bad you won't be able to use AC power as an emergency backup.Epson places a a warning message on the screen if you connect to your computer while your unit is running on battery power. Presumably, dire things will happen if the battery dies under these circumstances. The P-2000 has a now well-known inability to work with some of the newest CF cards. This problem does not exist for the 3000 and 5000. Obviously, Epson has the capability to read the newer cards but decided not to issue firmware updates for the older models. I think this is a poor commitment to their existing customer base and I therefore do not trust them to keep the 3000 and 5000 current with changing technology. Epson seems to used planned obsolescence to boost sales. Finally, these things are expensive. B&H has many good alternatives available, and virtually all of them cost less than an equivalent Epson unit. I suggest you look at the others. I'm going to buy a HyperDrive.

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I am nothing but pleased with my purchase of the Epson P-5000 Multi-Media Storage viewer.
The primary purpose, for me, is increasing my picture storage capacity on longer excursions. Memory cards still add up in cost when you buy many. Also very important, though, is storing my photos on a less volitile media so that I won't lose them.
The Epson viewer lets me go way beyond that basic purpose and be able to review my pictures at night, or while traveling, on trips. I can see what my pictures look like, and zoom in to 8X to make sure the details are right. The histogram and EXIF information viewer add to the reviewing capabilty.
If there is a TV with a video connection available, I can share my pictures with several other people.
I can even rate the pictures while stored on the Epson viewer.
Finally, when it is time to transfer the pictures to my computer, it is a one-step fast operation.
I highly recommend getting the Epson Travel Pack for the viewer too, if only for the great case that lets you travel with it safely.
There isn't anything I do not like about it.

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I use the multimedia storage as extra memory/additional storage for photography when I am travelling. The 80Gb is superb and in stead of using ten 8Gb CF cards I can use the P-5000 when not carrying a laptop.
The display is great for reviewing photos and much better than what I have on my DSLR.
Downloading and uploading photos from the P-5000 is too slow. I am not sure of the speed of the hard drive, but the performance is much slower than what I had expected from this device. This goes both ways, both when I am backing up CF cards and also when I am transferring photos from th P-5000 to my computer.
Battery capacity is somewhat smaller than I had expected.
I have not used the viewer for video or audio. The sound quality of the P-5000 internal speakers is as expected. You do need headphones to enjoy sound and music.

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I was looking for a way to download images and to see them when I am traveling. This device meets and exceeds the expectation. The size means I can carry it in the camera bag and with 80g of memory I can down alot before I have to return home. The screen is a good size for playback and the menus are simple. Really a simple device that does just what it was advertized to do.

Great storage device. I use it to show customers their pictures rather than carry around a laptop. Wonderful screen and resolution. Cant recommend this product enough. I find to be a must have item. I put it in my purse and go. Putting music on it is a plus. I dont worry about having enough memory now.

use it for backing up files while at a wedding (peace-o-mind!). Works great . Takes about 10 minutes to DL a 4GB extreme IV. Battery could be better tho. I get about 6 cards downloaded before I lose the battery (without viewing). It shuts itself down after 10 minutes of non-use but the 10 min to download plus the 10 minutes while it waits to shutdown is 20 minutes on per card. After 6 cards the time adds up quick (2 hours on) and the battery dies. I leave it plugged in when I can and try to remember to shut off when not in use and that helps.

I have carried two Epson P-5000's with me all over North America and Asia. They have both worked perfectly for storage of my raw/NEF photo files. The controls are easy to use and the card download is rapid.I prefer not to pack a laptop for trips to remote locals, and the Epson is an ideal compact storage devise.
Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I got it about 3 months ago and haven't left it home once.Shooting sports, still life or portraits I just put my cardin and view the shots just to see if I really got it thistime. In other words it's another screen for me. I got backfrom New Zealand a few days ago and uploaded all the photo'sto my computer... I had 15000 shots RAW and JPEG. Thisdefiantly was a very smart buy. I even let my 16 year oldson use it for his yearbook. Everyone loves it and histeacher just ordered two. Hope this helps you make the right choice

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I've had my P-5000 for several months now, and I absolutely love it! I purchased it so that I could dump photos from my memory card while out shooting. I DO use it for that--it means I don't have to carry around spare memory cards--but I also copy all of my good photos (the ones I don't delete) to it after processing on the computer and use it like a digital photo album. With support for RAW images, as well as videos, I've got a year's worth of original image data, photos I've edited and converted to JPEG for upload to my online photo album, and a number of videos saved to my P-5000. And I've still only used half of the HD capacity!!! Since I live abroad, it's a great way to share pictures and videos with people at home whenever I visit. I ALWAYS have my P-5000 with me in case I want to show someone some pictures. It's rather a spendy little toy, but it's definitely one of my FAVORITE toys!!!

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I purchased my P2000 two years ago to back-up and view photos for a European trip. The P2000 performed brilliantly for the Nikon Coolpix 5400, Canon Powershot, Contax and Epson cameras. These cameras all produced images between 2 and 5 megapixels. When I purchased my Nikon D200 that produces a 10.2 megapixel image, the P2000 would not display the images. It complained that the Images are too large. These images were all jpgs, nothing fancy.

I purchased this for the ability to back up pictures andview them on a larger screen, rather than having to have alaptop to haul around. This is a wonderful device for that, and way compact in comparison! Very easy to use. If you wantto listen to music, I think you will have to use headphonesto hear it well. It has the ability to plug in headphones, but doesn't come with them. I agree with the last guy... theprice is a little high, but you pay it if you want it. Ihave no regrets and am happy I purchased it. The screen doesgive tremendous quality of viewing! So far, I am pleasedwith the purchase and woulddefinitely recommend it!

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I ve bought the P5000 over a year ago and cannot imagine myself photographing digitally. The machine is well made, easy-to-use and very necessary in the field or in the studio. In the studio, models love to see the results of previous shoots on a great quality screen and I use the Epson a lot to make suggestions in their posing during the shoot. In the field , it allows to limit the number of cards & cables you are carrying and the need for a laptop. the quality of the screen is such that you have to see it to believe it.
Problems Encountered: No problem whatsoever. I can only think of one flaw is that the charger is really cumbersome with its two cables. Come on Epson, it is called a portable charger. Make available a charger without cable that plugs directly into the wallI also recommend any buyer of this great item to buy an extra battery. well worth the expense

Comments about Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer:
I purchased this product about 6 months ago and it has exceeded my expectations in almost every way. I am a semi-pro that does weddings and portraits. To be able to show my customers their pictures almost immediately after the shoot is a great plus. I have also used it hooked to a TV for slide shows at weddings. I even took it to a concert one night, shot quite a few pictures of the bands and showed them their pictures after the concert. They were so blown away by my shots, helped by the quality of the viewer, that they had me take a group photo and invited me to their afterglow party. Talk about an icebreaker. The quality of the LCD is fantastic and construction quality is great. It's worth the extra money to purchase this model with 80 GB. I also use it as an MP3 and video player and it gets used constantly. A great purchase!
Problems Encountered: Battery life is about 4 hours. Extra battery is desirable.
Items I Recommend: Extra Epson d-11a battery, mini AV to 3 RCA cable
