Arca-Swiss Z1+ Flip Lock Overview

The Arca Swiss Monoball Z1+ Single Pan Flip Lock builds on the success and popularity of their B-series ball heads. Z-Series ball heads are just as elegant, and even more perfect. The size and weight of the ball heads have been significantly reduced. The ball and fastening are now assembled using a patented bayonet mount. Various accessories can thus be quickly mounted to adapt the tripod as required.

In addition to the proven, patented Arca-Swiss features, including aspherical ball heads, axial clamping and PMF (progressive motion related friction control), the Z-series also boasts new technical developments and optimized materials and coatings. The Z series can withstand an incredible 130 lb off-axis.

This model is the "sp" version, which features a single panning base. The Z1 head is also available as the "dp" version, with a double panning design.

Ever since their introduction over forty years ago, the Arca Swiss Monoballs have been at the forefront of quality and performance. Today, their unique shape (an ellipse rather than a sphere) is still what separates them from all others. With other ball heads, no matter how good the tension modulation, you invariably will need to increase the tension control as you move the load away from the center. This is because gravity has a greater effect on gear when not perfectly level.

The Arca Swiss Monoball eliminates the need to modulate the tension, because its elliptical nature corrects it by virtue of its own design. The load stays exactly where you tell it to once it's locked into position. A separate control is set to apply a constant minimum friction, which allows the photographer the peace of mind that comes with knowing that his gear will never move of its own volition. The heavier the equipment, the more the advantages of the Arca Swiss become evident.
The Flip-Lock quick release system offers double safety locking features, with instant flip-lock release of the clamp, for quick mounting and dismounting of cameras.
A tension adjustment thumb-dial is built into the indexed friction control knob.
Base diameter of 2.7" / 69mm, excluding knobs

I was a little hesitant to spend the money, but I am glad I did. It’s smooth and sturdy. Use it for my studio work a lot.

I've found this tripod head to function extremely well and found it capable of supporting heavy and imbalanced loads with ease. I especially like the double-locking action of the quick release, so that I can't accidentally drop my camera when adjusting the plate. The small dial on the tension knob also allows setting a minimum friction, which is another fantastic fantastic feature that prevents the ball head from falling over at slack tension. Super solid.

Hi I'm interest to buy Z1 sp for my Canon 5DMK3. Please recommend camera plate fit for it.Thanks

RRS & Kirk ( and possibly others ) make L plates so when going from landscape to portrait mode the camera is always over the center of the head & tripod is nicely balanced. You may need to decide on whether you are going to shoot with a grip or not when buying an L plate. Cheers Peter

The Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1, Mfr # 801103 has a regular knob to lock the plate in place. The other one, #801104 has a flip lock instead of a knob. Otherwise they are about the same.

question

Will this model work with RRS camera plates? I have heard this won't clamp tight enough.
Asked by: Bryce
I use this Arca Swiss ballhead with RRS camera plates and have never had a problem. There is a knurled ring to adjust the setting position of the clamp, and once adjusted correctly for the style of plates you are using, the quick-release mechanism works perfectly.

question

I have bought a Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 sp with Quick Release Flip-lock , Can i change the Quick Release from Flip-lock to Kirk QRC-3 Quick Release Clamp for Arca-Type Plates - 3 Base?As i am having problem adjusting the inter screw every time the plate changes. i.e. if i mount the Novoflex Castel-Q Focusing Rack - with Arca-Type Quick Release i have to adjust the screw so that it locks properly and after that when if i want to directly mount my camera which has a wimberley p-5, again i have to adjust it to lack properly.
Asked by: Sharad
There appears to be a screw at the top of the Monoball that allows you to remove the clamp, but, in my experience that has never been the easiest or cheapest way to modify your tripod head. I would suggest clamping another clamp to the head. such as the Benro PC1 Panning Base B&H # BEPC1 MFR # PC1. It will give you additional flexibility.
