A great choice for someone looking for an excellent quality DSLR, but does not have, or can justify the money for the really top notch PRO models Nikon sells. Have used this camera for several years and have nothing but praise for it. Very fast 5fps when needed, weather sealed, rugged, very good battery life (I sometimes forget and leave it on, in the bag, for several days and still plenty of battery life left). No complaints about picture quality but I've heard the D300 does better at high ISO's.
Only negatives I can think of: camera is a little on the heavy side; if you insist on light weight get a D40, D60, or D80.
Remote shutter release connection port has a very stupid round cover to unscrew "and lose" but I haven't lost mine yet.
Remember that pro's have used this as a back-up camera.
I bought the kit but soon after replaced the lens with a Nikon 18-200. This makes a great "walk-around" combination.

This is a camera that has a well defind history and it stands up to the raves. Very durable and solid. Could use better low light capabilities as the D300 and D700, but for the price you can't beat it. very reliable and easy to use and learn.

This digital SLR quickly became my favorite 35mm camera out of the many that I own, and not just because it is digital. It took me only about 20 minutes to get it up and running once I had charged the battery. The results have been very pleasing, particularly when I use a VR lens.The colors are true-to-life, and images are sharp. When I shoot black-and-white, the results are as good as with any of my conventional(film)cameras-something I had not believed possible, until I saw it with my own eyes. Also, since this is a Nikon, it is extremely rugged, and many Nikon lenses are compatible with it. I love this camera-so much that I bought a D300 to go along with it.

I have ownedd the D200 for almost 2 years and still love it. It is durable, accurate, and quick to start up and shoot. After a comparison with the newer D300 using the same lenses I could find no difference in RAW image quality. The CCD sensor and engine seems fully equal to the CMOS in all aspects I could see. I have a D80 for long-distance portability, but the D200 remains a most useful tool, and satisfying to work with.

This product is great. I have professional imaging experience in a scientific context, but I am an enthusiastic beginner with respect to recreational photography. This camera is sophisticated enough to satisfy my inner geek, but at the same time basic enough to get reasonable pictures if you just point and shoot! It is definitely a camera that you can grow with. The pictures will only get better as you learn to exploit the all the camera's capabilities.

I've been an active amateur photographer for about 25 years. I purchased a D50 about 2 years ago and last year upgraded to the D200. It's a great camera in all conditions. I shoot sports, nature, concerts, people, and landscapes. As a Nikon user, the camera functions are very familiar and easy to use.

Problems Encountered: The only problem I've encountered is a problem with a battery drain with a fully charged battery. The camera has been returned for repair.

I got my first 35mm camera in 1964. Over the years I did medium format Mamiya and Hasselblad for portraits and even a twin-lens reflex for weddings but always stuck with Minolta in 35mm format for everything else. I have watched the evolution of digital since the early 1990's and I do own some prosumer digital cameras, but always held back from buying something that would replace my film.Well that has ended! I am utterly amazed at the ease of use and incredible output my new Nikon D200 gives me. When stacked up against any film camera I have ever owned - this machine is head and shoulders over all of them.I pulled this camera out of the box, strapped it onto my remote and shot three hundred memory mates before I read the book. It is intuitive, powerful, simple to use and delivers totally professional results. Best change I ever made.

Nikon seems to be one step behind Canon for some reason. But a good reason I sit & wait. Cameras I used to own are the D70, D50, canon 10D. I now own the D2H, D200, canon 20D. I have the Canon because nikon being one step behind. Mainly with the lenses. I love the 70-300 DO IS USM for the canon, and was waiting for nikon to bring out a 70-300 VR at a reasonable size and price. Finally they have, and it's 2x cheaper than the canon. Not as quick all the time, but the optics are nicer. With that and the D200, they are finally leading canon again! I like how it handles and controls like the D2H. Like a smaller, cheaper version, but with higher pixels and features. I use my D2H as a backup, literally!

Since its introduction to the 35mm Nikon line, I have ownedand been very pleased with the solid F5 and a number ofNikon's TTL Auto Nikkor lens systems. The D-200, though notas well made as the F5, has many of the same features as thevenerable F5, handles well, and captures excellent detail inRAW format, highest resolution (doubtful that Nikon intendedthe comparison). My old D28 flash works well with the AF-S DX 18-135mm Nikkorlens that came with the D200 camera kit that I bought, butdoes not function very well w/ the TTL electronics of theD200 when older Auto Nikkors are mounted to the camera. Theautofocus and autoexposure capabilities of the D200 matewell with the older TTL Auto Nikkor lens systems. The MB-D200 w/ twin lithium cells is a critical add-on andone that I recommend. Plastic construction and high priceof the MB-D200 aside, the added weight and good design of thedual-battery accessory is beneficial for horizontal- andvertical-shot applications. The color engine of the D-200is remarkably good and the numerous camera features includean intervalometer, adjustable time release, excellent white-balance adjustments, good manual A and S priority capabilitiesand many other useful features. If the plastic MB-D200holds up, the D200 wins my vote as another winner from Nikon.
