The Sea & Sea YS-250PRO is designed for demanding professionals. The strobe is packed with features to meet the challenges of digital photography in the underwater environment. The strobe features a large circular arc tube that emits a powerful flash at guide number 32 (its value on land / ISO 100 / m) when power is set to full. The strobe provides incremental manual flash power adjustment in 12 steps for fine adjustment of light. It also works in TTL mode with the converter for the YS-250PRO.
The YS-250PRO is lightning fast: it recycles in one second. The high-capacity Ni-MH battery is designed exclusively for the strobe. It stores enough power when fully charged for 300 full flashes. The strobe also features a high-luminosity white LED target light in the center of the strobe. This shows precisely where the strobe is pointed. There is also a ready lamp and TTL lamp on each side of the strobe to indicate when the strobe is charged and when it is being controlled by the camera's TTL. An audible signal sounds when the ready lamp lights, so you can concentrate on your subject in the viewfinder and know precisely when the strobe is ready to fire again.
The YS-250PRO includes other sophisticated features such as two fiber-optic cable sockets and pre-flash cancellation that handles up to two pre-flashes from the camera. Slave mode allows the strobe to be used in cordless dual-strobe or multi-strobe photography. With all of these features the YS-250PRO is at home in the water both day and night. The strobe will help you create the best possible underwater images.

Comments about Sea & Sea YS-250PRO Strobe Head Only:
Used this model on a ten day dive trip to Fiji. Had to operate in manual mode (no TTL converter available) with a Sony A900 in a custom housing from BS Kinetics in Germany. No issues with the strobe's submerged weight since the housing was positively buoyant. I was able to swiftly adjust strobe power settings depending on conditions and subject. After a couple of dives adjusting power on the fly for the "gotcha-shots" became intuitive. The 12 power levels allowed for great flexibility in composing the shots, especially for macro work, on wildly varying color/textured animals. The flash went into "fail-safe" only once and required 24hrs to reset. This was on the eighth dive but once it cooled off was fine for the next 21 dives. The strobe wasn't left in the sun or fired on max power in excess of what the manual recommends. Seems like an isolated incident.

This is an amazing flash.Pros:super fast recycle timerechargeable batterysuper brightCons:big and heavy (almost 2X as big as the YS 110 which I came from)expensivenotes:I ordered the rechargeable batteries because [...] said they were not included. They are. As well as the battery chargers.I also used these flashes with the brand new sea & sea YS TTL converter which I got because my old converter did not work for the 250 strobes. The images I got with the new converter seemed under exposed at least 2 to 3 stops. I could boost the output but I recommend saving the $700 on the converter and going manual with the 2 into 1 sync cable.I was using this with a Canon 5D Mark II.

I'm using that strobe with my DX1G camera and sea army VII; and it works great, you can use the manual settings to control light levels point by point (optical cable can be set in 3 ways); the target leg light help me a lot to fix points, and into my night dives! It's heavy out of water, so I designed a neoprene bag (to put all my under water camera equipament) to avoid people to strike or drop it down when I'm diving in a bout.
