If you already own NP-F batteries, this unit is a great addition to a location or event video production package. An NP-F950 or 970 will operate this unit for hours. It runs cooler than quartz or HMI, and it's not too heavy or bulky to put on-board a camera. There are several ways to adjust the output and softness of the light, which makes it a very versatile portable light, especially for wide aspect ratio shooting. Also easy on the subject's eyes. A perfect compliment to my kit, check it out.

I ordered this LED light after shopping around but sent it back as soon as it was delivered. The light is much too big for the Sony V1U that it is marketed for and is quite heavy as well. It is in the specs - just make sure to be aware of that before ordering. Also, the build quality of the barn doors and lens filters felt good but the casing and shoe mount felt very cheap as if they would break (this has been a problem for other Sony lights in the past). The on-off switch also felt very cheap and delicate. The light performed fairly well at 50% or above power but anything under 50% did not produce any more light than a 10W tungsten bulb when tested in a mildly dark room. I did add a CTO gel to adjust to 3200k light as a test as well which helped the appearance but did block some of the light output.
Expertise: Event and Corporate Videographer, Editor
Problems Encountered: Be aware that this light is quite large and is hardly discrete for event videographers. Also be aware it will not work with the smallest L series battery that comes with most Sony cams including the V1U.
Items I Recommend: Sony V1U Cam - it works great

Comments about Sony HVL-LBP LED Light System:
Its one of the better LED lights, a little heavy on the camera. It needs a 3200 filter screen. I also purchased the Varizoom light and found it to be better all around and even cheaper.

This product is being used with my HDR-FX1. It does provide good light and the on-light diffusers do a good job. The unit is quite heavy to be used as an on-camera light.

Comments about Sony HVL-LBP LED Light System:
Could be smaller in size, power switch is not comfortable too small, no option to change light color. After you turn light "on" must wait till recognize battery - that’s make me nervous all the time specially if you event videographer and need light "just now". I considering to reassemble and take that battery "recognizer out" Sony have to think other way to sold there batteries..

This is my first on-camera light I have purchased. I used it for a wedding and it worked well. I love the dimmer and the controls on the light direction. I shot for about one hour with the light and the battery is still full. It also fits on the shoe of my smaller camcorder.

Comments about Sony HVL-LBP LED Light System:
I use this light system for filming weddings and it gives me a very good light source for that kind of job. I really like the true color it give me. The dimmer is great and the filter it has are very good help. If I would say something bad about it, it would be the size of it, is a little big but a very good light. It to bad it does not have filters to change the color temp. of the light but home made ones works well. It really does last about 5 hour with full dimmer on. finally I dont recommend anyone useing anything smaller than a Sony HVR-V1U to get this light because of the its sizes. I use a HVR-Z1U.
