My last camera was an S300 digital elph that I bought back in '01. It lasted over 6 years and, despite it's lack of mega pixels (2.1), it was still taking great photos in early '08. This is why I went back to Canon for the SD1000, which is just as impressive now as the S300 was then. I can only hope that it lasts me another 6 years.
This camera is very user friendly, it turns on quick, and has everything that I would ever need to take great pictures. There are so many digital cameras out there that have lots of bells and whistles, but do they all last 6 years? Maybe, but I know for sure that Canon makes cameras that last. If you're not the kind of person who HAS to have the latest and greatest in technology and buys a new camera everytime a higher mega pixel comes out, then you might want to go with another, cheaper brand (although this was well worth the price), but I like my things to last, so the Canon SD1000 it was.
I'm not sure why Canon hasn't put the other camera companies out of business yet, but if they keep making cameras like the SD1000, and for the reasonable price that they ask, I'll keep on buying them.

This is a great camera except for the lens. I previously owned Powershot S110 and S400's, both of which took perfect images; the SD1000 seems to have a lower visual quality. Even as low as 1600x1200, in good light, you get severe blurring and smudging in the corners - you can't see it in the viewfinder, but on a monitor, it's quite noticeable. I sent it back to Canon and they replaced the lens, but it didn't help. I looked at Canon's sample images and they show the same problems, but it's clear they've selected images that play down these defects. (High contrast or high-frequency detail in the corners will expose/exacerbate the problem.)
Other than that it's a perfect camera - really top notch. Love the interface, everything is zippy and easy. The 640x480 movies are beautiful (although they do eat up tons of memory). The battery on this thing lasts *forever*.
I'll admit, I thought maybe I just got a bad one - but after looking at Canon's sample images, I suspect they are all like this. But don't believe me, go look for yourself - just keep in mind that they've chosen images that downplay the problem (by about 60%, I'd estimate).

We purchased this unit awhile ago for our Rotary Child I.D. Program where we provide a free child I.D. Kit to parents; asking for no names or any other info (No big brother here) so far the product is fantastic. The image quality is great. Our only hope is that the unit will continue to perform for quite some time and we are able to replace it if needed with product compatible with the Selphy printer we purchased as a package.
Thank you,

I use it for everyday picture and for work (graphic design). It is enough of a camera for me. It is very light and small, the best part - no more juggling with AA batteries. The display screen could be a little bigger, but it's OK.

Fits in pocket. Great stabilizer on photo and video. It takes great video (as good or better than a comparably priced video camera). It takes progressive video (not interlaced) so you can determine if that's good or bad. It has a great macro function to allow closeup photos of text, flowers, eyes, etc. I added a $17 cover for it (black rubber). Battery lasts a long time. Put a two gig card on it and have an extra card and battery, and you could go out for several days (as long as you don't take too much video). Cards are so cheap now, so get several.
For what it is and does, I love it.

I bought this camera so I could have a small very easy to use camera with me wherever I go. Very compact, great screen, easy to use, and with a memory card upgrade (the camera only came with a 32mb card) I can store enough images from each outing. I highly recommend this camera for all but professional work.

Starts fast (first shot). How many times did I miss photos with my old point-and-shoot while waiting for it to boot up? The SD1000 is ready in about 1 second. It keeps up with quick snapshots after the first one too. The photos are sharp. It even has some manual features for when I have time to compose a technical shot. Oh, and an optical viewfinder - yes, very important.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph Digital Camera (Silver):
After having read numerous reviews of various sub-compact cameras, I always kept coming back to the Canon. For such a small camera, it does a great job. Indoors needs the flash to do your pictures justice in a dark room, otherwise much noise is present. Once you take a picture, press the Display button to keep the picture viewable for an extended period and also get picture info, including a histogram. This camera is extremely fast at start up and shot-to-shot. While in shot mode, you can customize the print button (I have mine set for white balance). I like having a slide switch for shot, movie, or playback. If just wanting to view pictures, slide the switch to playback and power on. The lens is not extended, as some cameras do. The viewfinder is poor, but it is good enough when needed in very bright outdoor lighting situations. However, if the display is hard to see in those situations, you can hold the Display button down for a second to brighten up the display. After the first charge of the battery, I did not get long battery life. Since the second charge, the battery seems to last longer. I use the lcd all the time and it is a large 2.5 one. The lcd does a great job of automatically gaining up in dark rooms. The lcd does leave fingerprints, but with a good lens cleaning cloth -- no problem. I knew going in that this camera does not have image stabilization, which will probably be put on the replacement Elph. The high ISO/auto high ISO is OK, but not a replacement technology for IS -- plus high ISO shows much grain. If you have a steady hand, even with the red hand shake icon showing, you can get a great shot with flash. The only picture problem I have had after taking over 100 pictures, is backlighting. My wife and I were inside a restaurant on the Gulf near Panama City, Florida, windows were raised, I took a picture of her and the sailboats, had the flash on; but only the inside environment was visible. The outside was washed out. I tried using exposure compensation, but must have not adjusted it correctly. I will have to experiment with this type of shooting situations to learn how to get a balanced picture. I bought this camera to carry it inside a suit coat without having the bulge that my Canon A610 would have. This is my third on-line purchase with B&H and they are a great company to deal with. Fast delivery. They do not email and/or call to pressure into buying extended warranty, camera case, SD card, etc. Once you place your order, you will get an email confirmation. I will most likely buy from them again.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph Digital Camera (Silver):
This camera was definitely a good investment. Thingsabout it that impress me are the solid servo driving thelens/zoom/autofocus mechanism, the movie function that takeshigh quality movies, steel body case, vibrant LCD andversatile automatic picture mode. It even switches theviewfinder from landscape to portrait if the camera istilted on its side. I had a friend who had the lens closuremechanism on their camera break but this lens closuremechanism looks pretty solid, in the off position, it isslightly inset from the body of the camera. The automaticpicture mode balances brightness, contrast, and colorclarity well. It will work for landscape, candid photos, orportraits. I haven't tried too much action photography butexpect it would work well outdoors with good lighting. Woulddefinitely recommend for touristy landscape photos or takingit to a party to photograph friends.

I bought the sd1000 like 2weeks ago and i love it i took some pics of my brother and this feature it has, where it accents colors is great they look so cool. and i love how u are able to color swap its so much fun to take pictures now. the sd1000 is very under priced , but that is better for me... my previous camera was a sony something and before that a canon sd450 (which was the love of my life ) but the sony was sad a waste of money it was the same price as the sd1000 but with less features if u dont get this get the sd900 which is made of titanium and scratch proof its a little bigger than sd1000 but still cool.

This camera is AMAZING!! I use all kinds of cameras since my job depends on it, but this time I just wanted something to carry around and take everywhere, well first of all it is well built and very stylish, light and small, you turn it on and this thing is a beast!! I have never seen a small camera perform so fast and well!! colors are accurate, focusing is fast even in dark situations, barely any pictures with red eyes, loads of functions, good battery life and VERY underpriced, 7mp, with this system is a bargain, today I was testing the macro mode... it blew me away!!, looking forward to by 2 more as gifts .

Problems Encountered: I wish it had a quick review button, when you take the picture, it stays for a couple of seconds, once gone you have to switch tp view mode in order to see them.

I just came back from a trip to Italy, Turkey and Egypt. I have a camera that I bought at B & H that I really liked: a 7.1Mega Pixel Olympus Camera. A friend on the same trip had the SD1000 and we took pictures of the same scenes, same light, etc. The SD1000 blew my camera away. He got some shots that I can't imagine how he got. He has several in the dark interior of St. Peter's basilica in which he catches beams of light streaming through the windows in the dome above. The dome and the light are visible as well as beautiful colors. There was not enough light for my camera to get an exposure. (both were set on automatic). This is definitely my next camera.
Expertise: Amateur
Problems Encountered: The only down side was that the battery life was not that great. This is probably because the LCD is so bright.
Items I Recommend: extra battery

I purchased this camera for a 17 year old and used it at her graduation. This little camera took amazing pictures and has a quicker shutter speed than most other digital cameras I have seen at this price range. Also, at the time of this purchase B&H Photo had the very best price. I looked everywhere even Ebay.I love the face detection feature, red eye feature and general ease of use. We used it at the graduation without reading the instructions. I am going to buy one for myself. It is also a great size to pick up and go with.I am writing this review as the first review here helped me to decide to purchase this. The 17 year old who now owns the camera is very, very happy and will have many wonderful memories thanks to this purchase.I also rate this camera an A+.

I love this camera...bought it from B&H a few weeks ago and have been extremely pleased!! A few cool features include color accent (which you can pick one color and grey out the rest of the colors in the photo) and color swap (which you can take one color and switch it with another). Great portable size for a point and shoot!! A+!! Very reasonably priced!! Face detection is another great feature of the newer Canon line.
