Just purchased an Epson Perfection V500 scanner, primarily to convert the many boxes and books full of 35mm slides and negatives into digital files.
The "Great Thing" is the wonderful job it does in cleaning and color-correcting. It's not quick, but the results are excellent.
The "Not So Great Thing" would have to be the software installation and documentation. It took me 2 days of installing, uninstalling, and registry cleaning before I found the answer on an obscure user website. If you have previously installed any type of scanner or all-in-one printer/copier/scanner, remove the TWAIN driver for the old unit! (I will refrain from the obvious pun here.) It creates a conflict, and the installation program stalls, over and over and over. Once you get that going, it's a piece of cake.
Oh, and removing the slides from the glass after you are done scanning is easy if you just use a sheet of paper - simply slide it under the plastic slide holder with the slides still in it, then lift the holder away, and pick up the paper with the slides on it. No fingerprints on the glass!

First thing that wasn't right was that an old version of photoshop was included, instead of the newest, as listed on the website. B&H is fixing the problem, but not after lots of time spent on the phone calling B&H, Espon, Adobe, then back to B&H. I now have to send the whole package back for a new one.
For negative scanning (which is most of what I do), it didn't do a good job of exposure or color correcting. Fortunately, I just need it to do the job, and I can use lightroom to fix the rest. Without lightroom it would have been nightmare. But overall, after editing, the pictures have turned out nice. Would have been nice to have some sort of adobe/lightroom touch incorporated into the scanning software. It just didn't seem like the software for the scanner knew how to bring out the best in a photo. :)
It actually scans relatively "fast," considering the size files I need.
The plates that hold the negatives & slides aren't as flimsy as everyone says, but they are a pain to load & unload. Would have been easier if you had something that you could "slide" the negatives into, rather than setting them in, then trying to clip the cover of the plates back together, all while trying to keep the negatives from popping out.
To make it faster, it would have been nice to have two of each of the plates so you can have the next one ready to scan when the other is done.
The software itself is easy if you're in the home mode, but the professional mode, it's difficult to navigate, with very little explaination for anything. I would have prefered using the pro. mode, but such a pain to work in, it went faster to use the home.
Once I get the replacement, I will probably keep the scanner, but I might have chose differently if I know what I know now. I will have to see how it does for some of the other work I need done.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
Need to copy a large collection of 35mm slides and medium format negs. The price is right for the hi-rez quality of the image reproduced. The slowness of the process and the lack of clear cut directions are minuses, but overall a good product.

I have scanned all of my husbands old b&w negatives, had to do some trial and error to get settings right, but work well.
Scanning slides as I don't have a slide projector to look at them, now I can make my own prints from them.
Scanning old negatives, I am excited to work with the photoshop program and see how much I can improve some of the old photos.
Found some old photos from my husbands family and want to make copies for his sister.
Also making copies of old family pics from my moms family.
So far I really don't have any cons to list.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
It's really expensive to use film instead of digital, but this scanner really helps me out. It was only [$] and I am really happy with the results I'm getting. I'm scanning 35mm slides, B&W negatives, and color negatives. If you haven't scanned negatives or slides before, you'll need to do some research on how to do it. If you want high quality scans, you want to use the scanner in "professional mode" so that you can adjust the settings. This scanner is probably an 8/10 or 9/10 as far as getting the maximum quality from a negative, however the price you pay to get a machine with 9.5/10 or 10/10 quality can be much much higher than [$] As long as you take good photos and you scan them well, then you should have no problem making professional images for professional use. The V500 can do a good job.BOTTOM LINE: If you want quality images, do not go for anything lower than the V500 because those machines (less than $100) are only OK if you're posting your pictures on Facebook or just for fun. This machine will give you great results with healthy negatives.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
It's a great system and if you get it at a good price, it'll work wonders. I use if for my 35mm negs and MF transparencies. There are better scanners out there; the v600, v700, and v750 are much better for people who want a better workflow or work primarily with Mac OS 10.7. My scanner didn't come with a compatible copy of Epson Scan for OS 10.7 but I was able to download the software for 10.6 that was compatible with Lion. It's been a good scanner, I've scanned about 200 slides and negatives already.

The software CD wouldn't load & said that it was unsupported ( I have a Mac desktop running the current Snow Leopard) so I went to the website & downloaded the driver from there. So far so good, but it is early yet.

This is probably a high quality product but it does not work with Mac OS X Lion. Only Snow Leopard. Epson could not promise a date that Lion software would be available.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
This is a very good scanner and it was working very well for me in my effort to digitize more than a thousand old slides, negatives and prints.
The scanner and included software do a fantastic job of detecting multiple slides and negatives on the transparency adapter and allows me to quickly reorient the images and select which options I'd like to use for each image (color collection, backlight, etc). Digital ICE has worked very well for me in cleaning up older slides and negatives.
Unfortunately I upgraded my Mac to OS X Lion and discovered that the Epson Scan software is no longer compatible. Epson has not updated this software for quite while and it is still running PowerPC. Apple has dropped support for this platform as of OS X Lion. Epson has not updated it's software to run on Mac Intel based systems and apparently has no plans to.
So, while this is a very good scanner, if you are a Mac user who plans to keep your OS up to date, you should look at a vendor other than Epson.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I'm using the V500 to replace a Microtek Scanmaker 6000. Obviously the V500 is years newer and provide superior technologies and software.
My primary scanning functions are usually to archive prints to a digital format. I scan a lot of color photos for safe keeping.
My findings are that the contrast and brightness needed to be adjusted from defaults. Once I got these fine tuned I feel the V500 produces excellent results.
My rating lacks a star simply because I can't figure out how to spawn the copy software with the copy button. Instead it asks to open Photoshop or the Epson Scan utility.
Overall and excellent easy to use scanner at an excellent price.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
I have had 3 Epson Scanners and none of them last very long. 50 years ago everything was made in the U.S.A. and you could die of old age (80+) before your product quit working. So far this new V500 works ok with my new Apple p.c.I have not had it long enough to rate it except that it looks ok.[*]I bought my first Epson several years ago so I could scan my Hasselblad 500EL camera's medium format negatives and positives, (color slides). Over 10,000 items were scanned. I think the Epson 4490 was made in the USA.My 2nd scanner did not last very long compared to the first one. I DID NOT SCAN ANY PHOTOS, SLIDES, ETC; with it, just paper documents. It just made a big noise one day and quit working, so I took it apart and there was a piece of broken plastic on the bottom of the tray. Why can't the parts be made out of durable METAL, LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS.Today things are made out of cheap material so that they break and the consumer can go buy a new one.I know this is true as I am 80+ years old and some of the things that I bough in the late 1930's and early 1940's still work like new and they are made of DURABLE METAL. I BUILT LOT'S OF HOMES WITH MY FIRST AND ONLY "SKILL" SAW. It will work today just like it did in 1949.Let's keep us consumers's in the "poor-house." Take his/her $$$$ and run.BTW: My Hasselblad 500EL camera works like new and I bought it in 1962 and exposed over 100,000 negatives and/or color positives with the system. However it is not made in the U.S.A and the camera's are still the BEST in the whole world.Rodney in Colorado.

Comments about Epson Perfection V500 Flatbed Photo Scanner:
This scanner hit the perfect point in terms of scan resolution and price. I bought it for 120 film, and the scanner come with two (kinda flimsy) plastic trays for 120 film, 135 film, and slides. This tray was great for the scans. I can easily create 6400dpi scans of my 645 images, they do take a while at that size, but that isn't so much an issue.
What is annoying is a 6x7 negative, you can only scan one at a time. Unless I'm missing something on the limitations of the hardware, the device could scan two if the plastic tray was longer.
That being said, the thing feels robust, and the images come out wonderfully. Hopefully I'll be using this thing for years to come.

I scan hundreds of old slides and this is my third Epson Photo scanner. Other than the job being tedious due to the capability of scanning only 4 slides at a time, the scanner does a great job. The photo repair capabilities of the scanner do a wonderful job.

Great little scanner, Although I missed the right side switch to turn on the scanner. Thought I really had a problem. But then I found it by chance.
The instructions should be a bit more clear on just where the right side "on / off" switch is placed. MHO
