For several years I've been looking for a way to easily, quickly, and without much thought or planning--transfer a large number of VHS tapes that have collected themselves into my closet. I love my computer, but I don't want to tie it up with hundreds of hours of video transferring. I must confess I tried some cheap alternatives (like $99 worth at a nearby [...]) and they really didn't work as advertised. At all. It's easy. You play back your VHS tapes, use RCA or S-Video cables to send the analog video signal into the Sony. Select the appropriate length you want the disc to be, and leave the room. It all happens in real time. I just love the results I get and I can toss most of these tapes into the landfill.I started using it right out of the box. There's a great "cheat sheet" along with the user manual. Overall, it's an intuitive design.I have also done some quick DV video recordings from my camera and those look great too. I do recommend one other component if you plan to digitize A LOT of VHS––get a time base corrector. Like the AV Toolbox - AVT-8710 Multi-Standard Time Base Corrector that I also got from B&H. By the way, the DVDs that come out are playable on all computers, I've even used Toast to make copies on my Mac. I'm sure you can do the same with Windows software. My only criticism of this stand-alone Sony DVD recorder is that the preview screen is not full-frame. Not sure why, but it's not. So you may miss tracking problems at the edge of your VHS playback. My other teeny-tiny quibble is the inability to monitor the audio, say maybe with a mini-phono jack? That would be nice, as some of these old tapes have tracking issues. I have been using this DVD Recorder every day since I got it 5 months ago--it's taken this long for me to write a review because I've been busy--it's a dream of a machine. When I think of the $99 I blew on an inferior product way back when, the price for the Sony is very, very reasonable. Someday when I have more time, I intend to explore the unit's other capabilities, like menu building and creating photo DVDs. For right now, it's a race to get those darn VHS tapes out of my life and storage space.

I bought this in conjunction with a Sony HDR-SR11. So far, so good. But I've got mixed feelings.
It works outstanding with RCA connections. It's super easy: (1) insert DVD, (2) plug in RCA connections to your output device, (3) hit record button, (4) stop when you're done, (5) finalize disc.
Here's where I get frustrated: High Def input. I still haven't figured out how to make the USB connection work right. It won't recognize that there's a signal if I use USB. It looks like I'll need to spend a little more time in both user's manuals to get this capability working right.
Also note that there ain't a whole lot of High Def input connections: HDMI and component are not existent on the MC5. This is probably by design though as High Def recordings require vast disc storage capacity (i.e. Blu Ray).
But overall, what it does do, it does very well. I was hoping for more though. Super compatible DVDs in my player (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RDL, etc all types worked great).
This will work fantastic if you want to transfer home video from Hi8 or mini-DV to DVD.

This recorder does the trick. It doesn't allow for advanced recording capabilities but for the price, it does a great job. I have recommended this already to several friends.

used to make DVD's of home movies on VHS and VHS-C tapes. Regular RCA cables are used to connect the Sony MC5 to your own equipment. No shortcomings whatsoever.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I use the sony DVD recorder to make copies of sporting events right after the event. I can have the game downloaded and a copy made within 30 minutes after the event has ended. It has been great to get a copy that fast with out having to wait on the camera to transfer the game to the computer. The recorder is user friendly and I would highly recommend it for coaches and others that need a fast copy. The only drawback is that you cannot record in high definition, it only copies in standard.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
I purchased this DVDirect Multi Function DVD Recorder by sony to convert old VHS tapes without having to run them through my vhs/dvd vcr and to burn video off my Sony HDD video camera. It pulls the movies off my Sony HDD camera but it formats them in mts2. My computer can play mts2 but my TV's dvd player can not. That means, I have to upload the video through Sony's software program on my laptop, convert to MPEG or WAV and then burn to DVD. I didn't want to have to run everything through my computer for conversion but until I buy a AVCHD blu-ray player, that's exacty what I'll have to do. As far as converting VHS tapes and photos to dvd, it's simple and easy to use. It's worth the $$$.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
Great all-in-one solution for copying video tapes to DVD's. I used to mess around with laptop, video capture devices, software etc. but with this device it is simple. Connect camcorder to it, place video cass in camcorder, blank DVD in the burner, select signal source, and press burn button! It's hands-off from there.Built-in screen is color, small, and bland-looking, but does the job. The "auto-chapter" function seems tricky, haven't gotten it to work yet. With my SONY Digital8 camcorder connected via iLink, it controls the camcorder directly during burn period. Have had it for a month, copied about 12 Digital8 tapes, and haven't run into any surprises or gottcha's[...]

Other recorders only dub the VHS tape so if you used LP or EP on a family video, you get reduced video & audio quality. This one let's you set the quality you want on the DVD and that's what you get.

The best part about this DVD recorder is that when you plug your camcorder in via FireWire it asks if you want to automatically record the entire tape onto DVD. Then it rewinds your camera for you and records and finalizes the DVD for you. No babysitting. Good stuff.

Used this about 10 times to burn a quick copy of NCAA games from a Sony DSR 390 camcorder. When it worked - about 50% of the time - it was terrific. Now two weeks out of warranty (one year) it stopped working altogether and Sony told me to pound sand. Owning Sony pro video equipment, I was disappointed that they chose not stand behind their product. If you feel the urge to buy one of these handsome looking units, move on; you will be glad you did.

Comments about Sony DVDirect MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder:
We run these units, connected to a video camera using composite or SVHS input, in the field to provide a DVD to Sports Teams right after the game. Coaches love the DVDs! They perform very well, we power them using a battery and inverter and they perform flawlessly (they only draw 32 watts). They work very well for football with multiple start/stops (play by plays)and no failures. The key is to use high quality media (Taiyo-Yuden).
