Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 Digital Camera incorporates 8.1-megapixel resolution with a wide-angle 18x optical zoom (28 - 504mm equivalent) LEICA DC lens with MEGA O.I.S., and an Optical Image Stabilizer system that compensates for hand-shake. The camera incorporates a joystick which allows easy manual control of focusing in addition to exposure settings, making the camera more compact and easy to carry while preserving all of the powerful zoom capability and manual controllability of more expensive Digital SLRs.
The DMC-FZ18 Digital Camera also has a large, 2.5-inch LCD which uses a pixel-mixed readout method, improving brightness over typical LCD displays, and allows you to enjoy comfortable shooting even in low-lit situations. The DMC-FZ18 is powered by a high capacity Lithium-ion battery, combined with the efficient power usage of the Venus Engine III processor. Because of this you'll get an impressive 380 shots on a full charge.

I am a professional photographer and photo book writer. I just got the FZ18 and immediately ran out and did a bunch of photography at a local Farmers' Market.
Ran home and enlarged a number of the shots to 13 x19 inches to see what the camera was capable of. Took photos at different focal lengths and several ISO settings- 100,200,400.
Amazing camera and lens. At maximum telephoto its tiny lens produced needle sharp prints that easily match a dSLR quality.
Image quality was slightly softer at 400 ISO and beyond but not as you'd see it in an 8x10 inch print.
The FZ18 is not a substitute for a dSLR especially if you need to shoot fast moving sports or a lot of night or very low light photography.
But for general photography, travel etc... it is a great camera. The price is amazingly low for a camera that does so much. I mean it cost less then a long telephoto zoom for an dSLR.
I absolutely recommended it but you have to read the instruction book and work with the camera to learn how to use it well.

Bought this camera as a birthday gift for my fiancee. I'm a semi-pro and she's a hobbyist. We both looked over stellar reviews on here and other sites and decided that for the price, it can't get much better (when compared to it's "contemporaries")
The camera came in, it looked great, so many awesome features and everything. But when it came to taking the shots, it was horrible in low-light. The manual focus option is a complete joke because you can't make a good manual focus judgement when looking at an Electronic Viewfinder. The "Intelligent ISO" is another joke, making bad decisions most of the time when in low-light. The backlighting setting option is OK, except that it's performance is not consistent.
Other things to note is that the color saturation was poor overall, this was without boosting it in the options. I don't think you should have to play with extra *optional* settings to have colors captured properly. On top of that, the worst part was how horribly grainy the photos were when viewed at 100%. I know not everyone will be printing out 16x20 prints, and I will admit that the 4x6 prints we made came out great, I can't stand to see how grainy and noisy each shot was on the screen. It looked like the shots were taken with an old 1MP camera. Didn't see any bad artifacting, but then again, I was too preoccupied looking at how each photo looked like it was a piece of sand art.
The camera boasts tons of bells and whistles, which look good on paper (or on the screen) but it doesn't perform the way it leads on that it will.
One other thing is that the menu can get slightly confusing, and certain options are not available in all shooting modes. I know this is supposed to make things easier for amateurs, but when you include so many functions to attract people who would need/use them, you should really make them available in more than just a few shooting modes. It really makes it pointless to offer so many pro-level features if you can't use them most of the time.
Battery life was dismal as well. We had it on for about an hour and a half while testing it out and the batter had lost 2 of 3 sticks in that short time.

I always use this camera in every situation: I used before Nikon and Canon but this one is the most satisfying, the quicker, the best, and ... what a price!

Chose this over FZ28 for slightly greater telephoto and larger viewfinder-my use is for high school and collegiate sports outdoors. Great camera for those shooting scenerios. Especially like the wide angle for landscapes. Significant upgrade from FZ20.

I purchased this camera primarily to upgrade my speed and zoom power from a point and shoot, but not go to a DSLR. Overall I like the camera and would buy it again. It's fast and has a powerful zoom. I also like the burst mode to capture action sports shots. All around great camera for family shots.

This camera is amazing. It's so lightweight and takes great pictures. I can put it on the automatic setting and not worry about anything or if I want to play around on it I can set it to one of the manual settings as well. There are so many scene settings it is unbelieveable. I have been taking my son's senior pictures. They have turned out as well as a professional!

This is my first digital camera, I was using a 20+ year old completely manual Minolta 35 MM. So far I've taken 100's of pictures with this one. I've used Intelligent Auto mode and started tinkering with the other modes. So far it's been great. The zoom is amazing. The features are for the most part easy to figure out. The few difficulties I've had were probably more due to my lack of experience with digital. I've used it mainly for outdoor uses. I am very happy with this purchase. My brother in law and coworkers who are almost pros were impressed by it.

This is my second FZ series camera from Panasonic, the first being a FZ-20 several years ago. I take this camera with me everywhere, and use it as a backup to my D-SLR camera.
There is a lot of online bashing regarding Panasonic cameras, particularly due to noise issues. Small-sensor cameras such as this one are simply not going to achieve the same results as DSLRs, so in a way it is comparing apples to oranges. If ISOs are kept to a low setting, surprisingly good results can be achieved.
I carry this camera when I do not want to lug my DSLR gear around or when weight is a concern (i.e. kayaking, biking, etc.) and I am truly pleased with its performance.

I love this litle amazing wonderfull camera. She will do just about every thing you ask of her,the sharpness of pictures is astounding even at extreme telephoto. This is the ideal camara for top flight photografy while traveling. I classify it on par with my Leica V-lux 1. This is not a point & shoot but a quasi professional camera. \

I wanted extra 6 power optical zoom for wildlife photography. Prints came apart at max zoom. I took almost 100 test pictures. Didn't compare to sharpnes of my current camera at max. Had to send it back.
Absolutely great in other ranges! I took one of my best pictures (50 ft) ever w/this camera, while testing it.

I was looking for a light weight point & shoot with a sharp lcd and viewfinder. Also, I needed a camera comfortable in my hands and easy to use. This fit the bill. The great zoom was an added bonus. My son is an advanced photographer & recommended the FZ18 after much research. He was not wrong.

I wanted to upgrade my old 4mp canon elph, but didn't want to jump to a DSLR. The FZ18 is a perfect bridge camera. It has all the advantages of a fully automatic point and shoot coupled with full manual control for the creative types. This, along with RAW, an awesome lens range, and ease of use, make it the best bet for someone looking to make the jump from pure point and shoot to something with a little more flexibility, without the DSLR price. I haven't really anything negative to say about the camera, but I have been shooting in outdoor daylight, so haven't pushed the camera too far yet. Just breaking it in.

I bought this camera for the incredible zoom capabilities and I wasn't disappointed. It's also pretty fast and has a decent burst mode and lots of valuable tools.
I use it for taking pictures of wildlife and it's gotten me some shots I wouldn't have had otherwise.
The only downside I've found is that its auto setting is not good for low light. It was an odd feature so you can tag photos as having a pet or child, then track their ages, but the potential birthdate only goes back to 2000.

The digital and old fashioned view finders are great.
The separate lens cover is not so great.
The flash that you have to remember (or be reminded to "pop up") is not so great.
The fact that you can't change the zoom while videoing is not so great.
