Sony ECM-680S Reviews

A7C XLR-K3M ECM-680S URX-P03D

Rated 5 out of 5

I just added the ECM-680S to my A7C configuration. The ECM-680S on the XLR-K3M Channels 1-2 and the URX-P03D Channels 3-4 with 2 UTX-B40 wireless mics. I can switch between the Shotgun and Wireless Mics during the recording. The Stereo on the ECM-680S works great. I did not need to do any post production on the audio. It's all mounted on a Smallrig cage with a Sony 5 Monitor. The configuration weights 6 lbs 4 Oz with a neck sling.

Great mic!

I primarily use this mic for field recording, and it does quite a good job! It captures a very clear, life-like sound. Highly recommended if you want to do some outdoors recording. Only complaints: it would be nice to have an option to output the unprocessed mid and side components (or a width control), and a battery power option would be great too. Still love it!

Will this work with the Sony PXW-Z200 ?
Asked by: Ayrton
Yes, the Sony ECM-680S M/S Stereo Shotgun Microphone is compatible for use with the Sony PXW-Z200 Camcorder. The microphone comes with an XLR 5-pin to XLR 5-pin cable, but you can get an XLR 5-pin female to dual XLR 3-pin male cable like the Remote Audio 5-Pin Stereo XLR Female to Dual XLR Male Y-Cable - 18" (BH # RECAXSTE), which will allow you to connect the mic to both XLR inputs on the camera with phantom power engaged on both channels to record stereo audio.

What would it be like paired with the Zoom H6 ? I have to Sony ECM-MS2 and it sounds flat no bass almost like a mono sound.
Asked by: Nathan
The Sony ECM-680S M/S Stereo Shotgun Microphone is compatible for use with the Zoom H6 Portable Handy Recorder. For stereo audio on two channels, you would connect the mic to two XLR inputs on the H6 by using the included XLR 5-pin cable and an adapter such as the Sennheiser ACS5 5-pin XLR Female to Dual XLR Male Y Cable for MKH418S and MKE44P Microphones (B&H # SEACS5) or by using a cable like the RODE NT4-DXLR Stereo 5-Pin XLR to Dual 3-Pin XLR Cable for NT-4 Fixed X/Y Condenser Microphone - 10.3' (B&H # RONT4DXLRCBL) or the Remote Audio 5-Pin Stereo XLR Female to Dual XLR Male Y-Cable - 25' (B&H # RECAXSTE25).

anyone with experience with ECM-680S and a current on camera mike like ECM-B1M or ECM-M1? What's the difference in camera noise?
Asked by: William N
The Sony ECM-680S M/S Stereo Shotgun Microphone, when properly mounted in a shock mount, should pick up less handling noise than on-camera mics with a solid mount such as the Sony ECM-B1M.

Can this send separate M and S channels to the sound recorder for decoding later in post?
Asked by: Andrei
This question was asked a long time ago, but I'll add some info. The question mentioned M and S channels. Does that mean Mono and Stereo, or Mid/Side? I'm not sure, so here is an answer to both: Mono/Stereo? You can output only stereo or only mono at one time. If it's in Mono, it works as a shotgun mic for you to focus on your subject from some distance, although less will be better. If it's in Stereo, you get great channel separation--use it for an ambient mic, recording music, etc. Mid/Side decoding? That's not necessary with this mic, the decoding is performed inside the mic and you get just one channel out (the left channel) if it's in mono, or two channels (left/right) for stereo. This is made possible because of the five pins on the base of the mic, rather than the usual three.

question

How would you compare this to the Sennheiser 418s?
Asked by: Jesse R.
Hi Jesse R, The ECM680S is one of Sonys best shotgun microphones. It is switchable between mono and stereo and I don't believe that is something the Sennheiser does. I would also say that at almost half the price of the Sennheiser it is an excellent value. Ralph

question

Length of XLR5 cable, please. And did you buy a supplemental wind screen?
Asked by: Terence
We mounted the mic on our PDW-700 using the front port so we got the smallest cable(about 12 ) and we used the basic windscreen that just slides on with no extra fuzzy muff - we are inside 99% of the time.
