Pentax Optio Z10 Digital Camera
The Pentax Optio Z10 Digital Camera is equipped with a 7x optical zoom lens that is designed with a refraction lens system so the lens never protrudes from the camera while zooming. The 7x optical zoom covers a broad range, from wide-angle to telephoto zoom, and offers an ultra high-magnification of up to approximately 35.7x when combined with the cameras digital zoom. With 8.0 megapixels of image resolution, the Optio Z10 provides high quality images that can be reproduced up to poster size or cropped without any significant loss of image quality.
Other features of the Optio Z10 includes high speed Face Recognition for improved portraits and digital Shake Reduction that uses the cameras ISO 3200 sensitivity to capture sharper images even in low light settings. Furthermore, the sleek, stylish Pentax Optio Z10 body design features a sliding lens cover for extra protection, and a high resolution 2.5 inch LCD monitor that enables images and text to be clearly displayed with a wide viewing angle of 170 degrees from all directions.
- 8.1 Megapixel Resolution
- The 1/2.5-inch CCD of the Optio Z10 digital camera with a resolution of 8.1 megapixels produces high quality fine-detailed photos that can easily be enlarged or cropped without image quality loss, and the camera produces images with more natural, and vivid colors thanks to its 12-bit A/D converter.
- 7x Optical Zoom Lens
- The Optio Z10 features a 7x optical zoom lens that covers focal lengths from 6.3 to 44.1mm (equivalent to 38-266mm for 35mm format) and features a refraction lens system so the lens never protrudes from the camera while zooming. The camera also has a 5.1x Digital zoom for a total combined zoom range of 35.7x
- Digital SR (Shake Reduction) Function
- Using Digital SR reduces camera shakes and blurring of the subject when photographing still images. The sensitivity is adjusted automatically, to as high as ISO 3200, enabling photography with fast shutter speeds, and consequently less blur. Movie SR (Shake Reduction) is also included in the camera providing an electronic shake reduction function exclusively for capturing movies.
- High-speed Face Recognition AF&AE Function
- The Optio E40 is equipped with a "Face Recognition AF & AE" function that automatically detects and focuses on faces, regardless of where the people appear in the photo frame, and can detect the faces of up to 15 people at once. In addition, exposure settings are automatically adjusted to optimize for the faces, even if there is backlighting. Furthermore, this improved High-speed function, has a reduced detection time to approximately 0.03 seconds.

- The Mode pallet allows the user to quickly access 15 shooting modes and 15 playback modes to perfectly optimize the camera to a wide range of shooting conditions, and the Auto Picture mode provides the same ease of use as in any Pentax compact digital camera.
- Auto Picture mode
- The Auto Picture mode automatically determines the best settings for the shooting conditions and then adjusts the camera setting automatically for various shooting conditions.
- Digital Wide Function
- The unique digital wide function converts two images into a single image with an equivalent focal length of approximately 28mm. the resulting wide angle image is great for interior or architectural images or for talking images of landscapes.
- Easily Viewable LCD Display
- The Optio Z10 incorporates a high resolution 2.5 inch LCD monitor that enables images and text to be clearly displayed, and offers a wide viewing angle of 170 degrees from all directions, making it easy to confirm images, even when looking at the screen from an angle.
- Built-in and Expandable Memory
- The Optio Z10 digital camera includes 52MB of built-in memory, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards.
- Edit and Organize Your Images
- The Pentax Optio Z10 includes ACDsee for PENTAX 3.0 image viewer/image management software that supports Windows Vista, and FotoNation's red-eye compensation function for flash shots. In addition, the cameras data imprint function provides for easier image categorizing and searching.
- PictBridge Compatibility
- Simply connect the Optio Z10 to a PictBridge compatible printer with the included USB cable, engage the direct print feature, and print directly - without the need for a computer The direct print feature allows you to select all images or just the images you like best, and even make multiple copies to share with family and friends.

I got camera just before Christmas. Have taken over 200 pictures. I do like the lens cover design makes the camera easy and fast to turn off/on. This may be the only draw back when you put the camera in your pocket you can turn the camera on if you are not careful. Other than that it has been a "Great Little Camera". It's quick, easy to use and takes great pictures. The no moving lens when zooming is another great feature.
Buttons are big enough to use without double buttoning. If the kids had not got my wife another brand I would get her the Z10 for sure.

This replaced an earlier purchase of a Z10 that I managed to destroy in an embarrassing way with the same model. I looked at a few others but no other camera in this size range has the same long zoom while maintaining the slender body. I enjoy the added focal length because I often find myself at a distance from my subject. The 30 bit pictures have a great dynamic range and are noise free below 400ASA with good lighting. While it has no manual mode some adjustments can be made altering the program mode and EV compensation.
The LCD is large and clear but very hard to review your pictures in bright sunlight. Focus can be slow like other point and shoots but if you use the kids mode it will track moving objects fairly well. The battery will last about as long as it takes to fill a 2 GB card most of the time.
Videos are SD and depending on light good but the audio is mono.
It feels pretty solid in your hand but you should use the enclosed lanyard just in case. It will withstand some weather but not a washing machine.

This camera has a 7x optical zoom that allows one to bring in distant shots very easily. I was able to capture shots at Wimbledon very easily. It is easy to use the most common settings - like turning the flash on or off. The fill flash is a bit weak, but if you switch to the program mode, one can make an EV adjustment of 2 stops in either direction to compensate.
Battery life is very good - I like the fact that the re-chargeable battery can be removed from the camera - I bought a spare so that I always have one that is fully charged.
I have been experimenting with the 8 megapixel setting and print shots of up to 5x7 come out perfect. The on-off switch also acts as a lens protector - which is great when carrying the camera in your pocket
