The Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens is an extreme ultra-wide zoom, wide-aperture lens that delivers edge-to-corner sharpness that can surpass that of equivalent fixed focal-length lenses. It features a Nano Crystal coating to reduce the effects of ghost and flare, combined with 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and PGM aspherical lenses that help control chromatic aberrations. These all combine to enhance sharpness and contrast.

The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) feature provides swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. This G-type lens does not feature an aperture ring on the lens body, resulting in a lighter and more compact lens. Aperture changes are designed to be done via the camera's command dial.

Note:
AF-S feature is not supported by certain older camera models. Please click here for a list of compatible models.
"G" type lenses are not fully compatible with the F4, N90-series, N70, N8008-series and N6006 (or older model) cameras, only programmed auto or shutter-priority auto exposure mode can be used.

Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and PGM aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast.
Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet auto focusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range.
Rugged construction and professional-grade dust and moisture resistance.
M/A Focus Mode switch enables quick response to changing situations between Auto and Manual focus operation.

As an amateur member of a photo club and a real photographer for only 5 years, it took a lot of courage to buy this lens before anyone else in the club. There were nay sayers mostly because of the inability to use a protective filter or a polarizer, but the reviews on the web including this website convinced me that taking the plunge was worth the risk. We just came back from a two week tour in Switzerland and Northern Italy and the photos are way beyond my expectations. The landscapes beat anything I had taken previously. If anyone has been up to the Junfraujoch above Grindelwald and wanted to capture as much as possible of the 360 degree view of mountains and glaciers, this is the lens for you the next time you go! I was using it on my D200 and downloading daily to an iMac so I could quickly see the results and make small adjustments for exposure compensation for the following days. Since I returned home, I have made very few changes in Photoshop to prepare photos for competition. This lens was also awesome for shooting group photos. People could not believe that I could photograph a whole table of new friends who are now clamoring for my photos via email. If you love taking street scenes, this is the lens. The color of fruits and veggies are perfect. I never took this lens off my camera. I suddenly lost my interest in telephoto shots. On our next driving trip to the Western United States, I plan to put this lens on my old N80 just for the fun of it. Because the lens cover does slip off easily, I had to rig something to make sure I did not lose it. I bought a package of rubber bands and secured part of the rubber band with the tripod mount and then brought it around over the lens cap to hold it on tightly. It looked hokey but I only used two rubber bands for the whole trip. As far as the weight is concerned, if a 68 year old grandmother can maneuver her way on and off buses, trains and planes and hike for a few hours at a time, walk on solid ice through a mountain tunnel, or walk around a town all day with this lens on a D200, then I think the weight question is silly. If you want spectacular results, deal with it.

I bought this lens but sold it after testing it. First off, judging from the sample I received, and after side by side testing, I discovered it to be NOT AS SHARP AS my 1990's Vintage Nikon 20-35 F2.8 This was the main reason I got rid of it. It simply was not optically sharp enough to justify it's other downsides (see below). I know the hype says this lens is the sharpest of the sharp, but this is NOT what I found by any stretch of the imagination.

Yes, sharpness in the far corners was very respectable, but center sharpness was nothing to write home about.

Second downside, and perhaps the biggest disadvantage is the huge exposed front element. I could not relax for a minute walking around with this lens attached to my camera, nor should you.

Finally the lens is huge. You will not get any Henri Cartier type candids with this out on the street. In fact, you WILL get security wondering "what that pro photographer out there is up to".

I honestly feel the 20-35 and 17-35 Nikons are better lenses for most people - by far!

Another winner from Nikon. Although I have not used it much, this lens is great for interior shots, landscapes, and indoor sports where space is limited. Very sharp, with great contrast and color.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

Ultra wideangles-zoom complements my 28-300 general purpose lens. While the 28/300 is normally resident on my camera, having this relatively fast, wider angle option fills the short focal length gaps.
Due to 14mm, the convex lens protrudes so you can't add a protective filter. The nano coating will need to provide all protection when cleaning dust and spray off the lens.
Produces a very high quality image.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

Moved to Europe for three year assignment, very frustrated with narrow streets and difficulty fitting facades into frame of 24-70 lens (which is a great lens in its own right). Enter 14-24...first shot of church front in Nurnberg says it all--corner to corner sharpness and I was able to take a great shot on a narrow street front without having to stitch a pano together. Really pleased with outcome.

I shoot landscape photography for a living and this lens is a dream. I'm using it on my Canon 5D Mark ii with a Novoflex adapter. It means I have to make all adjustments (focus & aperture) manually but I'm happy to do that for the lens quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

I have a fair collection of tele primes and zooms and have been missing my wide/ultrawide for those shots of architecture and landscapes. For the longest time, I couldn't decide on whether I wanted to get the 16-35 f/4 for its VR or go with this 14-24 f/2.8G for its legendary sharpness. I tested out the 16-35 at B&H and decided the vignetting and ridiculous distortion wasn't going to suit me very well and decided to go for this lens.

When loads of other reviewers on the internet claim that this lens is sharper than anything in that focal length range save for the 24 f/1.4G, you know that something's up. All I can say after having shot with this lens is WOW. This lens is disgustingly sharp: I honestly feel like I could take edges and slice up a steak with it. The f/2.8 aperture also really helps those shots in low-light, and I figured I'd take advantage of it since I shoot with this lens on a tripod most of the time. I have gotten some of the best architecture shots that I've ever taken thanks to this lens. AF and build quality are second to none.

Now about the downsides of this lens. Yes, it is quite heavy...not as heavy as some reviewers make it out to be, but as this was the first lens from the Trinity set for me, its weight was definitely somewhat of a surprise for me when I first mounted it. Also, that frontal element is ALWAYS a cause for concern: other than the fact that it's a royal pain to attach filters to it, I'm always fearing I'll just smack it into something and cause catastrophic damage. This problem is also exacerbated by the fact that this lens is NOT for candids at all. I like shooting candids from range, and this lens is definitely not a go-to for that (but you knew that anyways, so I'm just reiterating it for emphasis). However, it does bring to light the fact that, for anything that's not a massive building or landscape scene, you have to get awfully close to your subject and risk damaging your front element. Yes, even on a crop-sensored body, you still have to be pretty darn close to your subject.

Finally, my biggest gripe with this lens is that it flares a RIDICULOUS amount. To that end, this would've easily been a five-star lens for me had it not been so prone to flaring, which made me a little bit more hesitant to assign the rating. This is probably more of a fault with my shooting technique than anything else, but this lens definitely flares much more than any of my other lenses.

However, all things considered, this is a brilliant lens. I still can't get over how ridiculously sharp this lens is. If you're an architecture/landscape shooter, I really suggest you pick one of these up. It really does offer something new and takes your photography to new heights. Sports shooters, I can't really say much because I don't really do sports, but I've seen some really neat and dramatic angles of sports photography taken photographers using this lens. I am really looking forward to learning the intricacies of this lens as I work more with it in the future.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

Since receiving my lens just one week ago, I have only properly used it once - at my birthday party last weekend (night time, indoors). Paired with a flash, it took the most amazing photos. It was perfect for this kind of situation because the party was held in a tight amount of space - with this lens I could capture the whole scene without having to step so far back.

Without the flash I was taking OKAY images, slightly blurry. But I was happy enough.

The only downside was that the edges showed distortion, making people appear wider than what they actually were... I didn't mind this though because I would rather have slightly distorted images than miss out on capturing unforgettable moments at such a wide angle.

I have wanted an FX lens wider than 24mm for some time. Corner to corner sharpness is important for landscapes. This lens delivers that sharpness, better than some prims, and it is pretty fast at F2.8 across its zoom range. While I use circular polarizer and grad filters frequently, for this lens they are almost a non-issue. Foliage reflectance being the only issue not resolved without a physical filter.

This is one of the finest lenses on the market today. I don't use a wide lens primarily but when the shot calls for it this is the go to lens. I see a few comments on how heavy this lens is but I guess if you're comparing it to a prime then yeah, I could see that. But if your other lenses are anything like the 24-70 or 70-200 then you'll be pleased with the weight. The build quality is what you'd expect from Nikon and optically this thing is beautiful. Like others have commented, the only thing that freaks me out is the large front element. You just have to be careful if you carry your camera on your shoulder.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

I have only had this lens for 2 weeks now and can't really tell you how it will perform for the purpose that I bought it for. I'm a cabinet maker and like to photograph my work after it's installed. Often times there is not enough room to step back and get a clear shot of the work produced. Stitching pictures together has worked sometimes but does not always work well. So I purchased this lens to see if it will do the trick. I have a D-700, which I'm very pleased with. I bought the 14-24mm f2.8G ED just before going on vacation, so I had something to play with while away. And play I did! I just could not get enough of this lens. It's challenging to use. It's almost as if you have to crawl into the subject to get good results. Staying back just by a few inches can result in a lousy shot. Trying to get a picture of a moving subject (like my daughter on a swing set) can be outright dangerous for both the subject as well as the photographer. Of course, taking pictures of people or animals with this lens gives a particular effect that has to be desired. It is by no means a portrait lens! This lens is like having a girlfriend: It's exciting, challenging, provocative, beautiful, funny and heart warming. It's such a eye catcher, it'll make your friends jealous. When used right, the results will be rewarding. But the opposite holds true as well: the outcome can be twisted and warped, boring and disappointing.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens:

Everything is great about this lens. Its wide, its sharp, the autofocus is smooth and fast, its not too heavy and feels good to hold. No you cannot attach or slip in a filter but there are ways around it (LEE Filters has a filter holder that you can get to put a square filter in front of the lens). Nikon put out a fantastic lens in this one. I used to depend on my 10.5mm fisheye for my wide angle shots but now I can decide weather I want that fisheye look or not for certain photos. Really good lens for landscapes and panoramic photographs. Definitely a good purchase.
