The dedicated Nikon HB-45 Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 range of lenses (all versions).
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

I use this lens hood with my Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens on my Nikon D60. It's great for protecting the lens from accidental bumps, and is very easy to mount, even with multiple filters on. It's small and lightweight, making it easy to store in my camera bag. However, it's a little shorter than I imagined, and I'm not sure how much lens flare is actually being eliminated. Also, I think it should come with the lens.

I recently bought a Nikon D5000 with the 18-55 kit lens. Much (or at least somewhat) to my chagrin, getting the lens with the camera means foregoing the lens hood, pouch, and a "real" rear cap. Even buying the Nikon version of these three products saves money over buying the lens separately, but you have to know that the cost of these products to Nikon is nil, so they should have included them with the kit. Sigh...
Anyway, as far as the hood goes, it snaps on instead of twisting on as most Nikon lens hoods do. Once it's on it's fine, but just feels kind of cheap/flimsy when you're putting it on. It also isn't very long. In hindsight I would have cross-shopped other compatible hoods that would offer better protection and light shielding. But it's decent enough that I won't be looking to replace it (mostly because I don't use this lens nearly as often as I thought I would).

It stays on all the time. I love the "Snap-on" design. In addition to shading the lens and preventing flare, it helps keep errant fingers off the glass and protects the filter mount.

I was somewhat prepared for a less than satisfactory product, based on a review I had read. However, I should not have been surprised that this lens hood was up to their usual outstanding standard - superior.

This is the first lens hood I have ever used and I find myself easily clipping it on almost daily. Any time I am out in the sun or at a party with distracting light everywhere this hood helps be get the shot I want.
I also like that I can simply flip this and store it on the lens in a backwards position when I don't need it.
Less in and out of the camera bag is always good :)

Hood is very loose on the lens. It seems to be secure, but I would expect a little less wiggle (and the resulting noise) from a Nikon product. It also feels very flimsy.

Comments about Nikon HB-45 Snap-On Lens Hood for 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (All Versions):
This hood easily snaps on and allows for the use of a lens cap. Lightweight and made of durable materials - this hood feels indestructible. A lens hood keeps light leak from washing out your photos - I take portraits, yoga photos, and family photos outdoors and this hood has saved me hours in post-production editing to darken the images. If you photograph outdoors in bright conditions, where you cannot control the amount of sun-scorch hitting your lens, you definitely need this product! No complaints at all!

Comments about Nikon HB-45 Snap-On Lens Hood for 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (All Versions):
It works. The snap-on characteristic is somewhat annoying, but once you get the hang of it, it really is just fine. I used to get flare with this lens and it has dramatically reduced the orange orb phenomenon. The image quality of this lens still astounds me. I keep trying to consider more expensive alternatives, but it really does function incredibly well as a landscape tool. I use faster lenses for people. This hood helps reduce your landscape flare. It also reverses well for storage, taking up barely any more room than the lens typically would.[...]
