I bought this to accompany my Canon Vixia HF10 camcorder, specifically for an overseas trip. The camcorder came with an adapter/charger which connected to the camera for external powering or charging the batteries on camera, but you can't use the camera and charge simultaneously using the supplied charger.
The batteries used on the HF10 and its successor is usually the 809, which has very limited runtime. For use at a social event or other place where AC is available, the CG-800 allows you to leapfrog the batteries, one running while one charges. It also makes for much lighter traveling and stows easily in a camera bag, since it has no cord. Its plug-in prongs fold simply into the body, and the battery attaches easily.
It also is compatible with overseas power. I simply attached a European style outlet adapter, and it worked perfectly, recognizing the change to 220/50HZ. Some countries catering to US tourists have a few US type outlets in the hotel rooms, but they are at a premium when traveling with a family so it's nice be able to use local power.
There is an amber light indicating the attached battery is charging properly. This light turns green to indicate charging done. This is handy, but some type of level indicating bar would have been useful.
While this takes the place of the corded adapter, it would have been nice to have a terminal allowing it to power a camera via an adapter cable.
I didn't get around to timing the charge cycle, but it was probably well under two hours for an 809 battery. On our foreign trip this was never a problem.
Having not faced a surge, I have no idea whether or not this is surge protected. Perhaps that was not a design consideration because this is not intended for connection to a camera.

Ok, this is usefull so I don't HAVE TO use my camcorder just to recharge batteries...
But it could have a power cord... If you try to put a big battery in this, and then stick it to a wall, you're going to see the whole thing falling to the ground... better use in a floor plug.
And it doesn't show the "charging" light with batteries that are not canon, like pearstone.....

I purchased a third party battery charger at a local Brick and Mortar Store for slightly less money. Charger did not work on my Cannon batteries. I had to returned the charger for a refund. Order this charger, which is made by Cannon, and it works great.

A necessary charger that should be included with the camera. With a bigger battery It might easily fall out of a loose wall plug.

Now have 2 batteries. AC charger for camera is slow and wanted to recharge both batteries at same time. This charger is much faster than AC adapter for in-camera charging. This charger will recharge a 2 hour battery in not much more time than in-camera adapter will charge a 1 hour battery. On vacation, use both batteries during day and recharge both at night.

Wanted an external charger so I can charge the batteries for my Canon Vixia HF S20 outside of the camera. This works as promised. Fast, compact, secure.

I have used it only once. It charged the battery just fine. Sorry it cost so much and that it did not have USB or Auto hookups.

Great Charger. I bought this to charge the battery for my canon video camera because the charger that came with the cameara quit working. This charger is much smaller and easier to carry than the original. Great product.

This charger is specifically designed for 800 series Canon camcorder batteries. It is compact, making it perfect for travel. Also, it charges faster than the included "on the camera charger" with it's cumbersome cords.
I consider this charger a must have for on-the-go videoing.

The Best replacement travel adapter for my Canon HF200 HD camcorder. The original ( 2 piece ) charger had to be connected to the Camcorder with the battery in place from a wall socket
The CG 800 battery charger adapter is wonderful! Just place the battery into the Charger and plug it in :0) LOve It !!!

I use this to charge my batteries for my Canon XA10. It isn't any faster, but it is worth having so I can charge batteries without plugging in the camera. The light is yellow when charging and turns green when it is done. The prongs fold in to make it more compact for less of a footprint in my bag.

Comments about Canon CG-800 Charger Adapter:
The Canon CG-800 is a compact battery charger that plugs directly into the wall I purchased
this unit to have the ability to top-off spare batteries before or during event. It fits easily into even the smallest camera bag or fanny pack, etc. While I haven't formally performed any qualitative, or quantitative tests, my anidotal experience tells me that the CG-800 charging time seems to be much faster then going through the camcorder itself.
Although I have experienced no problems, so far with the CG-800, it's my opinion that the way the electrical plug pivots out of the back seems a little fragile. This is a "consumer product" not"professional", or even "Pro-sumer" grade kit.

Using it with Canon XA10 and BP-827 batteries. Works just as advertised-- bonus is that it plugs directly into the wall (no cord) which IMO really cuts down on clutter. I don't have anything to compare it to for charging times, but seems to charge fast enough.

Comments about Canon CG-800 Charger Adapter:
You can use the camera to recharge your battery, but if you have an actual battery charger, the charging time is quicker and less bulky than a power cord.
