Canon's VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder brings together compact design with the convenience of recording in HD to flash memory. Thanks to its small size, you can take this camera anywhere you go for recording family vacations or just capturing on-the-fly moments during your daily routine. Record in high definition to the 16GB internal flash memory for up to 6 hours in LP mode. Should you need more recording space using removable SDHC cards opens up a whole new world of possibilities, making it quick and easy to upload stunning video and stills to your PC for emailing, printing or sharing on sites such as YouTube.
Canon gave this camcorder a 3.3Mp 1/3.2" Full HD CMOS sensor that captures remarkably clear, rich and accurate images each and every time. And, because it records in HD when you play the footage back on your widescreen HDTV you'll see the amazing picture quality in every scene. The HF-10 also features a 2.7" widescreen multi-angle vivid LCD, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, and a DIGIC DVII image processor for clear, rich video and stills. Canon's own 12x HD Video Zoom Lens has three preset zoom speeds for recording smooth shots and a Super Spectra Coating for reduction of flare and glare.
This camcorder gets even better with 24p recording, allowing you to obtain that film-look and 30p Progressive Mode for recording action and sports footage you plan on posting to the web. The Quick Start mode keeps your camera in sleep mode and brings it up and ready to record in less than a second with the touch of a button. All of these features and then some make the HF-10 an exceptional value.

Purchased this camcorder for "B-Roll" cutaways in awkward filming locations where our Sony F900R might attract attention. We also needed it for behind-the-scenes footage of commercial projects. The 24P 1080 images from the HF-10 are excellent. You must use the highest quality record settings and set the custom menu to low contrast, low saturation, low brightness (gamma) and low sharpening. Set the shutter to 1/48th. We import the HF-10's files into Final Cut which converts them ProResHQ quicktime files. We then use Apple's Compressor to remove the 3-2 pulldown. (The HF-10 only records 1080i, so 24P mode has pulldown added.) You need to buy a couple extra batteries. Low light performance is outstanding. This new Canon CMOS imager is almost immune to vertical line smearing on highlights. Instead it creates a slight star effect at 45 degrees on bright highlights that looks intentional and acceptable. The AVCHD encoding is excellent and superior to HDV at similar data rates. Canon doesn't mention it, but the mini-HDMI connector on the side actually outputs non-compressed 1080i video with embedded audio when the camera is outputting a live video image. The HF-10 does have some negatives... The manual focus method is almost impossible to use on a moving object. The auto focus system seems slow to react to a new scene or a rapidly changing scene. The 12x1 lens is good and sharp, but I'd rather see a wider lens at the expense of the telephoto end. You'll probably want to purchase a wide angle adapter lens. Also, turn the audio attenuator mode on as the camera can be overloaded by loud street sounds. If you record to an SDHC memory card make sure it's at least a Class 4 or higher. These cards can be ejected and played back from the SD slot of Panasonic latest BluRay players. Overall, I've never seen a tiny camera produce a better 1080 image.

Excellent camera, video is great in HD. Menus are a little confusing to navigate. Ergonomics of the camera are overall good, although the mode dial is uncomfortable to reach with a thumb. Small, fits in hand nicely for normal sized hands like me. Black shows fingerprint oils very easily but looks professional and overall better than silver in my opinion. Now for the battery...As many others have mentioned the battery life is weak, maybe 45 minutes per charge if you're lucky. I would go so far as to say, like in my title as to say it stinks or that it is just pathetic. Higher capacity battery is not necessary, it's mandatory and not cheap! It also sticks out of the back of the camera, which can change how you hold it. Now on to the part that irks me most about the overall battery design. There is no external charger! The camera is the charger, which is very inconvenient in my opinion, and it is sold as an accessory which ranges from $70 to $90, ouch! Good luck traveling with thisThis is really not a [$] camera when all is said and done, it's at least $100 more. because all the battery deficiencies they leave out of the package are something you have to have for even the most recreational of uses of this camera. Otherwise it does HD well, feels nice in the hand, and has great optics. Just make sure and understand the battery seems like and afterthought.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
I am a new father and am quite impressed the amount of detail that this camcorder is equipped to handle. The video that I have shot so far will be priceless in the years to come to my family. Shortly after buying the HF-10 I came across the two comparable camcorders that I had researched along with the Canon at a local store. After only a few seconds of using the others I had known that I had made the right decision. Needless to say, the Canon was the far superior of its class.

I run a small video production company centered on the Surf scene.
I purchased this camera in making the conversion from SD to HD and I have been impressed.
Who knew such great quality, full 1080HD footage could come from such a small camera?
Much better than dragging around all of the large "Pro" equipment.
I recommend this camera for anyone wanting "Top of the line" video.

We use our camera to take videos of our new baby. It's great for this.
No problems after a few weeks of use. The only thing that needs to be better is the batter life and lens.
The lens is not nearly wide enough so I plan on buying the wide lens adapter soon.
Controls could be a little better, but I read that the new version of this camera has an updated UI.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
I read numerous reviews about this camcorder and its higher-priced brethren, particularly the HF-11. I opted for the HF-10 (apparently now discontinued) because the difference in flash memory (16 GB) between the two camcorders could easily be resolved by acquiring a moderately priced SDHC card. That cost of the SDHC card represents less than half the price differential between the HF-10 and HF-11.
The HF-10 takes beautiful HD movies. I haven't used it as a still camera because I generally carry a Canon G9 with me for that purpose. The two fit nicely together in a relatively small camera bag. They can also share the same SDHC card. Another reason I didn't buy the HF-11 was because I already owned a 16 GB class 6 SDHC card.
Thus far I've filmed a couple of my son's soccer games. Despite Canon's IS capabilities, a monopod/unipod is suggested for action shots.
Playback on my HDTV was lovely. An HDMI cable would have been nice, but the included component video cable works fine. On a PC in order to take full advantage of the HD format (editing/playback), you'll need a reasonably new CPU. My 5-year-old Intel P4 3.4 GHz processor doesn't cut it. But my 3-year-old Intel-based (Core 2 Duo) Mac Powerbook works like a champ. I first had to upgrade to iLife '09, which works great with the HF-10.
The included software with the HF-10 is for Windows-based systems. The bundled software is ImageMixer 3 SE by Pixela. Check their website for specifications and system requirements. Don't wait 'til after your purchase, like I did.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you'll need somewhere to store all the HD content. Approximately 45 mins. of HD content consumed almost 50GB of space on my laptop's hard drive.
The audio is very clear as well. However, the mic picked up a good bit of noise from the wind. And it wasn't a particularly windy day in D.C.
Overall, this is a very solid piece of equipment.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
Great picture quality in almost all situations. In some cases, you will think it will be not possible to shot, but dont worry, it can. The software is terrible, it doesn't work with my Vista 64. And to put files back in the camera (using it as a player), be patience, because you can't just copy them to the memories; there is some steps to be done. But overall, the camcorder is really amazing. Color and resolution are always correct and the zoom seems to be much better than the number 12x suggests.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
My wife and I were very impressed with the video quality of the camera. It is very light weight compared to our older Sony DV recorder. The biggest complaint is the need for a second battery because of it's short life. I also have concerns that the high gloss black plastic camera body will be prone to getting scratched with normal use.

I use this for recording my kid's sporting events and for family gatherings. Worked great indoors and out. The only time there was an issue with image quality was when I recorded with only one table lamp and the tv for lighting. Items near the lamp were fine, descending to shadows where there were, well, shadows. Recorded some gymnastics competitions and the zoom along with image stabilization are far ahead of my previous, dinosaur camcorder. Even across a large basketball center where the event was held.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
I havent done a TON of filming as of yet but what I have shot thus far is incredible. I use it for action video (namely bike riding) and it seems to work wonderfully. The quality is incredible even when its hooked up to our 46 HDTV.
The second I got it I immediatly picked up on the majority of the functions and it was incredible easy to use. Thats always been something I loved about Canon products.
I only have a few gripes about the camera. The battery life is very short, at least with respect to how much battery life you get compared to how much memory there is. Its just over an hour...two max. Generally just means that it has to be shut off when its not being used.
The other is the file format. There are still not a huge number of products that support the AVCHD format. You have to use the software provided with the camera to upload the footage to your computer...unless you plan to purchase an alternative program. Its not drag and drop like most hard drive cameras. The software that comes with the camera however is simple, quick, and easy to use so its certainly not that big of a deal.
If your in the market for a HD camcorder this is by far the best I could find in this price range with flash memory. I would recommend this to any aspiring home movie maker.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
I use the camera for vacations, when I don't want to lug a big camera around. I never expect the coin-sized lens to be as good as a full size lens on a bigger camera like the Sony HDR-FX1. The manual is not user friendly, but the camera is fairly easy to figure out without it. The included video editing software does not work for Macs, and that is disappointing. The iMovie will accept the AVCHD files, reportedly, but only after I buy a 2008 upgrade. The zoom sometimes "wanders" and slowly zooms in on a subject without touching the zoom button.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
As a budding videographer, I knew I needed a camera with good picture and dependable construction for a fair price. That's where I found the Vixia HF-10, it's overall quality in all aspects is just superb. It's HD capabilities are amazing, the built-in storage is a lifesaver, because twice already I've ran out of the house leaving my SD cards behind ,oops. In low light situations the camera struggles to reduce noise in the picture and does an okay job, but if you can, just add more light where you're shooting. This camera so far has only two achilles heels to it: battery time, and focal point. The battery barely lasts for half of the available record time for the built in storage, 50 minutes in Full HD, but It's easy to just purchase a secondary battery (something to always do anyways). For shooting indoors, and when you want your subjects to be close I would definitely advise to buy a wide angle lens, because with this camera a lot of stuff can feel very cramped on screen. Overall, this camera is fantastic, and I am loving the movies I'm getting out of it!

I have a high end HDV camcorder from a few years ago (paid $3000) and this video looks just as good when shooting typical family shots. The high end one has ND filters and full manual controls, bigger lens but this is simply amazing for the price and I am blown away by the video quality on my 46" plasma. The microphone isn't great but you could put a different one on via the hotshoe. Overall stunned by the quality (I shoot at full HD quality)and mini size.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-10 AVCHD 16GB Dual Flash Memory/SDHC Memory HD Camcorder:
I tested at night when the light was not good, the picture quality was satisfactory. I also tried the writing speed to SDHC for high definition video (highes quality). The SDHC card I bought is capable of handling 150X writing speed. And there is no problem in writing to SDHC card. No frame loss. The only problem I can find now is that when I swith from internal memory to SDHC card when the power is on, it can not recognize the SDHC card. I have to turn it off, and re-insert the SDHC card and then turn on the power.
