Canon's VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder brings together compact design with the convenience of recording in HD to flash memory. Thanks to its small size, you can take this camera anywhere you go for recording family vacations or just capturing on-the-fly moments during your daily routine. Recording in high definition to flash memory cards opens up a whole new world of possibilities, making it quick and easy to upload stunning video and stills to your PC for emailing, printing or sharing on sites such as YouTube. And, in the event that you fill up the recording time on one card, just replace it with another that's small enough to fit your pocket, taking up no room at all.

Canon gave this camcorder a 3.3Mp 1/3.2" Full HD CMOS sensor that captures remarkably clear, rich and accurate images each and every time. And because it records in HD when you play the footage back on your widescreen HDTV you'll see the amazing picture quality in every scene. The HF-100 also features a 2.7" widescreen multi-angle vivid LCD, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, and a DIGIC DVII image processor for clear, rich video and stills. Canon's own 12x HD Video Zoom Lens has three preset zoom speeds for recording smooth shots and a Super Spectra Coating for reduction of flare and glare.

This camcorder gets even better with 24p recording, allowing you to obtain that film-look and 30p Progressive Mode for shooting action and for footage you plan on posting to the web. The Quick Start mode keeps your camera in sleep mode and brings it up and ready to record in less than a second with the touch of a button. All of these features and then some make the HF-100 an exceptional value.

3.3Mp 1/3.2" Full HD CMOS Sensor
Film in 1920 x 1080 high definition with the 1/3.2" 3.3Mp Full HD CMOS Sensor. This sensor provides high color resolution and reproduction for stunning video and still images each and every time. The RGB Primary Color Filter separates light into red, green and blue for rich, natural tones that are true-to-life. This HD CMOS sensor also proves exceptional in light-low situations as well.
DIGIC DVII Image Processor
DIGIC DVII, unlike its predecessor DIGIC DV, is specially designed for HD image capture. Your video and still images will look better than ever in HD thanks to improved color reproduction for skin tones and light and dark situations. This processor also reduces image noise with two types of noise reduction for clean, crisp video and stills. There's more, the DIGIC DVII also provides for faster shooting of still images - up to 5 (3.1Mp) images per second.
Instant AF
The Instant AF on the HF-100 uses an external sensor along with Canon's autofocus system to ensure that you get the clear, accurate images that are crucial when recording in HD.
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
Canon's own SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) corrects for a variety of camera motion, not just hand shake. Fast vibrations, like a moving car, medium-speed motion when hand hold recording, and the slower motion of body sway are all accounted for. Even when shooting at long focal lengths SuperRange OIS comes through with a clean, stable shot.
24p Cinema Mode
By changing the camera's frame capture rate to 24p you can give your video that film-look with the 24p Cinema Mode. The CINE setting will further enhance your video by increasing richness in color and tone. Use both settings together or separately to create your desired look and feel.
Mini HDMI Terminal
The Mini HDMI Terminal allows you to share HD video and audio via one cable for impressive playback quality on your TV.
30p Progressive Mode
Usually only found in the professional camera market 30p Progressive Mode allows you to shoot at 30p as opposed to the standard video frame rate of 60i. Use this function video you plan to post to the Internet or for action shots and see the difference!
Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe
The Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe lets you add video lights, flashes and external microphones to the HF-100 without having to navigate extra cords or batteries.
2.7" Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD
The widescreen LCD display presents accurate, clear images each and every time, especially helpful when you are composing or sharing video with friends or family on playback. A wider range of viewing angles also helps. The hard coat AR surface and improved color reproduction helps ensure that what you capture is truer to the actual scene.
12x HD Video Zoom Lens
The HD Video Lens with 12x optical zoom demonstrates the quality Canon's lenses are known for. Capture every moment with three pre-set zoom speeds for smooth, accurate close-up and zoom shots. The Super spectra coating protects your images from the flare and glare that plagues video and stills, especially when shooting outdoors. Clean, accurate video and higher resolution are thanks to the new aspheric lens design that decreases aberration and increases resolution while the new gradation ND system corrects the image when recording in bright situations.
PictBridge
Share and print your still images with the touch of the button using a PictBridge compatible printer via the included USB cable.
Quick Start
Never miss the moment again because you're waiting for your camcorder to start up. Pressing the Quick Start button once keeps your camera in sleep mode. When you're ready to start recording just hit the button again and you can start recording in under a second.
Microphone Input Jack
Virtually extinct in the consumer camcorder market the microphone input makes a comeback for recording audio with an external mic for superb clarity.
Wireless Remote
Use the wireless remote to control the camcorder when you you're using a tripod or just want to be in the picture too.

The HF100 is a good camcorder. It takes better photos than I expected, as Canon's camcorders generally take anywhere from terrible to almost acceptable photos, and the video quality is nice and sharp. The image stabilizer is wonderful, low light performance is all right, battery life is okay, and compression efficiency and quality is very good. Let's get more specific.

I'll just go in order of where I started and add anything else I can think of along the way. You don't want to use this camera for still photos. In fact, you'd be better off printing a frame of your video in many cases. Nonetheless, the photos are usable in most situations and the flash doesn't ruin them like it used to. It can make them less-desirable and I have yet to find an easy way to disable it (though there does appear to be one that isn't working for me--yet). One weird thing is that switching to photo mode doesn't let you take a picture right away. I have to press the video record button, let the camera tell me I'm not in video mode anymore, and then I can press the photo button with success. This may not be the case on all cameras and since I rarely take photos these days if not with my DSLR, I don't really care. But it's a nuisance and just bizarre. Lastly, it's sort of annoying to have to switch modes to record/play back videos and photos. There are four modes. There should be two. There are two separate buttons for photos and videos. If I have to switch modes, the video button should work as a photo button as well. It's just weird that they separated the buttons AND the modes. Two separate buttons is how I prefer it, without every having to switch modes unless I want to move between play and record.

I'm extremely critical about video quality, and my first impression wasn't all that positive when I saw the video that came out of the HF100. After I shot in decent light, shot a series of different subjects and lowered my expectations a tiny bit I felt differently. (I'm used to shooting on a Sony PMW-EX1, so expecting that kind of performance out of a consumer HD camcorder was very unrealistic.) The video quality is quite nice. Comparing it to my previous, smaller handheld (Sanyo HD1000), it's slightly sharper but lacking the nice contrast the HD1000 provides. That's fine because it provides a lot more data to work with in post, but at first I felt like the video didn't look that good because it seemed kind of...flat, I guess. Nonetheless, the video quality is quite good--especially after you've spent some time working with it.

Shooting modes are plentiful but not as good as they seem. The HF100 shoots in 30FP and 24FP modes, which is basically fake 30p and 24p. The footage it records is still interlaced, but once you de-interlace it looks pretty close to 30p and 24p footage. But it's not, and you can sometimes tell, and that's unfortunate. But I'm guessing 1080p didn't make it into this camera because it couldn't handle the heat of the sensors in such a small body with very little room for ventilation. The only 1080p camercorder offered at this physical size is a Panasonic, and it's not actually 1080p. It uses standard definition sensors and up-converts the image. If you're looking for the closest thing to 1080p in a small camcorder that you can get at the moment, this is what I'd go with (and did). Sony has a few nice options, too, but I like the images produced by Canon's consumer sensors over Sony's and Canon's cameras use SD cards rather than MemoryStick, which ties you to buying Sony Products or throwing away your flash memory when you switch.

You can fit a lot of video on an SD card these days, even in high definition. The Sanyo HD1000 I used to own fit even more, but the Canon HF100 fits an even two hours on a 16GB card. Even if you don't want to pay for a 16GB and go with an 8GB card, you can still fit an hour. I don't think the battery will even let you shoot for two hours :). Storage that large is more for if you're not going to be able to import between charges.

Speaking of charging the camera, it does so fairly quickly. I think it only takes a couple of hours after the first one. It's never been a problem, though I wouldn't mind if the battery lasted a bit longer. What is a bigger inconvenience, however, is transferring the footage from the camera. The camera MUST be plugged in to the power adapter when transferring or it will refuse to do so. This is very aggravating because it means more cords and that you have to take your power adapter everywhere you want to transfer footage. If you're a laptop user you will not like this. I wouldn't like this as a desktop user either but that may just be me. Anyway, the trick is to get a card reader and use that instead. If you have a laptop with an ExpressCard slot this is especially easy. Either way, just make sure you get a card reader with support for SDHC cards over 8GB.

Moving on.

Coming from the HD1000, which is about as stable as Michael Jackson, the HF100 is wonderful. It's about the best stabilizer you can expect from a handheld camera, and is amazing considering how small it is. No complaints, only praise. It makes your shaky shots look fluid.

And the instant auto focus they promise is, almost all of the time, instant. It's pretty nice.

Low light performance is okay. It's about what you should expect from a consumer-grade camcorder. It's not bad by any means, but isn't perfect. It's done a great job in the majority of the locations I've had it. Unless people complain about the light being too low for their own eyes, the HF100 should do a pretty good job. I'd like it to be incredible and jaw dropping, but it's a consumer HD camcorder. It does very well for that.

Battery life is sufficient, but it could be better. I'd like to be able to shoot for over two hours, maybe three. One and a half (give or take) isn't as much as I'd like, but it hasn't caused problems. Still, I'd like to see battery life--but who wouldn't?

The video compression is hardly noticeable, and if you want to notice it you have to move the camera quite a bit. I'm making all my comments about the highest quality mode, by the way. It's efficient enough to give you about 7.5 minutes of full-quality video per GB of storage. I think that's fair.

As for the sound, it's not bad. I might even say it's good for a built-in mic. I think these mics are getting much better than they used to be, because I remember when they were painful to listen to. Now they're loud, you can hear what you need to hear (in most situations), and the noise you get along with the audio you do want isn't that bad. In fact, I would probably call the sound this camcorder records good.

Lastly, the controls are a bit weird at times but Canon's been known for weird controls. I already mentioned the odd controls for switching modes. Menus are kind of split up in a strange way and the quick change controls, through the little joystick controller on the LCD, isn't as quick and easy as it was most likely supposed to be. If you're shooting in automatic this is all pretty much moot, but if you like to change things now and then you might find the controls a little frustrating. I've been through all kinds of HD cameras over the past couple of years and I think Sanyo does this the best with the HD1000. It uses a system that worked quite well in previous models, but made it more solid in the HD1000. Nonetheless, nothing is perfect. I certainly would not discount the HF100 because of the weird controls. For the most part, they're good. There are just a couple of choices that seem completely bizarre and inexplicable.

Overall, it's a very good camera. It's not the camera I want, but it'll do until they figure out how to do what I want in a mini cam :). Ideally, I'd like something like the HD1000 but with a stabilizer and autofocus system as perfect as the HF100's. The sharper image quality wouldn't hurt, either. I'd like it to do true 24p, or at least 30p, at 1920x1080. In fact, if I could have 720/24p in the HD1000 (currently it does 30p and 60p, which is great) with the Canon autofocus and image stabilization I'd be very, very happy. But for now, the HF100 is a very good option for me and probably a much better option for people who aren't as horribly picky :).

Really great camcorder - definitelly the best in this range in the market! The camera itself desurves 5 stars. In addition to already mentioned excelent picture quality, lots of advanced functions and easy and intuitive to operate, I'll add Power safe mode, which lets you having the camera ready in less then a second!
Nice to add - HDMI cable in te box.
Problem 1 - poor battery life! Canon neededs to ofer it with the more powerful battery pack 819. In addition, they needed to make power addapter also battery charger. This will let charging two batteries at a time and also to charge battery while the camcorder is in use.
Problem 2 - terrible (!) editing software, coming with this camera. No help, no support!! It's not Canon, it's Pixela's product, but is supplied with the camera and I blame anyway Canon for the poor quality. It seems the only thing which is important for Pixela is to register the soft. Nothing else!

Just received item yesterday and was up all night playing around with settings and options. Nice item to have on the spot is the internal 32GB of memory! Easy settings from resolution to area location. Have not connected the HDMI yet since I had only three hours til work time. Overall item seems to be user friendly. Would highly recommend this camcorder. Make sure you buy the UV filter for this cam to get the most out of your cam.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

It's the right camera if you keep your expectations in check and know how to shoot. All cameras are a collection of compromises, but this one and the newer models (which, to my perception, are pretty much the same at the core) are all marvelous design masterpieces. I use it with the Canon wide adapter lens on all the time. There are a number of ways you can configure the camera with microphones and other gear, and get everything in a small bag. With a little research you can put together an excellent run and gun documentary kit. The workflow in Final Cut is easy. The onboard mics are bad, but it's ability to capture strong audio with external mics is quite good, and there are several mics you can find to work the way you need to. I am really glad to have gotten this camera. I've been an editor mostly for a long time now but I've gotten back into shooting as a result of this purchase, 'cause it's so friendly and fun. My results when converted to ProRes and brought into FCP just wow me.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

I use this camera mostly for client projects (product demos, church events, concerts, musicians, etc.) that result in demo DVDs for marketing purposes or video for the web. First, the camera is a nice small size that you can take anywhere, but easy to operate with one hand. The zoom works well and the picture quality is excellent. If you are moving from shooting on tape, you will find the flash-based memory to be a time saver. I got the B&H kit option that included a 32 gig flash memory card and case. It was a great buy since I get plenty of video on the card (up to nine hours, set at high quality). The camera also has a standby function that allows you to close the viewfinder and when you're ready to capture something on the fly, just open it up and the camera is ready to record in about a second. The flash on the camera works okay and the microphone is okay for home recording. If you are trying to go for more pro sound, add the DM-100 microphone. It makes a BIG difference and the sound is excellent for the price. I don't use the 3MB feature for still shots since I carry a Canon Digital Rebel for shooting pictures.

I have an iMac and just connect the USB cord and iMovie or Final Cut Express can do the rest. Just pick the scenes you want to transfer and you're ready for editing. I never loaded the software that came with the camcorder. This is a great camera and would not hesitate to buy another.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

I am happy that I bought a flash memory based camcorder to replace my mini tape camcorder. I think the HF-100 is a great bargain, a good combination of features and price. The picture is a big improvement over my past Sony. Using a memory card is a HUGE improvement over my past routine; putting the card in a card reader instead of hooking up the camcorder to the computer is a great benefit.

Canon makes great products and I have no doubt I will get a long life from this product.

I agree with one con mentioned by others: the built-in microphone is not great. I will consider an external mic.

One extra I did purchase, and recommend, is a travel battery charger. It folds up into a small unit that plugs directly into the wall outlet, and the battery then plugs into it. Again, leave the camcorder in a convenient place while the battery charges separately.

Pros: Compact, lightweight, no hard disc (no internal moving parts, other than lens), easy to operate, up to the minute battery indicator, HD video.

Cons: Compact(maybe too small for the hand), no viewfinder, expensive replacement battery, software(the included software does not play the video without skipping frames, even on a fast computer; but the recorded video plays fine with the Western Digital HD Media Player, indicating bad software).

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

This camera has all the deficiencies of cameras in its class. Everything is automatic, and even the things that can technically be controlled manually (focus, audio levels, exposure) are awkward to manipulate in practice. But if you're looking for a camcorder that can almost fit in your pocket and takes gorgeous video, then this is an excellent choice. Even the on-camera mic (again, not to be confused with lav mics or boom mics or anything like that) is outstanding for an on-camera mic.I use the camera mostly for b-roll (and family stuff). Couldn't be happier with it.I chose this one over over the otherwise identical HF-10[...]because I really prefer the convenience of SD cards.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

First used to record son's karate tournament. Unfortunately, missed his events because I didn't realize the camera was recording and actually turned recording off when it should have been on. Camera is more difficult to use than I thought it would be. So I'm learning but it does provide great quality video. Drawback is it's not intuitive.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

I bought this camera for filming family outings and other personal events. The camera is easy to learn, very intuitive, fits well in my hand and well designed. It records very good quality video but I have yet to experiment with the full HD capabilities. The included battery is pretty poor so definitely upgrade to the longer lasting one. I use Adobe Premiere Elements to edit the footage and so far so good, though you do need a very strong computer. A negative would be that the microphone often picks up the noises you don't want, like the breathing of the cameraman.

All in all, it's a great camera for a good price.

This is an amazing camcorder. The video is outstanding. In all honesty, I would not have thought it was possible to have such a great camcorder for less than [$].I haven't seen any issues with the sound as some have reported. The battery life is a little short (around 1.5 hours). The only drawback is the compression/file storage is by Canon propietary. Thus, none of my older video editing software supports this file type. But, Canon manages to compress 1.5 hours into 8GB of space.

This is my first video camera, and I bought it to film a wedding. The results were very good. The ceremony was outside in bright light, and the reception was indoors. In both situations, the video was very clear, and the sound was good. I don't think the image stabilization is very effective but I was usually using a mono-pod so it didn't make much difference. I'm not so happy about the software provided as I wanted to make a dvd of the result, and ended up using other conversion tools to get it.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

I've used this camera a few times now and every time I watch I'm amazed at the quality and it's easy to use with iMovie 09. My friend used it once and was wanting to purchase one. I highly recommend this camcorder. My one complaint is the battery life, it has about two hours and then it's done. I'd recommend picking up an extended life or spare battery if you're going to be doing a lot recording.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

We bought this camcorder for the impending birth of our baby boy and could not be more thrilled with the product. It is very easy to use and simple to set up. You have to buy a memory card at first, but you would do that anyway. The size is great - about the size of a coke can. The software takes a bit of getting used to, but if you just work with it you can make very nice videos with your recordings. As some people mentioned, the battery life is not that good, but they sell an extra large battery - so it is not a big deal. All in all, a highly recommended camcorder.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF-100 AVCHD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder:

The picture quality on this camera is great. The HD is clear and detailed. Outdoors or in bright lighting the unit works best, as expected. In bright light I would rate it a 5. The reason I gave it a 4 is because with typical indoor lighting I feel unit increases contrast, and brightens colors a little too much. I haven't found a setting to correct that on the device. The enhanced contrast combined with the HD can actually make people look worse in close-ups. It does pick up in very dim light though, although things get grainy at that point, but that's expected. The audio quality I felt was particularly good, ultra clear and zero noticeable background static! The unit is small and lightweight, but doesn't have any pivoting handle. Palming the unit is uncomfortable for me, so i use the small lanyard and hold it with my fingertips. The unit is small enough for me to do that comfortably and change my hand position while taping. The image stabilization also does a great job, especially when zooming in.

Small size and quick menu choices. Has port for external mic which is important in some situations. Most don't have this. Great.

I like that it is simple and easy to use and it works with Mac computers, my only cons about it are short battery life, and because its so small it is sometimes hard to get a stable video. Other than that, great camera!
