I bought a pair of BX5a a couple years ago for use with video editing and to run with the M-Audio Audiophile 192 card in my computer. They are also great for listening to Internet music, iTunes, etc. A couple weeks ago one of them would not turn on (no LED power-on light). Called M-Audio - got instructions for sending it in for service - two weeks later it's back, costing just[$].Now you might think that raving about repair service is an odd form of review - but hey - stuff breaks (it was the voltage regulator) - and factory repair service that's quick and affordable should be just as much a part of your purchase decision as all the other factors.By the way - M-Audio is now part of Avid, so they have good backing.

A reasonably good product for not too much money. I was looking for something that would be a step up from plastic computer speakers, and these will do. Not too big, not too heavy, not too expensive. Good enough, but nothing you'll fall in love with. As others have noted, the highs are a bit directional. I find the bass to be a little flabby --- surprisingly! Still, they are plenty good enough for my needs, and I would recommend them. I'd even buy them again for a similar purpose.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe 70W 5" Studio Reference Monitors (Pair):
These are quite precise, so they do what they are supposed to do. The lack of decent bass means these are not as ideal for a regular computer user, using them for music and games. For the studio, however they make sense--and to be fair this is really what they are for. It's just that some places market them to the general user. Mine also happened to stop working soon after setting up, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that this is unusual.

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe 70W 5" Studio Reference Monitors (Pair):
First, these sound so excellent. I was considering these, or the MKII from alesis. I went with these because (from what I could find) they seem to be more reliable.
I use them to mix music on adobe's audition, Presonus' Studio One, Propellerhead's Reason, and Cakewalk's Sonar - thru a Tascam US2000.
They are pretty flat (EQ curve), and they are very responsive at all frequencies... even the bass lows.
I have to say, though the woofers are 5", you can hear everything important in the lows.
I say 'hear', because the bass is clear and present for you to know what is going on in a mix - for making decisions...
Notice that I didn't say 'feel' because they don't thump your chest. Thumping isn't the point. Hyped sub frequencies are for consumer speakers systems, not studio monitors. These are not consumer speakers. That's not to say however, that I can't feel the pop of drums hitting or bass guitar pumping. Present. Not overbearing. Flat.
This is all fine for my music (I do cool rock/pop/alternative), but around 110HZ the volume starts to dip and keeps getting quieter as you go lower (for 5 inch woofers, I am still impressed). I suppose that if you do R&B or Rap or whatever, you might cry without your sub. Maybe you could use a sub with them..... but you can't scoop the lows to make room for the sub... unlike some monitors. If you are needing more deep lows you might look at the bx8's.
The highs are clean, crisp, and clear too.
No slight EQ room adjustments. :| I guess I don't need them, but some of you may. My 14x14 room has a giant paper mache model railroad mountain behind me, several bookshelves, several open doors, lots of other large and small protruding objects, so there's no frequency cancellation or bouncing fraction-of-a-second delayed echo to mess things up as everything gets diffused and absorbed. My room is great. You really should NOT mix in a room that's 4 strait walls anyway. Before this room was usable, I diagonally used a super-cluttered 2 car garage. Messy Garages are sonicly far underrated. Yes, your family's food storage shelves and camping gear can diffuse wave cancellation.
Since I've had these my mixes are better, I can hear subtle things that I missed before. Like, I can better hear the different character kick drums can have now. I am now bothered by mp3 digital compression (VBR MP3's give a sort of static and hiss at the highs). I recorded a quick bit of Guitar last night; at playback, open notes vibrated individual strings on my hung-up guitar. :)
The detail is superb, that's not to say that you shouldn't test your mix on low quality speakers to see how it sounds for the average joe. Do this, because you can hear everything well on these m-audio's, even when you mix is not done yet. Your mix is done, when it can sound good over a staticy old radio. Monitors only exist to get you there. ;)
These can go plenty loud enough. When I have artists in the room, or ppl standing over my shoulder, they can hear almost as well as I can in the sweet spot. They can go too loud for my room too. They can go plenty loud enough for my parents' living room (20x20 with 12 ft ceilings joined to other big rooms). That said, You should not be mixing at loud levels anyway! (at high volume, your ear's have a built compressor of sorts that will alter your perception of a mix)
Well, I can recommend these for home studios. If you do get them, make sure that you have a ledge about a foot above your desk, so these can throw sound into midair without a flat surface to close, or a side wall to close. You should also keep them at least a foot forward from the back wall. I modified a midsized computer desk to hold up a long wide shelf for my dual screens and monitors (this puts them about 4 ft center to center)…. You need to be in an equilateral triangle with your BX5's.... so I sit about 4 feet from my screens.
Plan the height so that your ears are near the same elevation as the tweeters (not the woofers). For me, that's not a slouch or sit-up height, but somewhere between. Do this and your head will float in the beautiful sweet spot. :)

Purchased these monitors as speaker system to use with Imac computer to listen to itunes music collection. Sound quality and tone is much better than any computer system speakers available. Slightly larger footprint than most systems however sound quality is worth the size. Each speaker requires power. Very pleased with the purchase which was considerably less expensive through B&H compared to other sources.

Exceeded expectations for studio monitor use. I have never purchased an M-Audio product until now. I am not disappointed. I normally use JBL for all of my work. These studio monitors live up to their reputation. Highly recommend for small studio use. The highs are crisp, clear, and detailed. The mids which normally suffer in most speakers are noticeable. The bass is present but for those looking for more punch I would recommend the companion M-Audio sub-woofer.

I use these to edit audio for video. They are super clear and will definitely give me the resolution needed for mission critical work. There's no digital optical connection on it but that wasn't a deal breaker for me.

I'm impressed with the clean flat sound across the sonic spectrum.
I use them to mix audio for corporate video and local cable spots.
Some have pointed out the lack of bottom end typical of speakers this size but given the type of work I do, they well represent what sound will be represented in typical corporate environments. Others worship at the alter of Genelec and I too am and audiophile geek but I'm impressed at how precise these speakers sound for a much lower price.
If your torn over catering to your good ears but need to keep within a realistic business budget, these speakers will ably represent professional work.

I bought these when my Alesis M1Active MKII came down with a flashing blue light symptom. A common disorder according to my search on the net. The BX5a are smaller in size and have a lot more higher end then i was used to and that's a good thing... I edit documentary style videos and always felt i was missing that. As for the quality these are a solid build with a good clean sound but I wouldn't recommend these if you're mixing big bottom sounds. Go for the bigger BX8a. Note to M-Audio.... please do not put stickers on your products. Thanks.

I got these as computer monitors for music and gaming. Absolutely perfect, functionally and cosmetically. They have plenty of punch and bass for everything I ran through them. About the only complaint is that I have to turn them off, individually, when I'm through using the PC, which is no big deal.

I'm using these monitors for desktop video editing and am LOVING them. Initially I was concerned about having to purchase a separate sub-woofer, but these babies can rumble! Some of the high end frequencies get lost but generally I'd say these monitors are worth every penny. Be sure to position them properly with he tweeters at ear level. A good few feet from a wall makes a difference too. Each monitor requires separate power so be sure to turn them off when you power your system down.

I am a bluegrass musician with a very basic home recording setup. I've had these monitors a couple of weeks and have now spent ten or twelve hours with them. I am delighted with the clarity and sound quality and can already see how they are improving my mixes. Quality items at a great price. B&H's price was the best!

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX5a Deluxe 70W 5" Studio Reference Monitors (Pair):
I purchased these monitors and upon unboxing them noticed that the trim on the first monitor of the pair was peeling already. At first I thought it might be in just one spot and that I might just be being overly critical but as I looked more closely I noticed that the trim was peeling in several places. I lugged them back to the store and got another store. The second pair was fine and the sound is very good. The other reason that I gave them four stars is that they do have a weak bottom end which is somewhat forgivable from a five inch speaker. What is less forgivable is that the bottom end that is there can be muddy at times. Generally I am really happy with the speakers and they work well for my primary purpose which is voice-over work. I think they are a good value for the price but not a five star speaker. If you buy them I think you will be happy, just don't expect the sound of 10,000 dollar monitors.
