The Wein Sync-Link Universal IR Flash Trigger can be used to trigger any flash unit that features a built-in optical slave. The Sync-Link simply slips into the hot shoe of a camera. An infrared signal is sent from the trigger to the infrared slave built-into the strobe unit to fire the flash.
The Sync-Link is ideal for use in studio settings since it uses IR, which requires line-of-sight with the flash. it can be used to increase the range of the built-in slave sensor of the flash.

Comments about Wein Sync-Link Universal IR Flash Trigger - Hot Shoe:
I bought this to replace my WEIN SSR which had gotten damaged in a fall. I was not impressed when I first started using it. It seemed to be much slower than my old one. I soon found out that while it is slightly slower than my older model, this is the higher power model with greater range. The only drawback is a slight delay to recharge. It's not big enough to cause any problems in the studio, but may cause problems for some.
My advice - Unless you are working in a HUGE studio space, you can go with the lower power unit and have faster recycle times. I always use a wein ultra slave in at least one of my flash units, and the older, lower power model worked fine for 8 years until I dropped and stepped on it by accident.

Comments about Wein Sync-Link Universal IR Flash Trigger - Hot Shoe:
I shoot a digital Canon camera and I needed to be able to trigger optical White Lightning Monolights, but I couldn't use the Canon E-TTL flash units to do it because the E-TTL pre-flash discharged the WL before the actual exposure. The Wein IR Trigger trips the WL's from the Camera hot shoe without adding "light" to the subject and without wires!!

Comments about Wein Sync-Link Universal IR Flash Trigger - Hot Shoe:
As someone who has just made the transition in studio work to digital, the flash trigger is a perfect solution for my purposes, working with Novatron lighting equipment. I had heard horror stories of toasting digital cameras (mine are Canon) by using the original sync cord I had used with previous single lens reflex film cameras and the Wein system is a real life saver.
