The ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter is a unique flash adapter that will convert your hot shoe flash unit into a ring light flash. It is designed for use with Nikon's SB-800/600 Speedlights when they're mounted to a Nikon D1, D2, D3 series or D700 DSLR. It simply slips over the front of the flash unit, and will fit any lens with a front diameter of no more than 4". It will replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens. Because the Ring Flash Adapter relies on the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables. And in addition, TTL operation works exactly the same as with the flash itself.

The Ring Flash Adapter is ideally suited for fashion, wedding, portrait, journalist and macro photography as either a main or fill-in light.

The Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter results in minimal light loss from the flash's standard output. It does not change a flash's color temperature.
Requires no modifications to your flash unit to mount.
The Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter ships with a Wedge Adapter required for mounting to SB-600 Speedlights.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for SB-800/600 to D1/D2/D3 Series/D700:

Overall this works remarkably well. When close to the subject and the backdrop, it casts a shadow to one side. Apparently the top part of the ring is a bit hotter than the rest. But when not too close, it provides a nice even light.

I especially like it for fill flash outdoors. I don't find it as cumbersome as I feared.

A bracket from the bottom of the ring to the camera's tripod mount will eliminate the stress on the flash hot shoe and the camera shoe mount and the ring will be more stable.

Great ring light for macro and portrait photography. I would have given it a five star but the fit to my flash (SB600) is not great. It really needs some work on the fitting.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for SB-800/600 to D1/D2/D3 Series/D700:

This is a genius idea. It does what you think it will do and extends your existing flash capabilities. It is just a molded piece of hard plastic with some internal reflectors, but I have yet to experience any structural failure. It fits snugly and doesn't bend. I would advise that you use this with a solidly mounted flash. Some heavily used flash heads may feel sloppy under the weight of the Ray Flash, and you will need to hold it in place with your extra fingers while shooting. I mark this item down because it doesn't collapse well enough to fit in smaller camera bags, and it is fairly expensive.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for SB-800/600 to D1/D2/D3 Series/D700:

I bought the Ray Flash on short notice for an event, and it worked great. The quality of light is really nice, and I was able to shoot with it for hours, which is why I went with this over something like the Orbis.

It worked great for the event, and I'm looking forward to trying it as a fill with other lights.

On the downside it's bulky, my Lowepro Compudaypak won't zip up completely with it inside. And it flops around a bit on the camera. They give you some little rubber wedges to help with this, but they get lost quickly. I didn't think it moved enough to cause problems.

Overall I think it's great, too bad you have to buy another one for different cameras/flashes. Although this one will also work on the D700, and with an SB-80DX, but not the SB-28.

Outrageous price for a piece of plastic that feels extremely cheap... maybe $10-15.

Never felt so bad about equipment purchase in my life. It really puts a lot of stress on shoe-mount and flash head joints.
Cuts your flash power in half.

This product is not worth consideration . After receiving the ring flash,I first noted that it come without any kind of storage case. This is a big bulky pice of plastic and well not fit into your camera case. This product well brake your cameras hot shoe mount right off your camera. It well also break your flash shoe. This thing is very heavy and puts a lot of stress on the flash mount .. It attaches to the flash head via a funky locking switch. After observing all of this before testing the product I was not a happy camper. O.K. I'll try it out. Your exposers in program mode well be 2 to 3 F/stops under exposed. Even in manual mode using a flash meter "RED EYE" is really Bad.
I returned this pice of junk to B&H three days after receiving it.
Thank you B&H for taking this thing back...

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for SB-800/600 to D1/D2/D3 Series/D700:

The lighting is really nice for taking portraits. I think it's great to get the ring affect without paying six times as much money. I definitely wish it had some kind of cover to slide it into for storage or for travel. I don't want it to get scratched up during transportation or during a shoot & carrying the box around is not going to happen. Great for fixed lenses & some zoom lenses, but once you get past 85mm, the lens is blocking the light. Not a major drawback but something to consider. Overall, I think it's a great addition to anyones' arsenal.
