The Olympus 9-18mm f/4-5.6 ED Zuiko Zoom Lens is an ultra compact and lightweight lens that offers a super wide angle zoom range. Optimized for use with Olympus digital SLR cameras, as well as with any other brands that use the Four Thirds system, this lens offers an equivalent focal length of 18-36mm in 35mm terms.
Special optical glass elements, such as DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) glass, are used to correct various types of aberrations. The 100% digital design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 9.8" throughout the entire zoom range.
By incorporating the image-stabilization mechanism into the camera itself (e.g. E-3, E-510, E-520, etc.), this lens enables super-wide-angle handheld shooting without using a tripod even at night.

The purpose I bought this lense is the $100 discount from Olympus and the purpose for building and travel photography.
I have done lots of research from internet (such as slrgear and others) for its quality and comparing with other olympus wide angle lens (11-22mm and 7-14mm). this 9-18mm with newer technology produce the image quality no less than the other two not to mention about its compact size for easier carrying.
If you want to pay a little more for higher quality (maybe), you can choose 11-22mm lense but I do believe that many Olympus users have owned the "all purpose" lense such as 14-42mm, 14-54mm, or 12-60mm lens with more overlapping range. You don't want to pay extra for too much overlapping zoom range. What you want may be the extreme wide end of 9mm or 7mm lense. For me, the 9mm is already wide enough to include most of the view in my images. I don't want to pay triple (more than triple) for the additional 2mm and higher quality (may be until you enlarge to 24x36 inches to see the difference).
I didn't see to much problem of the red abbre. in the images as people critized on internet. I may be mercy to this lense but it can be corrected pp anyway if you want.
the major con is that the hood doesn't tightly stay on the lense both on shooting or storaging positions. You may need to buy the hood anytime if you lose it.
For my personal experience after 2 weeks of playing around, the image quality is close to my 50mm F2.0 one similar to other comment. I would put it to Olympus's high quality cat. rather than standard cat. The plastic like looking may be the reason to be assigned to standard cat.

Another great optic by Olympus for not so much money! This lens performs better than what one would expect for the amount of money spent. Though I paid only about 15% less than list price of [$] it is a bargain for such fine optics. I use this lens for primarily landscape shots and the depth of field is fantastic. Without stopping down to f22 you can get everything from foreground to background sharp. I have found almost no vignetting with great edge sharpness. About the only thing I would have liked would have been a bit faster lens but then again, price dictates what a manufacturer will offer at any price point. Would I recommend this lens? With 5 stars!!!!

I am developing my interest in photography and the addition of a super wide lens to my bag has been a great one. It provides depth not provided in a regular lense of this size.

I wanted a lens to take wide shots of seascapes in my area. This is just what I wanted. It is light and fits in my kit. The pictures are crisp, but are better with a filter because of the water element in the photos I take. Without the water the lens is great.

Compact but mighty wide-angle lens. Performing really well with my E-410 and creating amazing wide-angle shots for both landscape and interior photos. This lens are mandatory for any photographer with ambition to increase dramatic appeal of the outdoor shots or enhance the spatial impression for an interior photo. Compact size and a good price (at B&H) complete a solid package. This is probably the best lens out of Olympus' standard quality line-up.

Comments about Zoom Super Wide Angle 9-18mm f/4-5.6 ED Zuiko Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital SLR:
I bought this super wide angle for my Olympus 510 dslr on the first day of my visit in New York. It turned out to be a beloved companion in my efforts to catch the skyscrapers, bridges, and views on camera. The quality is good and the price is low, so this is a very fine bargain for Olympus dslr-ovners.

This wide angle 9-18mm Zuiko lens works really well attached to my Olympus E30 and E5. Impressed with the fast and accurate focus. Avisable to always use a uv protector filter as dirt easily lodges at the circumference of the front edge of lens.
Well worth the purchase for the price! Easy to mount, very lightweight. Produces sharp images at f8 consistantly. I purchased this 9-18mm lens to compliment my 12-60mm swd lens when an extra wide angle shot was required .

This 18mm equiv. lens gives a wider view than my 28mm equiv. lens, and is helpful in getting in one shot that otherwise would take several stitched together.
Stopping down to f/8 is still necessary to get extreme depth of field from foreground to background.

This wa zoom lens equivalent to a 18-36 35mm lens is really sharp, while remaining lightweight . Price to pay is the aperture (4-5.6) but this allows the zoom to remain so lightweight and suited to travel photography. Use it with a camera that features IS (E-520, E-620, E-3 or E-5)

The 9-18 for a standard grade lens is very sharp with little distortion. The lens is light and I was quite surprised at the sharpness. The 7-14 is a beauty but for the difference in price I'm happy with the 9-18.

Comments about Zoom Super Wide Angle 9-18mm f/4-5.6 ED Zuiko Zoom Lens for Olympus Digital SLR:
Great wide angle at a great price.
It gives me the wide angle I want sometimes between my fisheye and my 14mm - 50mm zoom. Very light weight.
The focus can be slow in low light and the housing is on the low end. So if you can afford to spend a few hundred more, I would get the higher grade lens. But for someone on a budget this lens is Great!
