I've used a few other less-expensive programs before, but this is my first serious photo editing program. I've had this program about one month, and am still learning how to use all of it's features. The interface seems easy enough, as I was able to do many basic procedures before I ever looked at the manual.
If you are considering this program, my only advice is to be sure you have a sufficiently powerful enough computer. I currently use a Dell Optiplex with a Pentium 4 and only 1GB of RAM, and if I have ANYTHING else (IM, IE, etc) open along with this program, all programs run painfully slow. I would recommend at least 2GB of RAM and a dual-core CPU.

I did have an install issue. Tech support line was NOT open 24/7 as advertised at Nikonusa.com, tech support people had no other option than reinstall the software, and basically were rude.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
I used a lot of the trial software before purchasing CNX2, such as Adobe Photoshop CS4, CS5, CS6 Beta, and found CNX2 easier to use and understand for adjusting image attributes. I'm not advanced enough to evaluate the specific differences. Along the way I learned you should use the manufacturers software to best render their own unique RAW format, so I went with CNX2 for my Nikon D7000 shooting in Nikons RAW NEF format.

I use NX2 as my first step after transfering images to my computer. Use for lens corrections and love the color control point. Then to PS5.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
I got Capture NX2 in all the photos that I edit. I bought it about the same time that Lightroom 4 was released. I initially had second thoughts on getting Capture NX2 as I have used Lightroom 3 i the past and was thinking maybe LR 4 was the natural next step. I was pleasantly surprised that I decided to get Capture NX2.
The quality with which it handles Nikon NEF files is unparalleled. Nothing is lost and all the details are preserved in a very pristine manner. A side to side comparison (with LR) confirmed this. I love the convenience that the control points give me. At the same time, it saves me hours on the computer editing my photos because correcting issues is just a breeze. The workflow is just right. It gives me just everything that I NEED. I don't all the other fancy gimmicks on the features. I just need something straight forward -- and that is Capture NX2.
I haven't experienced a crash or anything. They say that it's slow but I think it's just alright. One thing I noticed though, the CD I got was of an older version so I had to go and download an updated version before I got to open NEF files from my D3100. After that, everything was just cruising.

After using Capture NX2 for approximately a month now. I find that I like it better than any of the PS CS versions. I believe it is more powerful than PS. I wished I had purchased Capture much sooner.

Used to post process Nikon Raw impages from my Nikon D90
- Superior Raw processing engine for Nikon Raw images than the PS/PSE/LR engine
- U-Point technology makes post processing very strait forward and intuitive compared to the use of layers in PS/PSE/LR. In two months of using Capture NX2 I could do significantly more sophisticated post processing than I had been able to do after using PSE8 for two years.
- Shortcomings that require me to continue to use PSE8 include:
--- No ability to review/organize photos across all folders. Works fine within a folder but unless you put all of your photos into a single folder that is not sufficient. Star rankings are transferred to PSE so there is no duplication when you get to PSE
--- No ability to place a satisfactory Copyright notice in a location appropriate to the photo.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
This software is outdated, and when you try it sends a message (pop-up) stating it is no longer compatible with your OS. After contacting Nikon customer service ( it really isn't ), they told me that I would have to down load an update from their web site in order to be able to use it (and this is just out of the box), and that there would be no refund.
Nikon should leave the software business to people who know how .

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
I use Capture NX2 to process and convert my Nikon raw images from a D90 and 70-300mm Nikon/Nikor lens.
1) For Nikon users the quality produced by the raw processing engine is far superior to that used by Photoshop.
2) In two months of using the free demo version of Capture NX2, the raw processing plus the UPoint technology allowed me to produce pictures far superior to those that I was able to produce in two years with Photoshop Explorer 8. I don't take anything away from photoshop but NX2's UPoint technology is just more in tune with the way my brain works than the layered approach of photoshop. So to me NX2 is much more intuitive.
3) The free on-line manual is very helpful.
4)So far, the only things that I still need PSE8 for is to put my copyright/signature on my photos and to organize photos across all of my directories and folders.
5) It is a little slow on my computer because I only have 2MB of Ram on a Core 2 Duo.

I attended a Nikon School and saw how useful this was for editing photos. Also, since this is a Nikon product, it has access to full EXIF information on the pictures.
I've had a couple of hang ups with the software. Running XP Pro on a monster laptop (Dell m6500 - dual quad core).

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
Be warned that Capture NX2 is not compatible with Apple's latest Lion operating system. You will not be able to do a new install of this on a Mac with Lion OS. When I tried to install, I got a message that said that PowerPC is no longer supported. End of story. For more information google, "Capture NX2 and Apple Lion OS". This reflects poorly on both Nikon and Apple. BTW, B&H will not give refunds on opened software. So I learned a hard lesson to not assume that Apple will make their new systems backward compatible or that Nikon will keep up to date with the latest operating systems. The actual software is probably pretty good once installed, but I did not get to that stage.

Although I use Photoshop and ACR for most processing, I ordered CNX2 so that I can process my IR images.
Software package can be used for Canon or Nikon raw images. Software seems immediately easy to use, yet I believe that after studying instructional materials, the program can become a very powerful tool.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
If you use a Nikon camera and Photoshop, you are faced with the dilemma of whether to invest in Capture NX 2 or Lightroom. I recently upgraded to Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5, but had previously used Capture NX and earlier versions of Photoshop. I debated whether to switch to Lightroom as part of the upgrade, but decided to stay with Capture NX 2.
There were two things that carried a lot of weight in the decision. First, I read a review on a website comparing Capture NX 2 and Lightroom. The author noted that Nik Software and Nikon partnered on the development of Capture NX 2. As a result, Capture NX 2 did a better job than Lightroom converting RAW files generated from a Nikon camera into JPEGs. The review had some images that demonstrated the point. The images were different enough that it convinced me. Secondly, Nik Software makes some great stuff. I also own Nik's Complete Collection and its U-point functionality saves a tremendous amount of time in creating masks within Photoshop. That same U-point technology is in Capture NX 2 and it makes touch-ups on lighting, saturation or other attributes very easy.
Now that I have been working with Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5 for a while, I realize that the big drawback of Capture NX 2 is the lack of integration with the Adobe suite. I cannot cleanly open a RAW file using Capture NX 2 from within Photoshop and/or Adobe Bridge. As a result, I will sometimes resort to opening both Capture NX 2 and CS 5 which uses through a lot of memory and slows down the work flow. I modified my work flow so that I create the JPEGs prior to launching Photoshop and then make adjustments within Photoshop. As a result, I alternate between View NX and Adobe Bridge to navigate my images and directories. It is a reasonable work around.
My recommendation is if you shoot using a Nikon camera in RAW format and care about image quality, then definitely get Capture NX 2 and don't worry about the limited integration with Photoshop. Other camera users will like the U-point functionality within Capture NX 2, but if you use Photoshop extensively as part of your workflow, you might want to consider Lightroom.
