Pentax PH-RBG Overview

The Pentax PH-RBG Lens Hood for SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 Lens(58mm thread) is the dedicated lens hood for the Pentax SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 lens. Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The lens hood fit perfectly, as I would have expected. The aftermarket model I had previously fit very poorly, and didn't shade anywhere near as well. I hope it lasts a long time. This piece of plastic is expensive.

This hood fits perfectly for this lens, it has the ability to be reversed for a camera case, but gives a large shaded area over the lens end, and good protection for the outer glass. A little pricey for plastic, but it goes on the lens around the bayonet mount and allows you to still add filters, or effects to the threaded end of the lens. As this lens is a zoom/telephoto lens, you probably won't want to have the lens hood reversed, as you would for storage, as it covers 75% of the zoom ring. Chances are, if you don't want to use the hood, but still take photos, you will want to remove the hood completely, or just use the hood. This hood is by-far better for this lens than using a threaded filter type hood, or a lens cap type hood.

Hello, I'm looking for a 58mm hood for my Pentax DA 55-300 lens but would very much like to not have to pay this kind of money for a hood. I noticed that there are a number of 58mm Velio hoods that are supposed to be dedicated to various Canon lenses, so I'd like to know if one of those or any other brand would fit my lens. The Velio hoods look similar to the Pentax but I don't know if they will work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jim

Unfortunately, the Vello lens hoods would be optimized to fit particular Canon lenses and may not fit on a Pentax lens. As an alternative, please see B&H# KAMLH58, http://bhpho.to/1dQTXAS.
